    Does Classroom Interaction Encompass Gender Stereotyping? The Practice among Teachers in Kenya

    Gender and language studies have evolved from findings that exposed sexism in language to studies that consider paradigms such as dominance, difference and diversity in assessing the linguistic gender stereotypes in language. Research has established that there are certain stereotypes in language use which can be identified when males and females use language. This study set out to establish the extent to which these stereotypes are prevalent among Kenyan high school teachers and how it affects teaching and learning. The study adopted the qualitative research design. Schools, from where the teachers were sampled were identified through cluster and simple random sampling. Teachers were purposively sampled. Lesson observation which included recording, and focus group discussions were used to collect data. The researcher attended classes where the sampled teachers were teaching and recorded the lessons. The focus group discussion involved all the teachers in the sample.Data was analyzed using descriptions. One finding was that teachers frequently use stereotypical language in class. Another finding was that the gender stereotyping by teachers did not greatly impact teaching and learning, however, there could arise isolated cases where students were psychologically affected and could not do well in class.     ‘Last seen now’: Explaining teenage identities and social capital on social network sites in Kenya

    This article sought to address the gap in empirical research related to personal identity and social capital as gratification factors motivating teenage engagement on Social Network Sites (SNSs) in Kenya. We employed a mixed method research design in which Self-administered Questionnaires, Focus Group Discussions and In-depth Interviews were used in data collection. Participants were drawn from a sample of (n = 481) respondents from two sub-counties of Nairobi County. We focused on five popular SNSs namely, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and Pinterest. Findings revealed that personal identity and social capital significantly influenced teenagers’ engagement on SNSs. Specifically, high school teenagers’ engagement on SNSs was motivated by the need to bridge and maintain social capital more than bonding. We conclude that social network sites engagements among teenagers need to be harnessed for positive outcomes. Equally, we recommend positive use of SNSs in behavior change campaigns targeting teenagers.Keywords: Social Network Sites, Personal identity, Social capital, Uses and Gratifications, Teenager

    Ethical Sustainable Development for The Betterment of Humanity: Management Ethics’ Perspective

    To attain sustainable development for the betterment of humanity there is need for the balancing of its three dimensions: Economic growth, social progress and Environmental stewardship. Though Legislations relating to each of the three dimensions have been enacted by governments of various countries of the world, there is growing evidence that they have failed. The various scandals, undesirable business activities such as pollution of water bodies through disposal of industrial waste, exploitation of workers, giving bribes to government officials, fraud against consumers and egoistic decisions of some organization’s top management are some examples of managers omissions and commissions which needlessly stresses the outrageous ways that they use in their quest to maximize their company profits. An Equally important contributor to unsustainable development is omissions and/or commissions, refusal to listen to wise counsel of science and experts on the part of political leadership who manages state affairs. This calls for a paradigm shift to ethical approach. The ethical reasoning promises to be a panacea where legislations have so far failed. The purpose of this work is to discuss the concept of sustainable development viewed through the lens of management ethics, the role of management ethics in shaping the quality of decisions made by managers in furtherance of organizational or state  goals which have a bearing on the triple bottom line, ethical dilemmas in management and attempts to suggest ethical framework and strategies for use by managers in making decisions that will bring about sustainable development.     Rethinking the Quality and Relevance of University Education in Kenya from Entrepreneurial Perspective

    Many stakeholders have expressed concern about the many graduates from Kenyan universities who after qualifying, not only fail to get jobs but also fail to venture into alternative forms of engagement to earn their livelihood, a scenario that raises question as to the quality and relevance of University education they got. The concerns being raised calls for rethinking of the quality and relevance of university education in Kenya. This study, therefore, sought to investigate the propensity of university education in Kenya to inculcate entrepreneurial culture in graduates. The theory of planned behavior formed the theoretical foundation of the study. The study adopted a triangular design approach where views relating to entrepreneurial culture were sought from final year students from one public and one private university. The study targeted 3146 final year students drawn from University of Kabianga, (2272) and Kabarak University (874). From this, a sample of 614 students proportionately distributed among the two universities was drawn. Entrepreneurial environment was found to be more or less the same in both private and public universities recording moderate score. However, public university scored slightly higher. In conclusion, there is no significant difference in the levels of preference for entrepreneurship when comparison is made between public and private universities in Kenya. Arising from the current finding, the study recommends provision of better entrepreneurial support system.     Persistence in systems with conserved order parameter

    We consider the low-temperature coarsening dynamics of a one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet with conserved Kawasaki-like dynamics in the domain representation. Domains diffuse with size-dependent diffusion constant, D(l)lγD(l) \propto l^\gamma with γ=1\gamma = -1. We generalize this model to arbitrary γ\gamma, and derive an expression for the domain density, N(t)tϕN(t) \sim t^{-\phi} with ϕ=1/(2γ)\phi=1/(2-\gamma), using a scaling argument. We also investigate numerically the persistence exponent θ\theta characterizing the power-law decay of the number, Np(t)N_p(t), of persistent (unflipped) spins at time tt, and find Np(t)tθN_{p}(t)\sim t^{-\theta} where θ\theta depends on γ\gamma. We show how the results for ϕ\phi and θ\theta are related to similar calculations in diffusion-limited cluster-cluster aggregation (DLCA) where clusters with size-dependent diffusion constant diffuse through an immobile `empty' phase and aggregate irreversibly on impact. Simulations show that, while ϕ\phi is the same in both models, θ\theta is different except for γ=0\gamma=0.     Socio-Economic Effects of Liberalization of Small Scale Tea Sector in Kenya: Evidence from Tea Farmers in Konoin District

