The existence of an inverse limit of inverse system of measure spaces - a purely measurable case
The existence of an inverse limit of an inverse system of (probability) measure spaces has been investigated since the very beginning of the birth of the modern probability theory. Results from Kolmogorov
[10], Bochner [2], Choksi [5], Metivier [14], Bourbaki [3] among others have paved the way of the deep understanding of the problem under consideration. All the above results, however, call for some topological concepts, or at least ones which are closely related topological ones. In this paper we investigate purely measurable inverse systems of (probability) measure spaces, and give a sucient condition for the existence of a unique inverse limit. An example for the considered purely measurable inverse systems of (probability) measure spaces is also given
Universal interactive preferences
We prove that a universal preference type space exists under much more general conditions than those postulated by Epstein and Wang (1996). To wit, it is enough that preferences can be encoded by a countable collection of continuous functionals, while the preferences themselves need not necessarily be continuous or regular, like, e.g., in the case of lexicographic preferences. The proof relies on a far-reaching generalization of a method developed by Heifetz and Samet (1998)
What Drives People's Choices in Turn-Taking Games, if not Game-Theoretic Rationality?
In an earlier experiment, participants played a perfect information game
against a computer, which was programmed to deviate often from its backward
induction strategy right at the beginning of the game. Participants knew that
in each game, the computer was nevertheless optimizing against some belief
about the participant's future strategy. In the aggregate, it appeared that
participants applied forward induction. However, cardinal effects seemed to
play a role as well: a number of participants might have been trying to
maximize expected utility.
In order to find out how people really reason in such a game, we designed
centipede-like turn-taking games with new payoff structures in order to make
such cardinal effects less likely. We ran a new experiment with 50
participants, based on marble drop visualizations of these revised payoff
structures. After participants played 48 test games, we asked a number of
questions to gauge the participants' reasoning about their own and the
opponent's strategy at all decision nodes of a sample game. We also checked how
the verbalized strategies fit to the actual choices they made at all their
decision points in the 48 test games.
Even though in the aggregate, participants in the new experiment still tend
to slightly favor the forward induction choice at their first decision node,
their verbalized strategies most often depend on their own attitudes towards
risk and those they assign to the computer opponent, sometimes in addition to
considerations about cooperativeness and competitiveness.Comment: In Proceedings TARK 2017, arXiv:1707.0825
Incomplete Information
In interactive contexts such as games and economies, it is important to take account not only of what the players believe about substantive matters (such as payoffs), but also of what they believe about the beliefs of other players. Two different but equivalent ways of dealing with this matter, the semantic and the syntactic, are set forth. Canonical and universal semantic systems are then defined and constructed, and the concepts of common knowledge and common priors formulated and characterized. The last two sections discuss relations with Bayesian games of incomplete information and their applications, and with interactive epistemology -- the theory of multi-agent knowledge and belief as formulated in mathematical logic
Subdiffraction optical resolution of a gold nanosphere located within the nanojet of a Mie-resonant dielectric microsphere
pre-printWe theoretically investigate light scattering from a bi-sphere system consisting of a gold nanosphere and a lossless dielectric microsphere illuminated at a resonant optical wavelength of the microsphere. Using generalized multisphere Mie theory, we find that a gold nanosphere 100 times smaller than the dielectric microsphere can be detected with a subdiffraction resolution as fine as one-third wavelength in the background medium when the microsphere is illuminated at a Mie resonance. Otherwise, off-resonance, the spatial resolution reverts to that of the nonresonant nanojet, approximately one-half wavelength in the background medium. An important potential biophotonics application is the detection of antibody-conjugated gold nanoparticles attached to the membranes of living cells in an aqueous environment

The counter-propagating Rossby-wave perspective on baroclinic instability. Part IV: Nonlinear life cycles
Pairs of counter-propagating Rossby waves (CRWs) can be used to describe baroclinic instability in linearized primitive-equation dynamics, employing simple propagation and interaction mechanisms at only two locations in the meridional plane—the CRW ‘home-bases’. Here, it is shown how some CRW properties are remarkably robust as a growing baroclinic wave develops nonlinearly. For example, the phase difference between upper-level and lower-level waves in potential-vorticity contours, defined initially at the home-bases of the CRWs, remains almost constant throughout baroclinic wave life cycles, despite the occurrence of frontogenesis and Rossby-wave breaking. As the lower wave saturates nonlinearly the whole baroclinic wave changes phase speed from that of the normal mode to that of the self-induced phase speed of the upper CRW. On zonal jets without surface meridional shear, this must always act to slow the baroclinic wave. The direction of wave breaking when a basic state has surface meridional shear can be anticipated because the displacement structures of CRWs tend to be coherent along surfaces of constant basic-state angular velocity, U. This results in up-gradient horizontal momentum fluxes for baroclinically growing disturbances. The momentum flux acts to shift the jet meridionally in the direction of the increasing surface U, so that the upper CRW breaks in the same direction as occurred at low level

