A Study of Heating and Cooling of the ISM in NGC 1097 with Herschel-PACS and Spitzer-IRS
NGC 1097 is a nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy with a bright circumnuclear starburst ring, a strong large-scale bar, and an active nucleus. We present a detailed study of the spatial variation of the far-infrared (FIR) [C II]158 μm and [O I]63 μm lines and mid-infrared H_2 emission lines as tracers of gas cooling, and of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) bands as tracers of the photoelectric heating, using Herschel-PACS and Spitzer-IRS infrared spectral maps. We focus on the nucleus and the ring, and two star-forming regions (Enuc N and Enuc S). We estimated a photoelectric gas heating efficiency ([C II]158 μm+[O I]63 μm)/PAH in the ring about 50% lower than in Enuc N and S. The average 11.3/7.7 μm PAH ratio is also lower in the ring, which may suggest a larger fraction of ionized PAHs, but no clear correlation with [C II]158 μm/PAH(5.5-14 μm) is found. PAHs in the ring are responsible for a factor of two more [C II]158 μm and [O I]63 μm emission per unit mass than PAHs in the Enuc S. spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling indicates that at most 25% of the FIR power in the ring and Enuc S can come from high-intensity photodissociation regions (PDRs), in which case G_0 ~ 10^(2.3) and n_H ~ 10^(3.5) cm^(–3) in the ring. For these values of G_0 and n_H, PDR models cannot reproduce the observed H2 emission. Much of the H2 emission in the starburst ring could come from warm regions in the diffuse interstellar medium that are heated by turbulent dissipation or shocks
Hubble Space Telescope images of submillimeter sources: large, irregular galaxies at high redshift
We present new Hubble Space Telescope STIS, high-resolution optical imaging
of a sample of 13 submillimeter (submm) luminous galaxies, for which the
optical emission has been pinpointed either through radio-1.4 GHz or millimeter
interferometry. We find a predominance of irregular and complex morphologies in
the sample, suggesting that mergers are likely common for submm galaxies. The
component separation in these objects are on average a factor two larger than
local galaxies with similarly high bolometric luminosities. The sizes and star
formation rates of the submm galaxies are consistent with the maximal star
formation rate densities of 20 Msun kpc^{-2} in local starburst galaxies
(Lehnert & Heckman 1996). We derive quantitative morphological information for
the optical galaxies hosting the submm emission; total and isophotal
magnitudes, Petrosian radius, effective radius, concentration, aspect ratio,
surface brightness, and asymmetry. We compare these morphological indices with
those of other galaxies lying within the same STIS images. Most strikingly, we
find ~70% of the submm galaxies to be extraordinarily large and elongated
relative to the field population, regardless of optical magnitude. Comparison
of the submm galaxy morphologies with those of optically selected galaxies at
z~2-3 reveal the submm galaxies to be a morphologically distinct population,
with generally larger sizes, higher concentrations and more prevalent

High-ionization mid-infrared lines as black hole mass and bolometric luminosity indicators in active galactic nuclei
We present relations of the black hole mass and the optical luminosity with
the velocity dispersion and the luminosity of the [Ne V] and the [O IV]
high-ionization lines in the mid-infrared (MIR) for 28 reverberation-mapped
active galactic nuclei. We used high-resolution Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph
and Infrared Space Observatory Short Wavelength Spectrometer data to fit the
profiles of these MIR emission lines that originate from the narrow-line region
of the nucleus. We find that the lines are often resolved and that the velocity
dispersion of [Ne V] and [O IV] follows a relation similar to that between the
black hole mass and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion found for local
galaxies. The luminosity of the [Ne V] and the [O IV] lines in these sources is
correlated with that of the optical 5100A continuum and with the black hole
mass. Our results provide a means to derive black hole properties in various
types of active galactic nuclei, including highly obscured systems.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ
Lost in the Transitions of Lebanon’s Second Republic: The Political Economy of (Un)governable Institutions, Practices and Crises
This article employs Giddens’ theory of structuration to identify why the practices of powersharing among the political elite in the context of post-war settings can spawn inflection points that divert the political process off course and incubate avenues for other transitions. It aims to explain how elite power sharing fragmented governance in Lebanon’s sectarian system, while incubating disagreements that necessitated further transitions. It highlights three transitions in post-war Lebanon: (A) the post-Taif process (1990–2005), (B) the post-2005 transition following the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon (2005–2019) and (C) the post-October 17 2019 transition. It finds that the reinforcement of elite practices of power sharing, patron-client networks and the apportionment of Lebanon’s political economy across the aforementioned phases have depleted state resources, which resulted in the sovereign debt crisis of 2020. It shows that the lack of national resources will most likely make Lebanese elites more eager to play a larger role in the informal sector, thus surviving on the resources of individuals
A Spitzer Unbiased Ultradeep Spectroscopic Survey
We carried out an unbiased, spectroscopic survey using the low-resolution
module of the infrared spectrograph (IRS) on board Spitzer targeting two 2.6
square arcminute regions in the GOODS-North field. IRS was used in spectral
mapping mode with 5 hours of effective integration time per pixel. One region
was covered between 14 and 21 microns and the other between 20 and 35 microns.
