A Combinatorial Approach to -Fibonacci Numbers
In this paper we explore generalized “-Fibonacci Numbers” using a combinatorial “tiling” interpretation. This approach allows us to provide simple, intuitive proofs to several identities involving -Fibonacci Numbers presented by F.T. Howard and Curtis Cooper in the August, 2011, issue of the Fibonacci Quarterly. We also explore a connection between the generalized Fibonacci numbers and a generalized form of binomial coefficients
Disc antenna enhanced infrared spectroscopy: From felf-assembled monolayers to membrane proteins
Plasmonic surfaces have emerged as a powerful platform for biomolecular sensing applications and can be designed to optimize the plasmonic resonance for probing molecular vibrations at utmost sensitivity. Here, we present a facile procedure to generate metallic microdisc antenna arrays that are employed in surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy of biomolecules. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grids are used as shadow mask deployed during physical vapor deposition of gold. The resulting disc-shaped antennas exhibit enhancement factors of the vibrational bands of 4 × 104 giving rise to a detection limit <1 femtomol (10–15 mol) of molecules. Surface-bound monolayers of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid show polyelectrolyte behavior when titrated with cations in the aqueous medium. Conformational rigidity of the self-assembled monolayer is validated by density functional theory calculations. The membrane protein sensory rhodopsin II is tethered to the disc antenna arrays and is fully functional as inferred from the light-induced SEIRA difference spectra. As an advance to previous studies, the accessible frequency range is improved and extended into the fingerprint region
The Brownfields Phenomenon: Much Ado about Something or the Timing of the Shrewd?
This paper provides an overview of the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated properties known as “brownfields.” It has three principal parts. First, we introduce the brownfields phenomenon and its drivers, drawing on the body of available empirical evidence to discuss characteristics of individual brownfield redevelopment projects. Second, we present findings from a recent study we have conducted that examines the relative attractiveness to private developers of public interventions to promote brownfields redevelopment. Third, we briefly summarize some of the problems with brownfields development and policy and propose an approach to promote wider societal benefits of brownfields development. We conclude with several broad questions about brownfields policy and practice.brownfields, contamination, economic development, infill
Beating of exciton-dressed states in a single semiconductor InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot
We report picosecond control of excitonic dressed states in a single semiconductor quantum dot. A strong laser pulse couples the exciton and biexciton states, to form an Autler-Townes doublet of the neutral exciton transition. The Rabi-splitting, and hence the admixture of the dressed states follows the envelope of the picosecond control laser. We create a superposition of dressed states, and observe the resulting beat: a direct measurement of a Rabi oscillation in time delay rather than the usual power domain
Counting on r-Fibonacci Numbers
We prove the r-Fibonacci identities of Howard and Cooper using a combinatorial tiling approach
2012 State of Metropolitan Housing Report
This report updates Metropolitan Housing Coalition's nine annual measures of fair and affordable housing for the Louisville, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area: Concentration of Subsidized Housing; Housing Segregation; Renters with Excessive Cost Burden; Production and Rehabilitation of Affordable Housing; Homeownership Rate; Access to Homeownership; Foreclosures; Homelessness; and Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and HOME Funds. The 2012 State of Metropolitan Housing Report clearly demonstrates Metropolitan Louisville's growing need for safe, fair, and affordable housing. For the first time, the tenth annual State of Metropoltian Housing Report includes data on the number of children experiencing homelessness in the MSA's public school systems; before MHC reported only on Jefferson County Public Schools. The 2012 report also includes a focus topic: vacant properties and their impact on the community as well as current efforts and best practices that to address this issue. Additionally, the report also drills down into the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, a federal program designed to address the issue of vacant properties, and how it was used in Louisville
Thermo-Economic Analysis of Zeotropic Mixtures and Pure Working Fluids in Organic Rankine Cycles for Waste Heat Recovery
We present a thermo-economic analysis of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) for waste heat recovery. A case study for a heat source temperature of 150 °C and a subcritical, saturated cycle is performed. As working fluids R245fa, isobutane, isopentane, and the mixture of isobutane and isopentane are considered. The minimal temperature difference in the evaporator and the condenser, as well as the mixture composition are chosen as variables in order to identify the most suitable working fluid in combination with optimal process parameters under thermo-economic criteria. In general, the results show that cost-effective systems have a high minimal temperature difference ΔTPP,C at the pinch-point of the condenser and a low minimal temperature difference ΔTPP,E at the pinch-point of the evaporator. Choosing isobutane as the working fluid leads to the lowest costs per unit exergy with 52.0 €/GJ (ΔTPP,E = 1.2 K; ΔTPP,C = 14 K). Considering the major components of the ORC, specific costs range between 1150 €/kW and 2250 €/kW. For the zeotropic mixture, a mole fraction of 90% isobutane leads to the lowest specific costs per unit exergy. A further analysis of the ORC system using isobutane shows high sensitivity of the costs per unit exergy for the selected cost estimation methods and for the isentropic efficiency of the turbine
