Size distribution of embryos produced by crystal-rod contacts

    Get PDF
We performed contact nucleation experiments on the (010) face of potassium hydrogen phthalate (KAP) crystals growing in a stagnant supersaturated aqueous solution and determined - after a given growth time t - (ex situ) the crystal size distribution (CSD) of the secondary nuclei (which at t = 0 are called "embryos") by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The origin of the secondary nuclei could clearly be revealed (damage to the crystal surface). The CSD can be fitted with a log-normal distribution which is typical for many powders obtained by grinding. Minimum size and mean size can be quantitatively understood by elementary fracture mechanics

Socioeconomic status and breast cancer survival in the southeastern Netherlands, 1980-1989

Socioeconomic differences in breast cancer survival in the southeastern Netherlands between 1980 and 1989 were studied (n = 3928), as was the impact of prognostic factors (stage at diagnosis, morphology, and treatment) on such differences. An area-based measure of Socioeconomic status (SES) in five groups, based on the postcode of residence at the time of diagnosis, was used. In univariate analyses the relative survival rate was used to correct for causes of death other than breast cancer. The measure of outcome in multivariate analyses was the hazard ratio. The results of both univariate and multivariate analyses suggested a small survival advantage for the higher SES groups. In a mode

    Field homogeneity in OSCAR-MEE

Soil properties at the beginning of the MEE (Multi Environment Experiments) were statistically analyzed in order to verify the field homogeneity. The initial soil properties represent the starting point to interpret the effect of CC and LM on soil fertility during crop cycle.Soil properties of the fields were quite homogeneous at the beginning of crop cycles (first and second). The soil properties of the experimental fields in the selected areas showed a wide variety of pedons to be used for the comparison of CC and LM effect in different climate zones. Soils from the Northern European sites are more acid and richer of nutrients and organic matter with respect to the soils in Southern sites

Estimating the incidence of equine viral arteritis and the sensitivity of its surveillance in the French breeding stock

Equine viral arteritis (EVA) may have serious economic impact on the equine industry. For this reason, it is monitored in many countries, especially in breeding stock, to avoid its spread during breeding activities. In France, surveillance is mainly based on serological tests, since mares are not vaccinated, but difficulties in interpreting certain series of results may impair the estimation of the number of outbreaks. In this study, we propose specific rules for identifying seroconversion in order to estimate the number of outbreaks that were detected by the breeding stock surveillance component (BSSC) in France between 2006 and 2013. A consensus among multidisciplinary experts was reached to consider seroconversion as a change in antibody titer from negative to at least 32, or as an eight-fold or greater increase in antibody level. Using these rules, 239 cases and 177 outbreaks were identified. Subsequently, we calculated the BSSC's sensitivity as the ratio of the number of detected outbreaks to the total number of outbreaks that occurred in breeding stock (including unreported outbreaks) estimated using a capture-recapture model. The total number of outbreaks was estimated at 215 (95% credible interval 195-249) and the surveillance sensitivity at 82% (CrI95% 71-91). Our results confirm EVA circulation in French breeding stock, show that neutralizing antibodies can persist up to eight years in naturally infected mares and suggest that certain mares have been reinfected. This study shows that the sensitivity of the BSSC is relatively high and supports its relevance to prevent the disease spreading through mating

Observation of the screening signature in the lateral photovoltage of electrons in the Quantum Hall regime

    Get PDF
The lateral photovoltage generated in the plane of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) by a focused light spot, exhibits a fine-structure in the quantum oscillations in a magnetic field near the Quantum Hall conductivity minima. A double peak structure occurs near the minima of the longitudinal conductivity oscillations. This is the characteristic signature of the interplay between screening and Landau quantization.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.

HUMeral Shaft Fractures: MEasuring Recovery after Operative versus Non-operative Treatment (HUMMER): A multicenter comparative observational study

    Get PDF
Background: Fractures of the humeral shaft are associated with a profound temporary (and in the elderly sometimes even permanent) impairment of independence and quality of life. These fractures can be treated operatively or non-operatively, but the optimal tailored treatment is an unresolved problem. As no high-quality comparative randomized or observational studies are available, a recent Cochrane review concluded there is no evidence of sufficient scientific quality available to inform the decision to operate or not. Since randomized controlled trials for this injury have shown feasibility issues, this study is designed to provide the best achievable evidence to answer this unresolved problem. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate functional recovery after operative versus non-operative treatment in adult patients who sustained a humeral shaft fracture. Secondary aims include the effect of treatment on pain, complications, generic health-related quality of life, time to resumption of activities of daily living and work, and cost-effectiveness. The main hypothesis is that operative treatment will result in faster recovery. Methods/design. The design of the study will be a multicenter prospective observational study of 400 patients who have sustained a humeral shaft fracture, AO type 12A or 12B. Treatment decision (i.e., operative or non-operative) will be left to the discretion of the treating surgeon. Critical elements of treatment will be registered and outcome will be monitored at regular intervals over the subsequent 12 months. The primary outcome measure is the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand score. Secondary outcome measures are the Constant score, pain level at both sides, range of motion of the elbow and shoulder joint at both sides, radiographic healing, rate of complications and (secondary) interventions, health-related quality of life (Short-Form 36 and EuroQol-5D), time to resumption of ADL/work, and cost-effectiveness. Data will be analyzed using univariate and multivariable analyses (including mixed effects regression analysis). The cost-effectiveness analysis will be performed from a societal perspective. Discussion. Successful completion of this trial will provide evidence on the effectiveness of operative versus non-operative treatment of patients with a humeral shaft fracture. Trial registration. The trial is registered at the Netherlands Trial Register (NTR3617)

The necessity of drawing up the annual production plan and the importance of establishment crop structure for next agricultural year

Planning represents establishment and substantiate the objectives, accomplish tasks and necessary resources for appropriate period plan ( of perspective, annual, quarterly, monthly). Drawing up annual production plan into a ferm is required primarily for evolution or involution recorded by economical phenomenes, which directly determines the operation of the farm. After determining the annual production plan can establish structures and cultures for the next agricultural year using modeling and simulation methods. Following the application of modeling and simulation methods in a farm resulting optimal dimensions of business operations with profit maximization in terms of economic efficiency increased
