Bright Giant Pulses from the Crab Nebula Pulsar: Statistical Properties, Pulse Broadening and Scattering due to the Nebula
We report observations of Crab giant pulses made with the Australia Telescope
Compact Array and a baseband recorder system, made simultaneously at two
frequencies, 1300 and 1470 MHz. These observations were sensitive to pulses
with amplitudes \ga 3 kJy and widths \ga 0.5 s. Our analysis led to the
detection of more than 700 such bright giant pulses over 3 hours, and using
this large sample we investigate their amplitude, width, arrival time and
energy distributions. The brightest pulse detected in our data has a peak
amplitude of 45 kJy and a width of 0.5 s, and therefore an
inferred brightness temperature of K. The duration of
giant-pulse emission is typically 1 s, however it can also be as
long as 10 s. The pulse shape at a high time resolution (128 ns) shows
rich diversity and complexity in structure and is marked by an unusually low
degree of scattering. We discuss possible implications for scattering due to

Examining the Ethical Environment in Higher Education
Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the world have found themselves faced with new challenges on issues of ethics. Much of this has been centred on issues of assessment: plagiarism, buying essays, sharing/lending of previously passed work and the stealing of marked/returned work of others. Institutions still treat academic misconduct as largely a behavioural difficulty rather than an issue of ethics (or education), suggesting that academia places a far greater emphasis on combating new forms of dishonesty than it does on encouraging ethical habits and a healthy ethical environment. To date, the majority of research in this area has examined these forms of academic misconduct from the point of view of the student and/or the university, with the perspective of academics receiving very limited attention. Our hypothesis is that academics are perhaps best placed to provide the education needed to create and sustain an ethical environment, and we argue that being ‘ethically aware’ is a critical factor in the development of academic competence for all parties. This study adds to existing research in three ways: firstly, by highlighting the importance of an overall framework for an ethical environment within HEIs; secondly, by suggesting an ecological model of key parties (the university, students and academics) with responsibility for this environment in assessment; and thirdly, by including new evidence (generated by a survey of academics) to extend our understanding of their views on these issues
Detection of Crab Giant Pulses Using the Mileura Widefield Array Low Frequency Demonstrator Field Prototype System
We report on the detection of giant pulses from the Crab Nebula pulsar at a
frequency of 200 MHz using the field deployment system designed for the Mileura
Widefield Array's Low Frequency Demonstrator (MWA-LFD). Our observations are
among the first high-quality detections at such low frequencies. The measured
pulse shapes are deconvolved for interstellar pulse broadening, yielding a
pulse-broadening time of 670100 s, and the implied strength of
scattering (scattering measure) is the lowest that is estimated towards the
Crab nebula from observations made so far. The sensitivity of the system is
largely dictated by the sky background, and our simple equipment is capable of
detecting pulses that are brighter than 9 kJy in amplitude. The brightest
giant pulse detected in our data has a peak amplitude of 50 kJy, and the
implied brightness temperature is K. We discuss the giant pulse
detection prospects with the full MWA-LFD system. With a sensitivity over two
orders of magnitude larger than the prototype equipment, the full system will
be capable of detecting such bright giant pulses out to a wide range of
Galactic distances; from 8 to 30 kpc depending on the frequency.
The MWA-LFD will thus be a highly promising instrument for the studies of giant

