Facing a changing labour force in China: Determinants of trust and reciprocity in an experimental labour market

    Get PDF
Due to economic and demographic changes highly educated women are increasingly important for the Chinese labour market. Gender is a well-studied determinant of behaviour in economic experiments, as are similarly academic major, age and income. We study determinants of trust and reciprocity for Chinese subjects in a labour market experiment using two variants of a gift exchange framework with employers and workers. We find that women are significantly less trusting and less reciprocal in one game variant while this relationship is only clear for reciprocity in the other variant

Assortment Size and Performance of Online Sellers: An Inverted U-Shaped Relationship

This paper investigates the role of assortment size in sellersā€™ performance in the e-commerce context, which has been primarily associated with lowered search costs and switching costs. However, in contrast to the findings in the literature, our theoretical analysis postulates an inverted U-shaped association, showing that performance of online sellers increases and then decreases as the assortment size becomes larger. The nonlinear effect can be effectively explained by the interplay between the benefits derived from simultaneous consumer utility and the liabilities derived from the competition-intensifying effect. Additionally, the optimal level of assortment size is reduced when market density or product uncertainty is high. Using a data set of 10,000 online sellers from a large e-commerce platform, our hypotheses concerning the inverted U-shaped curve and moderation effects of market density and product uncertainty are statistically supported. Our research contributes to the assortment literature by revealing the special effects of assortment size in the online retailing context, and provides practical implications for online sellersā€™ assortment planning and optimization under both general settings and specific conditions

The financial comprehensive appraisal method plays an essential role in decision-making for investors and reflecting real companyā€™s financial comprehensive situation. Because of the grey characteristics of financial information, this paper constructs a grey relational model with a index system of financial comprehensive appraisal by grey relation theory. It is applied to listed companies in real estate industry in China and tested in the both dynamic and static state, and then the result is that the ranking of financial comprehensive evaluation of the listed companies in the real estate industry is almost as same as the real ranking. It shows that the financial comprehensive appraisal method on the grey relational analysis is a kind of effective and good method of evaluating companyā€™s financial comprehensive situation

ā€œGROWTH OF THE FITTERā€: EVOLUTIONARY GROWTH PATHS AND FIRM SIZE OF START-UPS IN E-MARKETS

Existing research related to firm growth has not paid sufficient attention to the growth paths of online stores in e-markets. The linkage between growth path and firm size has not been built up. This paper aims to investigate evolutionary trajectories and their effects on firm size. Theoretically, conceptually define three types of distinguishable paths, namely the convergent, tepid, and sustained paths. We then propose related theoretical hypotheses that reflect the impacts of different types of growth paths on the resulting firm size. To empirically validate the proposed hypotheses, we applied the trajectory analysis method with a novel indicator, the relative expansion rate, based on a data set that consists of 5,582 online stores on Taobao.com, the largest e-commerce platform in the world. Testing results largely support our hypotheses and suggest that the sustained growth path is the ideal mode nascent online sellers should struggle for, since it is significantly positively related to the firm size that the sellers can achieve. To achieve their goal of firm expansion, new online sellers should aggressively pursue opportunities in the short term, which is a reflection of the ā€œthe growth of the fitterā€ principle. Our findings also suggest that E-commerce platforms may attempt to facilitate the sustained growth path of sellers through including growth path analysis in the evaluation system of online stores

Background: Diabetic nephropathy is a major microvascular complication and the main cause of end-stage renal disease in diabetic patients. The therapeutic effects of Bailing capsules for diabetic nephropathy have already been demonstrated; however, the cost-effectiveness of Bailing capsules remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of Bailing capsules combined with Western medicine compared with Western medicine alone in diabetic nephropathy from a Chinese healthcare system perspective. Methods: A Markov model was established to simulate the disease process of patients over a 20-year period. Clinical efficacy data were obtained from a meta-analysis, and transition probability was estimated based on microsimulation. Direct costs and utility values were collected from the Chinese Drug Bidding Database (https://www.shuju.menet.com.cn) and published literature. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was measured, and one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were performed to observe model stability. Results: A total of 34 randomized controlled trials involving 3,444 patients with diabetic nephropathy were selected for the meta-analysis. Compared to Western medicine alone, the addition of Bailing capsules resulted in an increase of 0.39 quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) and additional costs of Chinese Yuan (CNY) 24,721, yielding an ICER of CNY 63,001 per QALY gained. The ICER was lower than the threshold of willingness-to-pay of CNY 80,976 (The GDP per Capita in China). The reliability and stability of the results were confirmed by the sensitivity analysis. Conclusion: We found that Bailing capsules may be a cost-effective treatment choice for patients with diabetic nephropathy in the Chinese population

