    Determinants of health care costs in the senior elderly: age, comorbidity, impairment, or proximity to death?

    Ageing is assumed to be accompanied by greater health care expenditures but the association is also viewed as a ‘red herring’. This study aimed to evaluate whether age is associated with health care costs in the senior elderly, using electronic health records for 98,220 participants aged 80 years and over registered with the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink and linked Hospital Episode Statistics (2010–2014). Annual costs of health care utilization were estimated from a two-part model; multiple fractional polynomial models were employed to evaluate the non-linear association of age with predicted health care costs while also controlling for comorbidities, impairments, and death proximity. Annual health care costs increased from 80 years (£2972 in men, £2603 in women) to 97 (men; £4721) or 98 years (women; £3963), before declining. Costs were significantly elevated in the last year of life but this effect declined with age, from £10,027 in younger octogenarians to £7021 in centenarians. This decline was steeper in participants with comorbidities or impairments; £14,500 for 80–84-year-olds and £6752 for centenarians with 7+ impairments. At other times, comorbidity and impairments, not age, were main drivers of costs. We conclude that comorbidities, impairments, and proximity to death are key mediators of age-related increases in health care costs. While the costs of comorbidity among survivors are not generally associated with age, additional costs in the last year of life decline with age

    Superconducting properties of very high quality NbN thin films grown by high temperature chemical vapor deposition

    Niobium nitride (NbN) is widely used in high-frequency superconducting electronics circuits because it has one of the highest superconducting transition temperatures (TcT_c \sim 16.5 K) and largest gap among conventional superconductors. In its thin-film form, the TcT_c of NbN is very sensitive to growth conditions and it still remains a challenge to grow NbN thin film (below 50 nm) with high TcT_c. Here, we report on the superconducting properties of NbN thin films grown by high-temperature chemical vapor deposition (HTCVD). Transport measurements reveal significantly lower disorder than previously reported, characterized by a Ioffe-Regel (kFk_F\ell) parameter of \sim 14. Accordingly we observe TcT_c \sim 17.06 K (point of 50% of normal state resistance), the highest value reported so far for films of thickness below 50 nm, indicating that HTCVD could be particularly useful for growing high quality NbN thin films

    Boron availability in relation to some important soil chemical properties in acid soils of Cooch Behar district, West Bengal

    In the present study, we investigated the distribution of soil available boron and its relationship with some soil properties in the samples collected from different locations in acidic alluvial soils of Cooch Behar district in West Bengal during 2013-2014. For the study about two hundred fifty (250) georeferenced surface soil samples covering 11 blocks of the districts were collected with the help of a global positioning system (GPS). The soil results revealed that pH of the analyzed samples varied from 4.91-7.28 (mean value 5.68) which indicated that soils of the district were in the acidic to slightly acidic in reaction. Organic carbon content of the soils varied from 0.42 to 1.62 % with a mean value of 0.96 % and about 93.7 % of the samples were high whereas about 5.2 and 1.2 % of the samples analyzed were in medium and low category, respectively. Results also indicated that the available B content in the soils of the districts ranged from 0.04 to 3.87 mg kg-1 with a mean value of 0.51 mg kg-1 and about 38.26 % soil samples were classified under low, whereas, 3.58 and 0.35 % samples were categorized as medium and high in available B content. It was further indicated that the content of available B in soil was positively correlated with organic carbon (r = 0.170**) and negatively correlated with pH (r = -0.021). Organic carbon status was also found to be positively and non significantly correlated with soil pH (r = 0.062). The results of the study would be immensely helpful for the extension workers to recommended B application considering pH and organic carbon status in acidic soils of the district for a profitable crop production

    Influence of environment on growth and bulbing of onion (Allium cepa) under Gangetic alluvial plains of West Bengal

    The study was set up to investigate the influence of environment on the growth and bulbing of 14 varieties/ cultivars of onion under sub-tropical humid climatic condition of Gangetic alluvial plain of West Bengal. Bulbing in all the 14 varieties/cultivars at 11 hour photoperiod suggested that all the materials could be referred to as tropical and short day varieties/cultivars. Planting of 45 days old seedlings of the selected varieties like, Agrifound Dark Red, Baswant 780, Phule Safed and N-53 in the first week of October and harvesting the bulbs during last week of February has been found to be the best option for growing Early-Rabi onion having the projected bulb yield potential of 49-50 tonnes/ha in the agro-climatic condition of West Bengal with average day/night temperature of 21 to 22°C coupled with rainless condition and just above 11 hour photoperiod