Shift invariant preduals of ℓ<sub>1</sub>(ℤ)
The Banach space ℓ<sub>1</sub>(ℤ) admits many non-isomorphic preduals, for
example, C(K) for any compact countable space K, along with many more
exotic Banach spaces. In this paper, we impose an extra condition: the predual
must make the bilateral shift on ℓ<sub>1</sub>(ℤ) weak<sup>*</sup>-continuous. This is
equivalent to making the natural convolution multiplication on ℓ<sub>1</sub>(ℤ)
separately weak*-continuous and so turning ℓ<sub>1</sub>(ℤ) into a dual Banach
algebra. We call such preduals <i>shift-invariant</i>. It is known that the
only shift-invariant predual arising from the standard duality between C<sub>0</sub>(K)
(for countable locally compact K) and ℓ<sub>1</sub>(ℤ) is c<sub>0</sub>(ℤ). We provide
an explicit construction of an uncountable family of distinct preduals which do
make the bilateral shift weak<sup>*</sup>-continuous. Using Szlenk index arguments, we
show that merely as Banach spaces, these are all isomorphic to c<sub>0</sub>. We then
build some theory to study such preduals, showing that they arise from certain
semigroup compactifications of ℤ. This allows us to produce a large number
of other examples, including non-isometric preduals, and preduals which are not
Banach space isomorphic to c<sub>0</sub>
18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-positive sarcoidosis after chemoradiotherapy for Hodgkin’s disease: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>The occurrence of granulomatous disease in the setting of Hodgkin's disease is rare; however, when it occurs it can pose significant clinical and diagnostic challenges for physicians treating these patients.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 33-year-old Caucasian woman of Mediterranean descent with newly diagnosed <sup>18</sup>F-fluorodeoxyglucose (<sup>18</sup>F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scan-positive, early-stage Hodgkin's disease involving the cervical nodes who, despite having an excellent clinical response to chemotherapy, had a persistent <sup>18</sup>F-FDG PET scan-positive study, which was suggestive of residual or progressive disease. A subsequent biopsy of her post-chemotherapy PET-positive nodes demonstrated sarcoidosis with no evidence of Hodgkin's disease.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This case highlights the fact that abnormalities observed on posttherapy PET/CT scans in patients with Hodgkin's disease are not always due to residual or progressive disease. An association between Hodgkin's disease and/or its treatment with an increased incidence of granulomatous disease appears to exist. Certain patterns of <sup>18</sup>F-FDG uptake observed on PET/CT scans may suggest other pathologies, such as granulomatous inflammation, and because of the significant differences in prognosis and management, clinicians should maintain a low threshold of confidence for basing their diagnosis on histopathological evaluations when PET/CT results appear to be incongruent with the patient's clinical response.</p
The MacGyver effect: alive and well in health services research?
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In a manner similar to the television action hero MacGyver, health services researchers need to respond to the pressure of unpredictable demands and constrained time frames. The results are often both innovative and functional, with the creation of outputs that could not have been anticipated in the initial planning and design of the research.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>In the conduct of health services research many challenges to robust research processes are generated as a result of the interface between academic research, health policy and implementation agendas. Within a complex and rapidly evolving environment the task of the health services researcher is, therefore, to juggle sometimes contradictory pressures to produce valid results.</p> <p>Summary</p> <p>This paper identifies the MacGyver-type dilemmas which arise in health services research, wherein innovation may be called for, to maintain the intended scientific method and rigour. These 'MacGyver drivers' are framed as opposing issues from the perspective of both academic and public policy communities. The ideas expressed in this paper are illustrated by four examples from research projects positioned at the interface between public policy strategy and academia.</p
Immune-mediated competition in rodent malaria is most likely caused by induced changes in innate immune clearance of merozoites
Malarial infections are often genetically diverse, leading to competitive interactions between parasites. A quantitative understanding of the competition between strains is essential to understand a wide range of issues, including the evolution of virulence and drug resistance. In this study, we use dynamical-model based Bayesian inference to investigate the cause of competitive suppression of an avirulent clone of Plasmodium chabaudi (AS) by a virulent clone (AJ) in immuno-deficient and competent mice. We test whether competitive suppression is caused by clone-specific differences in one or more of the following processes: adaptive immune clearance of merozoites and parasitised red blood cells (RBCs), background loss of merozoites and parasitised RBCs, RBC age preference, RBC infection rate, burst size, and within-RBC interference. These processes were parameterised in dynamical mathematical models and fitted to experimental data. We found that just one parameter μ, the ratio of background loss rate of merozoites to invasion rate of mature RBCs, needed to be clone-specific to predict the data. Interestingly, μ was found to be the same for both clones in single-clone infections, but different between the clones in mixed infections. The size of this difference was largest in immuno-competent mice and smallest in immuno-deficient mice. This explains why competitive suppression was alleviated in immuno-deficient mice. We found that competitive suppression acts early in infection, even before the day of peak parasitaemia. These results lead us to argue that the innate immune response clearing merozoites is the most likely, but not necessarily the only, mediator of competitive interactions between virulent and avirulent clones. Moreover, in mixed infections we predict there to be an interaction between the clones and the innate immune response which induces changes in the strength of its clearance of merozoites. What this interaction is unknown, but future refinement of the model, challenged with other datasets, may lead to its discovery

Tandem quadruplication of HMA4 in the zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulator noccaea caerulescens
Zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulation may have evolved twice in the Brassicaceae, in Arabidopsis halleri and in the Noccaea genus. Tandem gene duplication and deregulated expression of the Zn transporter, HMA4, has previously been linked to Zn/Cd hyperaccumulation in A. halleri. Here, we tested the hypothesis that tandem duplication and deregulation of HMA4 expression also occurs in Noccaea. A Noccaea caerulescens genomic library was generated, containing 36,864 fosmid pCC1FOSTM clones with insert sizes ~20–40 kbp, and screened with a PCR-generated HMA4 genomic probe. Gene copy number within the genome was estimated through DNA fingerprinting and pooled fosmid pyrosequencing. Gene copy numbers within individual clones was determined by PCR analyses with novel locus specific primers. Entire fosmids were then sequenced individually and reads equivalent to 20-fold coverage were assembled to generate complete whole contigs. Four tandem HMA4 repeats were identified in a contiguous sequence of 101,480 bp based on sequence overlap identities. These were flanked by regions syntenous with up and downstream regions of AtHMA4 in Arabidopsis thaliana. Promoter-reporter b-glucuronidase (GUS) fusion analysis of a NcHMA4 in A. thaliana revealed deregulated expression in roots and shoots, analogous to AhHMA4 promoters, but distinct from AtHMA4 expression which localised to the root vascular tissue. This remarkable consistency in tandem duplication and deregulated expression of metal transport genes between N. caerulescens and A. halleri, which last shared a common ancestor >40 mya, provides intriguing evidence that parallel evolutionary pathways may underlie Zn/Cd hyperaccumulation in Brassicaceae