    Liberalization in Kenya started in 1990’s and continued ro date with far reaching effects on various sectors of Kenyan economy. The aim of this study was to investigate socio-economic effect of liberalization of small scale tea sector. The study sought to: Determine how liberalization has affected the living standard of the farmers, to investigate the impact of liberalization of tea sector on the competitiveness of small scale tea farmers and analyze the effect of liberalization on the performances of KTDA managed tea factories. A case study design was used in the study. The target population was 380 from which a sample of 38 was selected. In collecting data , a questionnaires was used. Descriptive statistics were computed. The findings revealed that Liberalization has exposed the smallholder and factories stiff competition due to entrants of new firms into the tea business. Factories have been ‘forced’ to streamline their operations to cope with completion. Effects of liberalization to farmers is mixed: On the positive farmers have been relieved of monopolistic tendencies of KTDA such as unilateral price determination and farmers have had a much bigger say in the management of tea factories.     Terahertz Security Image Quality Assessment by No-reference Model Observers

    To provide the possibility of developing objective image quality assessment (IQA) algorithms for THz security images, we constructed the THz security image database (THSID) including a total of 181 THz security images with the resolution of 127*380. The main distortion types in THz security images were first analyzed for the design of subjective evaluation criteria to acquire the mean opinion scores. Subsequently, the existing no-reference IQA algorithms, which were 5 opinion-aware approaches viz., NFERM, GMLF, DIIVINE, BRISQUE and BLIINDS2, and 8 opinion-unaware approaches viz., QAC, SISBLIM, NIQE, FISBLIM, CPBD, S3 and Fish_bb, were executed for the evaluation of the THz security image quality. The statistical results demonstrated the superiority of Fish_bb over the other testing IQA approaches for assessing the THz image quality with PLCC (SROCC) values of 0.8925 (-0.8706), and with RMSE value of 0.3993. The linear regression analysis and Bland-Altman plot further verified that the Fish__bb could substitute for the subjective IQA. Nonetheless, for the classification of THz security images, we tended to use S3 as a criterion for ranking THz security image grades because of the relatively low false positive rate in classifying bad THz image quality into acceptable category (24.69%). Interestingly, due to the specific property of THz image, the average pixel intensity gave the best performance than the above complicated IQA algorithms, with the PLCC, SROCC and RMSE of 0.9001, -0.8800 and 0.3857, respectively. This study will help the users such as researchers or security staffs to obtain the THz security images of good quality.     Kenya’s tea industry depends predominantly on imported NPK fertilizers to replenish nutrients removed through plucking. In this respect, two blended fertilizers containing NPKS 25:5:5:4+9Ca+2.6Mg and NPKS 23:5:5:4+10Ca+3Mg with trace elements have been produced in the country. However, contribution of the blended fertilizers to optimal tea yields had not been determined. The study aimed to evaluate the optimal levels of the two blended fertilizers on tea grown in the highlands of Kenya. The blended fertilizers were evaluated in two sites, i.e. Timbilil estate in Kericho and Kagochi farm in Nyeri. The trial was laid out in a randomized complete block design with two blended fertilizers and the standard NPK 26:5:5 as a control. The treatments were applied at four fertilizer rates (0-control, 75, 150 and 225 kg N ha-1 yr-1),  with three replications. The results showed that application of 225 kg N ha-1 yr-1 blended fertilizer NPKS 25:5:5:4+9Ca+2.6Mg in Timbilil produced mean yield of 2,995 kg Mt ha-1 compared with 3,099 kg Mt ha-1 from the standard NPK. In Kagochi, the highest yield was 1,975 kg Mt ha-1 obtained from the application of the same blended fertilizer NPKS 25:5:5:4+9Ca+2.6Mg at 75 kg N ha-1 yr-1. The highest yields in both sites were obtained during a warm-dry season except in 2015-2016. This study concluded that based on the annual and seasonal yields, the two blended fertilizers and the standard type had the same effectiveness, irrespective of clones and sites. However, the fertilizer rates affected the tea yield

    Noise-Aided Logic in an Electronic Analog of Synthetic Genetic Networks

    We report the experimental verification of noise-enhanced logic behaviour in an electronic analog of a synthetic genetic network, composed of two repressors and two constitutive promoters. We observe good agreement between circuit measurements and numerical prediction, with the circuit allowing for robust logic operations in an optimal window of noise. Namely, the input-output characteristics of a logic gate is reproduced faithfully under moderate noise, which is a manifestation of the phenomenon known as Logical Stochastic Resonance.
