    Measuring Information Leakage in Website Fingerprinting Attacks and Defenses

    Tor provides low-latency anonymous and uncensored network access against a local or network adversary. Due to the design choice to minimize traffic overhead (and increase the pool of potential users) Tor allows some information about the client's connections to leak. Attacks using (features extracted from) this information to infer the website a user visits are called Website Fingerprinting (WF) attacks. We develop a methodology and tools to measure the amount of leaked information about a website. We apply this tool to a comprehensive set of features extracted from a large set of websites and WF defense mechanisms, allowing us to make more fine-grained observations about WF attacks and defenses.Comment: In Proceedings of the 2018 ACM SIGSAC Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CCS '18

    Effect of calcination method and clay purity on the performance of metakaolin-based geopolymers

    The calcination of kaolinite clay to produce metakaolin can be achieved using a range of processes, including rotary, fluidised bed and flash calcination. Rotary calcination was the most popular of these processes for many years as it takes place in a rotary kiln, which is readily available, at easily attainable temperatures of 650 – 800 °C. However, in recent years’ flash calcination processes have become more widely used, and the technology has advanced to a point where commercial flash metakaolin-based geopolymers are now available. Flash calcination involves the rapid heating of clay at temperatures of around 1000 °C for less than a few seconds. The differences in these calcination methods can have a notable effect on the structural ordering of the metakaolin itself, as well as playing an important role in defining the chemical and physical properties of metakaolin-based geopolymers. The purity of the clay also plays a key role in the chemistry of the geopolymers produced. Calcined clay-based geopolymers can be used as construction materials or for the immobilisation of problematic wastes, among other applications, as they can offer desirable performance characteristics. The chemical and physical properties of these geopolymers, and thus the influence of the clay source on key performance parameters, will need to be fully understood when deciding how they can be used for many different applications. This study demonstrates the effect of the calcination method on the properties of calcined metakaolin geopolymer systems for waste immobilisation applications. A main focus of this study is the rheological properties, as the flow properties of these systems are one of the most important parameters for many geopolymer applications. The porosity, heat evolution and mineralogical development of these systems is also presented, with a view towards assessing performance in targeted applications for the immobilisation of nuclear waste

    A Leptin-regulated Circuit Controls Glucose Mobilization During Noxious Stimuli

    Adipocytes secrete the hormone leptin to signal the sufficiency of energy stores. Reductions in circulating leptin concentrations reflect a negative energy balance, which augments sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation in response to metabolically demanding emergencies. This process ensures adequate glucose mobilization despite low energy stores. We report that leptin receptor–expressing neurons (LepRb neurons) in the periaqueductal gray (PAG), the largest population of LepRb neurons in the brain stem, mediate this process. Application of noxious stimuli, which often signal the need to mobilize glucose to support an appropriate response, activated PAG LepRb neurons, which project to and activate parabrachial nucleus (PBN) neurons that control SNS activation and glucose mobilization. Furthermore, activating PAG LepRb neurons increased SNS activity and blood glucose concentrations, while ablating LepRb in PAG neurons augmented glucose mobilization in response to noxious stimuli. Thus, decreased leptin action on PAG LepRb neurons augments the autonomic response to noxious stimuli, ensuring sufficient glucose mobilization during periods of acute demand in the face of diminished energy stores

    HST morphologies of local Lyman break galaxy analogs I: Evidence for starbursts triggered by merging

