Coupled Cluster Channels in the Homogeneous Electron Gas
We discuss diagrammatic modifications to the coupled cluster doubles (CCD)
equations, wherein different groups of terms out of rings, ladders,
crossed-rings and mosaics can be removed to form approximations to the coupled
cluster method, of interest due to their similarity with various types of
random phase approximations. The finite uniform electron gas is benchmarked for
14- and 54-electron systems at the complete basis set limit over a wide density
range and performance of different flavours of CCD are determined. These
results confirm that rings generally overcorrelate and ladders generally
undercorrelate; mosaics-only CCD yields a result surprisingly close to CCD. We
use a recently developed numerical analysis [J. J. Shepherd and A. Gr\"uneis,
Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 226401 (2013)] to study the behaviours of these methods
in the thermodynamic limit. We determine that the mosaics, on forming the
Brueckner Hamltonian, open a gap in the effective one-particle eigenvalues at
the Fermi energy. Numerical evidence is presented which shows that methods
based on this renormalisation have convergent energies in the thermodynamic
limit including mosaic-only CCD, which is just a renormalised MP2. All other
methods including only a single channel, namely ladder-only CCD, ring-only CCD
and crossed-ring-only CCD, appear to yield divergent energies; incorporation of

Asbestos, Smoking and Lung Cancer : An Update
This review updates the scientific literature concerning asbestos and lung cancer, emphasizing cumulative exposure and synergism between asbestos exposure and tobacco smoke, and proposes an evidence-based and equitable approach to compensation for asbestos-related lung cancer cases. This update is based on several earlier reviews written by the second and third authors on asbestos and lung cancer since 1995. We reevaluated the peer-reviewed epidemiologic studies. In addition, selected in vivo and in vitro animal studies and molecular and cellular studies in humans were included. We conclude that the mechanism of lung cancer causation induced by the interdependent coaction of asbestos fibers and tobacco smoke at a biological level is a multistage stochastic process with both agents acting conjointly at all times. The new knowledge gained through this review provides the evidence for synergism between asbestos exposure and tobacco smoke in lung cancer causation at a biological level. The evaluated statistical data conform best to a multiplicative model for the interaction effects of asbestos and smoking on the lung cancer risk, with no requirement for asbestosis. Any asbestos exposure, even in a heavy smoker, contributes to causation. Based on this information, we propose criteria for the attribution of lung cancer to asbestos in smokers and non-smokers.Peer reviewe
Density Functional Theory of Inhomogeneous Liquids: II. A Fundamental Measure Approach
Previously, it has been shown that the direct correlation function for a
Lennard-Jones fluid could be modeled by a sum of that for hard-spheres, a
mean-field tail and a simple linear correction in the core region constructed
so as to reproduce the (known) bulk equation of state of the fluid(Lutsko, JCP
127, 054701 (2007)). Here, this model is combined with ideas from Fundamental
Measure Theory to construct a density functional theory for the free energy.
The theory is shown to accurately describe a range of inhomogeneous conditions
including the liquid-vapor interface, the fluid in contact with a hard wall and
a fluid confined in a slit pore. The theory gives quantitatively accurate
predictions for the surface tension, including its dependence on the potential
cutoff. It also obeys two important exact conditions: that relating the direct
correlation function to the functional derivative of the free energy with
respect to density, and the wall theorem.Comment: to appear in J. Chem. Phy
The Langley Annular Transonic Tunnel
Report describes the development of the Langley annular transonic tunnel, a facility in which test Mach numbers from 0.6 to slightly over 1.0 are achieved by rotating the test model in an annular passage between two concentric cylinders. Data obtained for two-dimensional airfoil models in the Langley annular transonic tunnel at subsonic and sonic speeds are shown to be in reasonable agreement with experimental data from other sources and with theory when comparisons are made for nonlifting conditions or for equal normal-force coefficients rather than for equal angles of attack. The trends of pressure distributions obtained from measurements in the Langley annular transonic tunnel are consistent with distributions calculated for Prandtl-Meyer flow
