    The Computational Visual Media (CVM) conference series is intended to provide a major international forum for exchanging novel research ideas and significant computational methods that either underpin or apply visual media. The primary goal is to promote cross-disciplinary research to amalgamate aspects of computer graphics, computer vision, machine learning, image and video processing, visualization and geometric computing. The main topics of interest to CVM include classification, composition, retrieval, synthesis, cognition and understanding of visual media (e.g., images, videos, 3D geometry). The Computational Visual Media Conference 2020 (CVM 2020), the 8th international conference in the series, will be held during September 3–5, 2020, at Macau University of Science and Technology. Following the success of previous CVM conferences, CVM 2020 attracted broad attention from researchers worldwide. A total of 118 technical papers were submitted and reviewed by an international program committee comprising 86 selected experts. A total of 30 papers were accepted for oral presentation..

    Identification of the growth arrest and DNA damage protein GADD34 in the normal human heart and demonstration of alterations in expression following myocardial ischaemia

    Growth arrest and DNA damage protein 34 (GADD34) is a multifunctional protein upregulated in response to cellular stress and is believed to mediate DNA repair and restore protein synthesis. In the present study we have examined GADD34 immunoreactivity in human myocardial tissue at defined survival times following cardiac arrest and determined alterations in expression following ischaemia. In the normal human heart, GADD34 immunoreactivity was generally intense and present within most cells. GADD34 immunoreactivity was downregulated in tissue displaying ischaemic damage and remained intense in adjacent non-infarcted tissue. Unlike brain, GADD34 was not found to be upregulated in the peri-infarct zone. Cells displaying apoptotic changes were located in regions displaying reduced GADD34 immunoreactivity. In the brain, it is thought that GADD34 supports re-initiation of protein synthesis following ischaemia. Similarly, GADD34 may perform important functions in cardiac tissue in response to ischaemia

    Spontaneous CP Violating Phase as The CKM Matrix Phase

    We propose that the CP violating phase in the CKM mixing matrix is identical to the CP phases responsible for the spontaneous CP violation in the Higgs potential. A specific multi-Higgs model with Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is constructed to realize this idea. The CP violating phase does not vanish when all Higgs masses become large. There are flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) interactions mediated by neutral Higgs bosons at the tree level. However, unlike general multi-Higgs models, the FCNC Yukawa couplings are fixed in terms of the quark masses and CKM mixing angles. Implications for meson-anti-meson mixing, including recent data on D−DˉD-\bar D mixing, and neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) are studied. We find that the neutral Higgs boson masses can be at the order of one hundred GeV. The neutron EDM can be close to the present experimental upper bound.Comment: 16 pages, RevTex.     Formation of an Edge Striped Phase in Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

    We have performed an exact diagonalization study of up to N=12 interacting electrons on a disk at filling ν=1/3\nu={1/3} for both Coulomb and V1V_1 short-range interaction for which Laughlin wave function is the exact solution. For Coulomb interaction and N≥10N\geq 10 we find persistent radial oscillations in electron density, which are not captured by the Laughlin wave function. Our results srongly suggest formation of a chiral edge striped phase in quantum Hall systems. The amplitude of the charge density oscillations decays slowly, perhaps as a square root of the distance from the edge; thus the spectrum of edge excitations is likely to be affected.Comment: 4 pages, 3 Figs. include

    Determining grain seed micronutrient contents (iron and zinc) and cooking time for selected dry bean cultivars

    Micronutrient deficiencies caused by lack of Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn) and Vitamin A in the human body have negative effect with regard to health issues worldwide. Imbalances of these nutrients in the human body create a significant risk of illness and mortality among children under five years of age, pregnant women and lactating mothers. Some of the food crops that thought to reduce micronutrients include rice, sweet potato, dry bean, sorghum, corn, barley, and finger millet have been biofortified through ways of agronomic practices, conventional breeding, or modern biotechnology. Despite the fact that dry beans address Fe and Zn  deficiencies based on recommended dietary allowances (RDA), they often take a long time to cook. Many communities have limited cooking resources which make them rely on burning wood, charcoal or other biofuels that require more time and money. This study identified dry bean cultivars with enhanced Fe and Zn concentration levels and fast cooking time from 200 cultivars. Experiments were conducted under a complete randomized block design with two replications, 200 cultivars, and two different agro-ecologies. Iron and Zinc concentration levels were determined from the harvested seed grains of each bean cultivar using X-Ray Fluorescence while cooking time of similar cultivars were determined using the Mattson cooker. The variation of Fe and Zn concentration was significantly different at (p<0.001) among the treatments and environments. The range was between 46.76 mg/kg to 107.25 mg/kg for Fe and 21.70 mg/kg to 42.35 mg/kg for Zn concentration. From two testing sites, the concentration of Fe was higher at Lyamungo than SARI and Zn showed inversely proportional to these tested sites which means that the  environment and soils were not homogenous in terms of soil health. The highest water uptake was 61.54% and the lowest was 3.70% and the higher the water uptake the lower the cooking time. Fast cooking time was ~15 min and the longest was ~76 min. Small seed-sized cultivars showed fast  cooking time than large-seeded. These two traits in identified cultivars will enhance dry bean consumption, which will contribute to alleviating micronutrient deficiencies in this global growing population

