Pentagrams and paradoxes
Klyachko and coworkers consider an orthogonality graph in the form of a
pentagram, and in this way derive a Kochen-Specker inequality for spin 1
systems. In some low-dimensional situations Hilbert spaces are naturally
organised, by a magical choice of basis, into SO(N) orbits. Combining these
ideas some very elegant results emerge. We give a careful discussion of the
pentagram operator, and then show how the pentagram underlies a number of other
quantum "paradoxes", such as that of Hardy.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
Neuroinflammatory markers associate with cognitive decline after major surgery:Findings of an explorative study
OBJECTIVE
Longâterm cognitive decline is an adverse outcome after major surgery associated with increased risk for mortality and morbidity. We studied the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum biochemical inflammatory response to a standardized orthopedic surgical procedure and the possible association with longâterm changes in cognitive function. We hypothesized that the CSF inflammatory response pattern after surgery would differ in patients having longâterm cognitive decline defined as a composite cognitive z score of â„1.0 compared to patients without longâterm cognitive decline at 3 months postsurgery.
METHODS
Serum and CSF biomarkers of inflammation and bloodâbrain barrier (BBB) integrity were measured preoperatively and up to 48 hours postoperatively, and cognitive function was assessed preoperatively and at 2 to 5âdays and 3 months postoperatively.
RESULTS
Surgery was associated with a pronounced increase in inflammatory biomarkers in both CSF and blood throughout the 48âhour study period. A principal component (PC) analysis was performed on 52 inflammatory biomarkers. The 2 first PC (PC1 and PC2) construct outcome variables on CSF biomarkers were significantly associated with longâterm cognitive decline at 3 months, but none of the PC construct serum variables showed a significant association with longâterm cognitive decline at 3 months. Patients both with and patients without longâterm cognitive decline showed early transient increases of the astroglial biomarkers Sâ100B and glial fibrillary acidic protein in CSF, and in BBB permeability (CSF/serum albumin ratio).
INTERPRETATION
Surgery rapidly triggers a temporal neuroinflammatory response closely associated with longâterm cognitive outcome postsurgery. The findings of this explorative study require validation in a larger surgical patient cohort. ANN NEUROL 202
Elements in games for virtual heritage applications
The methods of preserving cultural heritage are becoming increasingly digital, and with this development it is becoming all the more open to public scrutiny. The field of virtual heritage and their applications, which digitally preserve cultural heritage using virtual reality, are struggling to live up to the expectations of the public. The virtual heritage field has begun to look for solutions to their problems in other fields, such as that of video games. This thesis identifies 17 elements which are sought after for incorporation in virtual heritage applications, by conducting a literature review of recent virtual heritage research and organizing the findings into a matrix. The occurrence of the identified elements in four different modern entertainment video games is further analyzed and described. The resulted element matrix and game reviews could be used in the future development of virtual heritage applications, and of cultural heritage or historical video games

Uncanny graphical elements : Sigmund Freud's "The Uncanny" as starting point in creation of computer game environment
Simplices, frames and questions about reality
This thesis is centered around mathematical structures of fundamental importance to quantum foundations and quantum information. Its introductory part acquaints the reader with the basics of the general ideas of frames and simplices, as well as with some central quantum mechanical concepts like density matrices and Hilbert spaces. Article I deals with the question of contextuality in relation to quantum measurement. Using a specific strategy of assigning truth values to state vectors, some aspects of the Kochen-Specker theorem are explored. In Article II an object called SIC-POVM is studied, more specifically by investigating the behaviour of a function used to measure the closeness of an arbitrary vector set to such a configuration. In addition to putting the results of these two papers into context, the aim of this thesis is to offer a discussion of the search for connections between the SIC-POVM and so-called MUBs in odd prime dimensions, as well as a brief comment on a structure here introduced as a Kochen-Specker frame; it is shown that the latter plays a part in the proof of Hardy's paradox as well as for an inequality for testing contextuality due to Klyachko et al