We extracted spectra for 45 sources. About 84% of the sources have reported
detections by GOODS at 24 microns, with a median F_nu(24um) ~ 100 uJy. All but
one source are detected in all four IRAC bands, 3.6 to 8 microns. We use a new
cross-correlation technique to measure redshifts and estimate IRS spectral
types; this was successful for ~60% of the spectra. Fourteen sources show
significant PAH emission, four mostly SiO absorption, eight present mixed
spectral signatures (low PAH and/or SiO) and two show a single line in
emission. For the remaining 17, no spectral features were detected. Redshifts
range from z ~ 0.2 to z ~ 2.2, with a median of 1. IR Luminosities are roughly
estimated from 24 microns flux densities, and have median values of 2.2 x
10^{11} L_{\odot} and 7.5 x 10^{11} L_{\odot} at z ~ 1 and z ~ 2 respectively.
This sample has fewer AGN than previous faint samples observed with IRS, which
we attribute to the fainter luminosities reached here.Comment: Published in Ap
The Mid-Infrared Spectra of Normal Galaxies
The mid-infrared spectra (2.5 to 5 and 5.7 to 11.6 mu) obtained by ISO-PHOT
reveal the interstellar medium emission from galaxies powered by star formation
to be strongly dominated by the aromatic features at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.3 mu.
Additional emission appears in-between the features, and an underlying
continuum is clearly evident at 3-5 mu. This continuum would contribute about a
third of the luminosity in the 3 to 13 mu range. The features together carry 5
to 30% of the 40-to-120 mu `FIR' luminosity. The relative fluxes in individual
features depend very weakly on galaxy parameters such as the far-infrared
colors, direct evidence that the emitting particles are not in thermal
equilibrium. The dip at 10 mu is unlikely to result from silicate absorption,
since its shape is invariant among galaxies. The continuum component has a f_nu
\~ nu^{0.65} shape between 3 and 5 mu and carries 1 to 4% of the FIR
luminosity; its extrapolation to longer wavelengths falls well below the
spectrum in the 6 to 12 mu range. This continuum component is almost certainly
of non-stellar origin, and is probably due to fluctuating grains without
aromatic features. The spectra reported here typify the integrated emission
from the interstellar medium of the majority of star-forming galaxies, and
could thus be used to obtain redshifts of highly extincted galaxies up to z=3

Multiwavelength Observations of the Low Metallicity Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy SBS 0335-052
New infrared and millimeter observations from Keck, Palomar, ISO, and OVRO
and archival data from the NRAO VLA and IRAS are presented for the low
metallicity blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 0335-052. Mid-infrared imaging shows
this young star-forming system is compact (0.31"; 80 pc) at 12.5 microns. The
large Br-gamma equivalent width (235 Angstroms) measured from integral field
spectroscopy is indicative of a ~5 Myr starburst. The central source appears to
be optically thin in emission, containing both a warm (~80 K) and a hot (~210
K) dust component, and the overall interstellar radiation field is quite
intense, about 10,000 times the intensity in the solar neighborhood. CO
emission is not detected, though the galaxy shows an extremely high global H I
gas-to-dust mass ratio, high even for blue compact dwarfs. Finally, the
galaxy's mid-infrared-to-optical and mid-to-near-infrared luminosity ratios are
quite high, whereas its far-infrared-to-radio and far-infrared-to-optical flux
ratios are surprisingly similar to what is seen in normal star-forming
galaxies. The relatively high bolometric infrared-to-radio ratio is more easily
understood in the context of such a young system with negligible nonthermal
radio continuum emission. These new lines of evidence may outline features