    Approximate analytic solutions of the Dirac equation with Tietz-Hua (TH) potential are obtained for arbitrary spin-orbit quantum number using the Pekeris approximation scheme to deal with the spin-orbit coupling terms In the presence of exact spin and pseudo-spin (pspin) symmetric limitation, the bound state energy eigenvalues and associated two-component wave functions of the Dirac particle moving in the field of attractive and repulsive TH potential are obtained using the parametric generalization of the Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method. Filmography: p. 124-125.This thesis attempts to look at how Chinese animation cinema has evolved over the years and how the Chinese nation is being constructed and contested through animation filmic texts and animation filmmaking practices as sites where national and transnational cultural and economic flows converge and contend. The unraveling of the intricate relations between animation cinema and nation is intended to shed light on the understanding of contemporary cultural, social and media scapes in China. The Introduction addresses motivations and goals, critical questions, and over-riding theoretical framework and methodology. Chapter One explores the origin of the pursuit of a national animation style by investigating early Chinese animation cinema of the pre-reform period. It also serves as a backdrop against which the present discourse of revitalizing national animation cinema is being articulated.(cont.) Chapter Two closely examines a commercial 3D feature-length animation production - Thru the Moebius Strip, as a case of "homemade" in the era of global capitalism, to look into modern nation-building both at the industry level and the filmic text level. Chapter Three closely examines another recent feature production, Little Soldier Zhang Ga, which can be read as a new type of "national" film that inherited the heritages of the socialist cinema, but aims at revolutionizing the animation cinema.     The use of small angle neutron scattering with contrast matching and variable adsorbate partial pressures in the study of porosity in activated carbons

    The porosity of a typical activated carbon is investigated with small angle neutron scattering (SANS), using the contrast matching technique, by changing the hydrogen/deuterium content of the absorbed liquid (toluene) to extract the carbon density at different scattering vector (Q) values and by measuring the p/p0 dependence of the SANS, using fully deuterated toluene. The contrast matching data shows that the apparent density is Q-dependent, either because of pores opening near the carbon surface during the activation processor or changes in D-toluene density in nanoscale pores. For each p/p0 value, evaluation of the Porod Invariant yields the fraction of empty pores. Hence, comparison with the adsorption isotherm shows that the fully dry powder undergoes densification when liquid is added. An algebraic function is developed to fit the SANS signal at each p/p0 value hence yielding the effective Kelvin radii of the liquid surfaces as a function of p/p0. These values, when compared with the Kelvin Equation, show that the resultant surface tension value is accurate for the larger pores but tends to increase for small (nanoscale) pores. The resultant pore size distribution is less model-dependent than for the traditional methods of analyzing the adsorption isotherms

    Various series expansions for the bilayer S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet

    Various series expansions have been developed for the two-layer, S=1/2, square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. High temperature expansions are used to calculate the temperature dependence of the susceptibility and specific heat. At T=0, Ising expansions are used to study the properties of the N\'{e}el-ordered phase, while dimer expansions are used to calculate the ground-state properties and excitation spectra of the magnetically disordered phase. The antiferromagnetic order-disorder transition point is determined to be (J2/J1)c=2.537(5)(J_2/J_1)_c=2.537(5). Quantities computed include the staggered magnetization, the susceptibility, the triplet spin-wave excitation spectra, the spin-wave velocity, and the spin-wave stiffness. We also estimates that the ratio of the intra- and inter-layer exchange constants to be J2/J1≃0.07J_2/J_1\simeq 0.07 for cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.2YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.2}.Comment: RevTeX, 9 figure

    CP violation in a multi-Higgs doublet model with flavor changing neutral current

    We study CP violation in a multi-Higgs doublet model based on a S3×Z3S_3 \times Z_3 horizontal symmetry where CKM phase is not the principal source of CP violation. We consider two mechanisms for CP violation in this model: a) CP violation due to complex Yukawa couplings; and b) CP violation due to scalar-pseudoscalar Higgs boson mixings. Both mechanisms can explain the observed CP violation in the neutral Kaon system. ϵ′/ϵ\epsilon'/\epsilon due to neutral Higgs boson exchange is small in both mechanisms, but charged Higgs boson con- tributions can be as large as 10−310^{-3} for a), and 10−410^{-4} for b). CP violation in the neutral B system is, however, quite different from the Minimal Standard Model. The neutron Electric Dipole Moment can be as large as the present ex- perimental bound, and can be used to constrain charged Higgs boson masses. The electron EDM is one order of magnitude below the experimental bound in case b) and smaller in case a).Comment: 22 pages, Revtex, OITS-52
