Entangled states of trapped ions allow measuring the magnetic field gradient of a single atomic spin
Using trapped ions in an entangled state we propose detecting a magnetic
dipole of a single atom at distance of a few m. This requires a
measurement of the magnetic field gradient at a level of about 10
Tesla/m. We discuss applications e.g. in determining a wide variation of
ionic magnetic moments, for investigating the magnetic substructure of ions
with a level structure not accessible for optical cooling and detection, and for
studying exotic or rare ions, and molecular ions. The scheme may also be used
for measureing spin imbalances of neutral atoms or atomic ensembles trapped by
optical dipole forces. As the proposed method relies on techniques well
established in ion trap quantum information processing it is within reach of
current technology.Comment: 4 pages, 2 fi
Gas-phase diagnostics by laser-induced gratings II. Experiments
In this article we review the results achieved in the past ten years at the Paul Scherrer Institute on the topic of diagnostics in the gas phase by laser-induced gratings (LIGs). The technique has been applied for thermometry in air and in flames at different pressures, for flow velocimetry, for concentration measurements, and for imaging purposes. The influence of collisional energy-transfer and relaxation processes in molecules on the temporal evolution of the LIG signals has also been investigated. It has been demonstrated that, for molecules with a low fluorescence quantum yield, excitation of laser-induced thermal gratings can be used as a sensitive spectroscopic tool. For the quantitative interpretation of the experiments shown in this work, the findings presented in the companion paper [1] have been use
Gas phase diagnostics by laser-induced gratings I. theory
Electrostriction and collisional thermalization of absorbed laser energy are the two dominant mechanisms leading to the formation of laser-induced gratings (LIGs) in the gas phase. In this article the results of the theoretical investigations that have been achieved in the past ten years at the Paul Scherrer Institute on this issue are summarized and yield a comprehensive understanding of the underlying physical concepts. Furthermore, a study of the influence of various parameters, such as the alignment and the spatial intensity profile of the beams on the generated electrostrictive and thermal signal is presented for the first time to the authors' knowledge. The variations of the refractive index responsible for the appearance of laser-induced gratings have been theoretically described by solving the linearized hydrodynamic equations. The contributions from electrostriction, as well as from instantaneous and slow relaxation of the absorbed radiation energy into heat is obtained. These expressions are employed for analysis of experimental data presented in the companion paper [1] which is devoted to the application of the technique for diagnostic purposes in the gas phase. Much effort has been undertaken in order to allow a straightforward physical interpretation of the experimental findings of the expressions presented her
Precision spectroscopy by photon-recoil signal amplification
Precision spectroscopy of atomic and molecular ions offers a window to new
physics, but is typically limited to species with a cycling transition for
laser cooling and detection. Quantum logic spectroscopy has overcome this
limitation for species with long-lived excited states. Here, we extend quantum
logic spectroscopy to fast, dipole-allowed transitions and apply it to perform
an absolute frequency measurement. We detect the absorption of photons by the
spectroscopically investigated ion through the photon recoil imparted on a
co-trapped ion of a different species, on which we can perform efficient
quantum logic detection techniques. This amplifies the recoil signal from a few
absorbed photons to thousands of fluorescence photons. We resolve the line
center of a dipole-allowed transition in 40Ca+ to 1/300 of its observed
linewidth, rendering this measurement one of the most accurate of a broad
transition. The simplicity and versatility of this approach enables
spectroscopy of many previously inaccessible species.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, updated supplementary information,

Realization of a single Josephson junction for Bose-Einstein condensates
We report on the realization of a double-well potential for Rubidium-87
Bose-Einstein condensates. The experimental setup allows the investigation of
two different dynamical phenomena known for this system - Josephson
oscillations and self-trapping. We give a detailed discussion of the
experimental setup and the methods used for calibrating the relevant
parameters. We compare our experimental findings with the predictions of an
extended two-mode model and find quantitative agreement

Effect of nitrous oxide on cisatracurium infusion demands: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract

Background

Recent studies have questioned our previous understanding on the effect of nitrous oxide on muscle relaxants, since nitrous oxide has been shown to potentiate the action of bolus doses of mivacurium, rocuronium and vecuronium. This study was aimed to investigate the possible effect of nitrous oxide on the infusion requirements of cisatracurium.

Methods

70 ASA physical status I-III patients aged 18-75 years were enrolled in this randomized trial. The patients were undergoing elective surgery requiring general anesthesia with a duration of at least 90 minutes. Patients were randomized to receive propofol and remifentanil by target controlled infusion in combination with either a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide (Nitrous oxide/TIVA group) or oxygen in air (Air/TIVA group). A 0.1 mg/kg initial bolus of cisatracurium was administered before tracheal intubation, followed by a closed-loop computer controlled infusion of cisatracurium to produce and maintain a 90% neuromuscular block. Cumulative dose requirements of cisatracurium during the 90-min study period after bolus administration were measured and the asymptotic steady state rate of infusion to produce a constant 90% block was determined by applying nonlinear curve fitting to the data on the cumulative dose requirement during the study period.

Results

Controller performance, i.e. the ability of the controller to maintain neuromuscular block constant at the setpoint and patient characteristics were similar in both groups. The administration of nitrous oxide did not affect cisatracurium infusion requirements. The mean steady-state rates of infusion were 0.072 +/- 0.018 and 0.066 +/- 0.017 mg * kg-1 * h-1 in Air/TIVA and Nitrous oxide/TIVA groups, respectively.

Conclusions

Nitrous oxide does not affect the infusion requirements of cisatracurium.

Trial registration

ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01152905; European Clinical Trials Database at
.</p
A Single Laser System for Ground-State Cooling of 25-Mg+
We present a single solid-state laser system to cool, coherently manipulate
and detect Mg ions. Coherent manipulation is accomplished by
coupling two hyperfine ground state levels using a pair of far-detuned Raman
laser beams. Resonant light for Doppler cooling and detection is derived from
the same laser source by means of an electro-optic modulator, generating a
sideband which is resonant with the atomic transition. We demonstrate
ground-state cooling of one of the vibrational modes of the ion in the trap
using resolved-sideband cooling. The cooling performance is studied and
discussed by observing the temporal evolution of Raman-stimulated sideband
transitions. The setup is a major simplification over existing state-of-the-art
systems, typically involving up to three separate laser sources