The counter-propagating Rossby-wave perspective on baroclinic instability. Part III: Primitive-equation disturbances on the sphere
Baroclinic instability of perturbations described by the linearized primitive quations, growing on steady zonal jets on the sphere, can be understood in terms of the interaction of pairs of counter-propagating Rossby waves (CRWs). The CRWs can be viewed as the basic components of the dynamical system where the Hamiltonian is the pseudoenergy and each CRW has a zonal coordinate and pseudomomentum. The theory holds for adiabatic frictionless flow to the extent that truncated forms of pseudomomentum and pseudoenergy are globally conserved. These forms focus attention on Rossby wave activity. Normal mode (NM) dispersion relations for realistic jets are explained in terms of the two CRWs associated with each unstable NM pair. Although derived from the NMs, CRWs have the conceptual advantage that their structure is zonally untilted, and can be anticipated given only the basic state. Moreover, their zonal propagation, phase-locking and mutual interaction can all be understood by ‘PV-thinking’ applied at only two ‘home-bases’—potential vorticity (PV) anomalies at one home-base induce circulation anomalies, both locally and at the other home-base, which in turn can advect the PV gradient and modify PV anomalies there. At short wavelengths the upper CRW is focused in the mid-troposphere just above the steering level of the NM, but at longer wavelengths the upper CRW has a second wave-activity maximum at the tropopause. In the absence of meridional shear, CRW behaviour is very similar to that of Charney modes, while shear results in a meridional slant with height of the air-parcel displacement-structures of CRWs in sympathy with basic-state zonal angular-velocity surfaces. A consequence of this slant is that baroclinically growing eddies (on jets broader than the Rossby radius) must tilt downshear in the horizontal, giving rise to up-gradient momentum fluxes that tend to accelerate the barotropic component of the jet
On the normal form of synchronization and resonance between vorticity waves in shear flow instability
A central mechanism of linearised two dimensional shear instability can be
described in terms of a nonlinear, action-at-a-distance, phase-locking
resonance between two vorticity waves which propagate counter to their local
mean flow as well as counter to each other. Here we analyze the prototype of
this interaction as an autonomous, nonlinear dynamical system. The wave
interaction equations can be written in a generalized Hamiltonian action-angle
form. The pseudo-energy serves as the Hamiltonian of the system, the action
coordinates are the contribution of the vorticity waves to the wave-action, and
the angles are the phases of the vorticity waves. The term "generalized
action-angle" emphasizes that the action of each wave is generally time
dependent, which allows instability. The synchronization mechanism between the
wave phases depends on the cosine of their relative phase, rather than the sine
as in the Kuramoto model. The unstable normal modes of the linearised dynamics
correspond to the stable fixed points of the dynamical system and vice versa.
Furthermore, the normal form of the wave interaction dynamics reveals a new
type of inhomogeneous bifurcation -- annihilation of a pair of stable and
unstable fixed points yields the emergence of two neutral center fixed points
of opposite circulation
Applications in adaptive cluster sampling of Gulf of Alaska rockfish
Adaptive cluster sampling (ACS) has been the subject of many
publications about sampling aggregated populations. Choosing the criterion value that invokes ACS remains problematic. We address this problem using data from a June 1999 ACS survey for rockfish, specifically for Pacific ocean perch (Sebastes alutus), and for shortraker (S. borealis) and rougheye (S. aleutianus) rockfish combined. Our hypotheses were that ACS would outperform simple random sampling (SRS) for S. alutus and would be more applicable
for S. alutus than for S. borealis and S. aleutianus combined because populations of S. alutus are thought to be more aggregated. Three alternatives for choosing a criterion value were investigated. We chose the strategy that yielded the lowest criterion value and simulated the higher criterion values with the data after the survey. Systematic random sampling was conducted across the whole area to determine the lowest criterion value, and then a new
systematic random sample was taken with adaptive sampling around each tow that exceeded the fixed criterion value. ACS yielded gains in precision (SE) over SRS. Bootstrapping showed that the distribution of an ACS estimator is approximately normal, whereas the SRS sampling distribution is skewed and bimodal. Simulation showed that a higher criterion value results in substantially less adaptive
sampling with little tradeoff in precision. When time-efficiency was examined, ACS quickly added more samples,
but sampling edge units caused this efficiency to be lessened, and the gain in efficiency did not measurably affect our conclusions. ACS for S. alutus should be incorporated with a fixed criterion value equal to the top quartile of previously collected survey data. The second
hypothesis was confirmed because ACS did not prove to be more effective for S. borealis-S. aleutianus. Overall, our ACS results were not as optimistic as those previously published in the literature, and indicate the need for further study of this sampling method