A Comparative Study of Mouse Hepatic and Intestinal Gene Expression Profiles under PPARĪ± Knockout by Gene Set Enrichment Analysis

Gene expression profiling of PPARĪ± has been used in several studies, but fewer studies went further to identify the tissue-specific pathways or genes involved in PPARĪ± activation in genome-wide. Here, we employed and applied gene set enrichment analysis to two microarray datasets both PPARĪ± related respectively in mouse liver and intestine. We suggested that the regulatory mechanism of PPARĪ± activation by WY14643 in mouse small intestine is more complicated than in liver due to more involved pathways. Several pathways were cancer-related such as pancreatic cancer and small cell lung cancer, which indicated that PPARĪ± may have an important role in prevention of cancer development. 12 PPARĪ± dependent pathways and 4 PPARĪ± independent pathways were identified highly common in both liver and intestine of mice. Most of them were metabolism related, such as fatty acid metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, pyruvate metabolism with regard to PPARĪ± regulation but gluconeogenesis and propanoate metabolism independent of PPARĪ± regulation. Keratan sulfate biosynthesis, the pathway of regulation of actin cytoskeleton, the pathways associated with prostate cancer and small cell lung cancer were not identified as hepatic PPARĪ± independent but as WY14643 dependent ones in intestinal study. We also provided some novel hepatic tissue-specific marker genes

Needle Ī“13C and mobile carbohydrates in Pinus koraiensis in relation to decreased temperature and increased moisture along an elevational gradient in NE China

A tree's crown interacts with atmospheric variables such as CO2, temperature, and humidity. Physioecology of leaves/needles (e.g. Ī“13C, mobile carbohydrates, and nitrogen) is, therefore, strongly affected by microclimate in and surrounding a tree crown. To understand the physiological responses of leaves to changes in air temperature and moisture, we measured Ī“13C, soluble sugars, starch, and total nitrogen (N) concentrations in current year and 1-yr-old needles of Pinus koraiensis trees, and compared the growing season air temperature and relative humidity within and outside P. koraiensis crowns along an elevational gradient from 760 to 1,420ma.s.l. on Changbai Mountain, NE China. Our results indicated that needle N and mobile carbohydrates concentrations, as well as needle Ī“13C values changed continuously with increasing elevation, corresponding to a continuous decrease in air temperature and an increase in relative humidity. Needle carbon and nitrogen status is highly significantly negatively correlated with temperature, but positively correlated with relative humidity. These results indicate that increases in air temperature in combination with decreases in relative humidity may result in lower levels of N and mobile carbohydrates in P. koraiensis trees, suggesting that future climate changes such as global warming and changes in precipitation patterns will directly influence the N and carbon physiology at P. koraiensis individual level, and indirectly affect the competitive ability, species composition, productivity and functioning at the stand and ecosystem level in NE China. Due to the relatively limited range of the transect (760-1,420m) studied, further research is needed to explain whether the present results are applicable to scales across large elevational gradient

Integrated Management of Industrial and Municipal Wastewater in China. - Demonstration Project in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province

