    Lunar igneous rocks and the nature of the lunar interior

    Lunar igneous rocks are interpreted, which can give useful information about mineral assemblages and mineral chemistry as a function of depth in the lunar interior. Terra rocks, though intensely brecciated, reveal, in their chemistry, evidence for a magmatic history. Partial melting of feldspathic lunar crustal material occurred in the interval 4.6 to 3.9 gy. Melting of ilmenite-bearing cumulates at depths near 100 km produced parent magmas for Apollo 11 and 17 titaniferous mare basalts in the interval 3.8 to 3.6 gy. Melting of ilmenite-free olivine pyroxenites at depths greater than 200 km produced low-titanium mare basalts in the interval 3.4 to 3.1 gy. No younger igneous rocks have yet been recognized among the lunar samples and present-day melting seems to be limited to depths greater than 1000 km

    A Numerical Treatment of Melt/Solid Segregation: Size of the Eucrite Parent Body and Stability of the Terrestrial Low-Velocity Zone

    Crystal sinking to form cumulates and melt percolation toward segregation in magma pools can be treated with modifications of Stokes' and Darcy's laws, respectively. The velocity of crystals and melt depends, among other things, on the force of gravity (g) driving the separations and the cooling time of the environment. The increase of g promotes more efficient differentiation, whereas the increase of cooling rate limits the extent to which crystals and liquid can separate. The rate at which separation occurs is strongly dependent on the proportion of liquid that is present. As a result, cumulate formation is a process with a negative feedback; the more densely aggregated the crystals become, the slower the process can proceed. In contrast, melt accumulation is a process with a positive feedback; partial accumulation of melt leads to more rapid accumulation of subsequent melt. This positive feedback can cause melt accumulation to run rapidly to completion once a critical stability limit is passed. The observation of cumulates and segregated melts among the eucrite meteorites is used as a basis for calculating the g (and planet size) required to perform these differentiations. The eucrite parent body was probably at least 10-100 km in radius. The earth's low velocity zone (LVZ) is shown to be unstable with respect to draining itself of excess melt if the melt forms an interconnecting network. A geologically persistent LVZ with a homogeneous distribution of melt can be maintained with melt fractions only on the order of 0.1% or less

    Melting experiments over the pressure range 0 to 20 kilobars were conducted on Apollo 14 igneous rocks 14310 and 14072 and on comprehensive fines 14259. The mineralogy and textures of rocks 14310 and 14072 are presumed to be the result of near-surface crystallization. The chemical compositions of the samples show special relationships to multiply-saturated liquids in the system: anorthite-forsterite-fayalite-silica at low pressure. Partial melting of a lunar crust consisting largely of plagioclase, low calcium pyroxene, and olivine, followed by crystal fractionation at the lunar surface is proposed as a mechanism for the production of the igneous rocks and soil glasses sampled by Apollo 14

    THE EFFECT OF EPITHELIAL REMNANT AND WHOLE ORGAN GRAFTS OF THYMUS ON THE RECOVERY OF THYMECTOMIZED IRRADIATED MICE

    Work has been presented which suggests that thymus epithelial reticular cells are not effective in restoring the microscopic morphology of lymphoid tissues and their immunologic capacities. They function in recruiting precursors of thymus lymphocytes from the host animals to produce an organ which, after it becomes architecturally normal, can reconstitute the defective host. Intact thymus grafts in situ from 10–14 days, but not for shorter periods of time, have been shown to result in a return toward normal of these two parameters. Evidence is offered to show that few dividing cellular components in the lymphoid tissue originate from the thymus remnant grafts, and that a minor cellular component is contributed by the intact grafts. These data support the concept that the structural and functional development of the lymphatic tissue in thymectomized animals is dependent on thymus lymphoid cells and/or their products, and that the epithelial-reticular cells do not have a direct action in peripheral lymphoid reconstitution

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EPITHELIAL RETICULAR CELL AND WHOLE ORGAN THYMUS GRAFTS IN NEONATALLY THYMECTOMIZED MICE

    Neonatally thymectomized mice were implanted with thymus grafts composed of epithelial reticular cells for periods of 7 and 14 days. Regardless of whether the grafts were placed immediately after thymectomy, or at 3 wk of age, there was little recovery of the lymphocyte depletion and impaired immunologic responsiveness, characteristically found in a neonatally thymectomized host. The findings were similar in animals studied at 2 months or 2 wk after graft removal. Many of the short-term remnant grafts were populated with lymphocytes and had attained the morphologic appearance of thymus by 14 days. A lesser degree of lymphocyte depletion and impaired responsiveness to SRBC occurred if thymectomy was delayed until 7 days of age, if remnant grafts were removed after 2 months, and if intact neonatal thymus was used for the short-term grafts. Complete normality was found in some of the animals in all of these groups. These observations suggest a direct role for mature thymus lymphocytes in reconstituting the neonatally thymectomized host and indicate that epithelial cell function is to direct the maturation of cells that ultimately behave as thymus lymphocytes

    Melting behavior and phase relations of lunar samples

    An attempt was made to show that feldspar would float during melting. Large anorthite crystals were placed beneath a silicate glass representative of liquid in which plagioclase accumulation is thought to have occurred. In less than 3 hours at 1,300 C, the crystals rose to the top in a Pt crucible 3 cm deep equilibrated in air and in a Mo crucible 1.5 cm deep equilibrated in an H2/CO2 gas stream of log PO2 = -10.9 (below Fe/FeO). These results suggest that lunar crustal formation by feldspar flotation is possible without special recourse to differential sinking of plagioclase versus mafic minerals or selective elutriation of plagioclase
