Pressure-induced Spin-Peierls to Incommensurate Charge-Density-Wave Transition in the Ground State of TiOCl
The ground state of the spin-Peierls system TiOCl was probed using
synchrotron x-ray diffraction on a single-crystal sample at T = 6 K. We tracked
the evolution of the structural superlattice peaks associated with the
dimerized ground state as a function of pressure. The dimerization along the b
axis is rapidly suppressed in the vicinity of a first-order structural phase
transition at Pc = 13.1(1) GPa. The high-pressure phase is characterized by an
incommensurate charge density wave perpendicular to the original spin chain
direction. These results show that the electronic ground state undergoes a
fundamental change in symmetry, indicating a significant change in the

High-flux beam source for cold, slow atoms or molecules
We demonstrate and characterize a high-flux beam source for cold, slow atoms
or molecules. The desired species is vaporized using laser ablation, then
cooled by thermalization in a cryogenic cell of buffer gas. The beam is formed
by particles exiting a hole in the buffer gas cell. We characterize the
properties of the beam (flux, forward velocity, temperature) for both an atom
(Na) and a molecule (PbO) under varying buffer gas density, and discuss
conditions for optimizing these beam parameters. Our source compares favorably
to existing techniques of beam formation, for a variety of applications.Comment: 5 Pages, 4 figure
Dynamic Scaling in the Susceptibility of the Spin-1\2 Kagome Lattice Antiferromagnet Herbertsmithite
The spin-1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet herbertsmithite,
ZnCu(OH)Cl, is a candidate material for a quantum spin liquid
ground state. We show that the magnetic response of this material displays an
unusual scaling relation in both the bulk ac susceptibility and the low energy
dynamic susceptibility as measured by inelastic neutron scattering. The

universal function of or . This scaling is discussed in
relation to similar behavior seen in systems influenced by disorder or by the

Numerical study of the thermodynamics of clinoatacamite
We study the thermodynamic properties of the clinoatacamite compound,
Cu_2(OH)_3Cl, by considering several approximate models. They include the
Heisenberg model on (i) the uniform pyrochlore lattice, (ii) a very anisotropic
pyrochlore lattice, and (iii) a kagome lattice weakly coupled to spins that sit
on a triangular lattice. We utilize the exact diagonalization of small clusters
with periodic boundary conditions and implement a numerical linked-cluster
expansion approach for quantum lattice models with reduced symmetries, which
allows us to solve model (iii) in the thermodynamic limit. We find a very good
agreement between the experimental uniform susceptibility and the numerical
results for models (ii) and (iii), which suggests a weak ferromagnetic coupling
between the kagome and triangular layers in clinoatacamite. We also study
thermodynamic properties in a geometrical transition between a planar
pyrochlore lattice and the kagome lattice.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Solid-phase C60 in the peculiar binary XX Oph?
We present infrared spectra of the binary XX Oph obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The data show some evidence for the presence of solid C60– the first detection of C60 in the solid phase – together with the well-known ‘unidentified infrared’ emission features. We suggest that, in the case of XX Oph, the C60 is located close to the hot component, and that in general it is preferentially excited by stars having effective temperatures in the range 15 000–30 000 K. C60 may be common in circumstellar environments, but unnoticed in the absence of a suitable exciting source
Air Traffic Management Technology Demonstration - 3 (ATD-3): Operational Concept for the Integration of ATD-3 Capabilities Version 1.0
ATD-3 has developed four capabilities to address its goal and objectives. The four ATD-3 capabilities include: Dynamic Weather Routes (DWR), Multi-Flight Common Routes (MFCR), Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests (TASAR), and Dynamic Routes for Arrivals in Weather (DRAW). This document describes the long-term, mature vision for the use and incorporation of the ATD-3 capabilities into the National Airspace System (NAS). This vision describes their complementary interaction and the benefit capture that accrues from use. Recognizing that all capabilities are unlikely to be implemented in unison, each of the capabilities is designed and able to be implemented independently. As discrete portions of the integrated capabilities are planned, additional integration efforts should be undertaken to validate the complementary interactions and benefit pool are realized from the selected subset