ƅrsliste 2000The city of Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province is a medium-size, rapidly expanding Chinese city located in a flat landscape with numerous canals. These are used for navigation, fishing, aquaculture and as drinking and industrial water source, but also as recipients for domestic and industrial wastewater and runoff from agriculture, paved roads and solid waste landfills in the area. The canals are severely polluted. NIVA has been assisting Jiaxing Environmental Protection Bureau (JEPB) in finding solutions to the local wastewater problems. The industry in the area discharges substantial quantities of potentially toxic wastewater to the sewer systems. There are, however, good possibilities for cleaner production routines in various factories. Several measures facilitate the transport of sewage to the nearby Hangzhou Bay, and sewage treatment processes before final disposal have been identified. The project has identified current and future wastewater production and recipient status. Based on pilot-plant operation and computer models a complete system for sewage collection and treatment has been suggested. This is based on transport of untreated sewage to Hanfzhou Bay where the construction of a sewage treatment plant is planned. The treatment methodology is based on a flexible chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT), followed by a biological step at a later stage. The project findings put emphasis on knowledge transfer and strengthening of JEPB resources to find solutions to the water-related problems in the city. In addition a detailed abatement plan should be developed, taking existing water quality, user interests and future water quality objectives into account.Direktoratet for Utviklingshjelp (NORAD

High-Pressure-Sintering-Induced Microstructural Engineering for an Ultimate Phonon Scattering of Thermoelectric Half-Heusler Compounds

    Get PDF
Thermal management is of vital importance in various modern technologies such as portable electronics, photovoltaics, and thermoelectric devices. Impeding phonon transport remains one of the most challenging tasks for improving the thermoelectric performance of certain materials such as half-Heusler compounds. Herein, a significant reduction of lattice thermal conductivity (ĪŗL) is achieved by applying a pressure of ā‰ˆ1 GPa to sinter a broad range of half-Heusler compounds. Contrasting with the common sintering pressure of less than 100 MPa, the gigapascal-level pressure enables densification at a lower temperature, thus greatly modifying the structural characteristics for an intensified phonon scattering. A maximum ĪŗL reduction of ā‰ˆ83% is realized for HfCoSb from 14 to 2.5 W māˆ’1 Kāˆ’1 at 300 K with more than 95% relative density. The realized low ĪŗL originates from a remarkable grain-size refinement to below 100 nm together with the abundant in-grain defects, as determined by microscopy investigations. This work uncovers the phonon transport properties of half-Heusler compounds under unconventional microstructures, thus showing the potential of high-pressure compaction in advancing the performance of thermoelectric materials

High expression of ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme 2C (UBE2C) correlates with nasopharyngeal carcinoma progression

BACKGROUND: Overexpression of ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme 2C (UBE2C) has been detected in many types of human cancers, and is correlated with tumor malignancy. However, the role of UBE2C in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of aberrant UBE2C expression in the progression of human NPC. METHODS: Immunohistochemical analysis was performed to detect UBE2C protein in clinical samples of NPC and benign nasopharyngeal tissues, and the association of UBE2C expression with patient clinicopathological characteristics was analyzed. UBEC2 expression profiles were evaluated in cell lines representing varying differentiated stages of NPC and immortalized nasopharyngeal epithelia NP-69 cells using quantitative RT-PCR, western blotting and fluorescent staining. Furthermore, UBE2C was knocked down using RNA interference in these cell lines and proliferation and cell cycle distribution was investigated. RESULTS: Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that UBE2C protein expression levels were higher in NPC tissues than in benign nasopharyngeal tissues (P<0.001). Moreover, high UBE2C protein expression was positively correlated with tumor size (P=0.017), lymph node metastasis (P=0.016) and distant metastasis (P=0.015) in NPC patients. In vitro experiments demonstrated that UBE2C expression levels were inversely correlated with the degree of differentiation of NPC cell lines, whereas UBE2C displayed low level of expression in NP-69 cells. Knockdown of UBE2C led to significant arrest at the S and G2/M phases of the cell cycle, and decreased cell proliferation was observed in poorly-differentiated CNE2Z NPC cells and undifferentiated C666-1 cells, but not in well-differentiated CNE1 and immortalized NP-69 cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that high expression of UBE2C in human NPC is closely related to tumor malignancy, and may be a potential marker for NPC progression