    Heckman et al. (2005) used the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV imaging survey to show that there exists a rare population of nearby compact UV-luminous galaxies (UVLGs) that closely resembles high redshift Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). We present HST images in the UV, optical, and Ha, and resimulate them at the depth and resolution of the GOODS/UDF fields to show that the morphologies of UVLGs are also similar to those of LBGs. Our sample of 8 LBG analogs thus provides detailed insight into the connection between star formation and LBG morphology. Faint tidal features or companions can be seen in all of the rest-frame optical images, suggesting that the starbursts are the result of a merger or interaction. The UV/optical light is dominated by unresolved (~100-300 pc) super starburst regions (SSBs). A detailed comparison with the galaxies Haro 11 and VV 114 at z=0.02 indicates that the SSBs themselves consist of diffuse stars and (super) star clusters. The structural features revealed by the new HST images occur on very small physical scales and are thus not detectable in images of high redshift LBGs, except in a few cases where they are magnified by gravitational lensing. We propose, therefore, that LBGs are mergers of gas-rich, relatively low-mass (~10^10 Msun) systems, and that the mergers trigger the formation of SSBs. If galaxies at high redshifts are dominated by SSBs, then the faint end slope of the luminosity function is predicted to have slope alpha~2.     Do sex hormones confound or mediate the effect of chronotype on breast and prostate cancer? A Mendelian randomization study

    Morning-preference chronotype has been found to be protective against breast and prostate cancer. Sex hormones have been implicated in relation to chronotype and the development of both cancers. This study aimed to assess whether sex hormones confound or mediate the effect of chronotype on breast and prostate cancer using a Mendelian Randomization (MR) framework. Genetic variants associated with chronotype and sex hormones (total testosterone, bioavailable testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin, and oestradiol) (p<5×10-8) were obtained from published genome-wide association studies (n≀244,207 females and n≀205,527 males). These variants were used to investigate causal relationships with breast (nCases/nControls = 133,384/113,789) and prostate (nCases/nControls = 79,148/61,106) cancer using univariable, bidirectional and multivariable MR. In females, we found evidence for: I) Reduced risk of breast cancer per category increase in morning-preference (OR = 0.93, 95% CI:0. 88, 1.00); II) Increased risk of breast cancer per SD increase in bioavailable testosterone (OR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.19) and total testosterone (OR = 1.15, 95% CI:1.07, 1.23); III) Bidirectional effects between morning-preference and both bioavailable and total testosterone (e.g. mean SD difference in bioavailable testosterone = -0.08, 95% CI:-0.12, -0.05 per category increase in morning-preference vs difference in morning-preference category = -0.04, 95% CI: -0.08, 0.00 per SD increase in bioavailable testosterone). In males, we found evidence for: I) Reduced risk of prostate cancer per category increase in morning-preference (OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.83, 0.97) and II) Increased risk of prostate cancer per SD increase in bioavailable testosterone (OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.08, 1.37). No bidirectional effects were found between morning-preference and testosterone in males. While testosterone levels were causally implicated with both chronotype and cancer, there was inconsistent evidence for testosterone as a mediator of the relationship. The protective effect of morning-preference on both breast and prostate cancer is clinically interesting, although it may be difficult to effectively modify chronotype. Further studies are needed to investigate other potentially modifiable intermediates

    Flexible high aspect ratio wing: Low cost experimental model and computational framework

    Aircraft concepts of tomorrow, such as high aspect ratio wing aircraft, are far more integrated between technical disciplines and thus require multidisciplinary design approaches. Design tools able to predict associated dynamics need to be developed if such wing concepts are to be matured for use on future transport aircraft. The Cranfield University Beam Reduction and Dynamic Scaling ( BeaRDS) Programme provides a framework that scales a conceptual full size aircraft to a cantilevered wing model of wind tunnel dimensions, such that there is similitude between the static and dynamic behaviour of the model and the full size aircraft. This process of aeroelastically scaled testing combines the technical disciplines of aerodynamics, flight mechanics and structural dynamics, to provide a means by which future concept aircraft can be de-risked and explored . Data acquisition from wind tunnel testing can then be used to validate fluid-structure interaction frameworks that model the aeroelastic effect on the flight dynamics of the aircraft. This paper provides an overview of the BeaRDS methodology, and focuses on the Phase I of the programme, being the development of a reduced Cranfield A-13 aircraft cantilevered wing, to mitigate risk associated with the manufacturing and instrumentation app roach. It is shown that a low cost acquisition system of commercial Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) can measure the response of the wing within the desired frequency range. Issues associated with the Phase I testing are discussed, and methods are proposed for the Phase II programme that allow these problems to be resolved for a larger scale flexible wing with active control surfaces
