Study on nutrient supply in relation to feeding system of buffalo in Chitwan, Nepal

Livestock farming in Nepal, especially buffalo farming alone contributes a major share in livelihoods of farmers. Stall feeding of buffalo is common in Chitwan with occasional grazing. This raises questions about status of nutrients supplied to maintain productivity as feed resources varied in forest and crop land according to the season. A study was carried out in Chitwan from April 2015 to March 2016 to find out the status of nutrient supply in relation to the feeding system of buffalo. Total fifteen farms were selected from three villages, the amount of feedstuff fed to the animals was measured every month and the nutrient contents of the feed were analyzed. The mean concentrations of DM, CP, TDN, Ca and P were 641g/kg, 75.0 g/kg, 462 g/kg, 4.9 g/kg and 4.2 g/kg. A significant difference of CP contents among the villages was observed (72.0 g/kg, 70.7 g/kg and 81.2 g/kg (P<0.01), and the highest content of CP, TDN, Ca and P were found in July (P<0.05)). The study showed variation in nutrient supplied, irrespective of the status and condition of buffalo in the farms which need to be considered to maintain productivity of the animals

Physical conditions of the interstellar medium in star-forming galaxies at z~1.5

We present results from Subaru/FMOS near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy of 118 star-forming galaxies at z1.5z\sim1.5 in the Subaru Deep Field. These galaxies are selected as [OII]λ\lambda3727 emitters at zz\approx 1.47 and 1.62 from narrow-band imaging. We detect Hα\alpha emission line in 115 galaxies, [OIII]λ\lambda5007 emission line in 45 galaxies, and Hβ\beta, [NII]λ\lambda6584, and [SII]λλ\lambda\lambda6716,6731 in 13, 16, and 6 galaxies, respectively. Including the [OII] emission line, we use the six strong nebular emission lines in the individual and composite rest-frame optical spectra to investigate physical conditions of the interstellar medium in star-forming galaxies at zz\sim1.5. We find a tight correlation between Hα\alpha and [OII], which suggests that [OII] can be a good star formation rate (SFR) indicator for galaxies at z1.5z\sim1.5. The line ratios of Hα\alpha/[OII] are consistent with those of local galaxies. We also find that [OII] emitters have strong [OIII] emission lines. The [OIII]/[OII] ratios are larger than normal star-forming galaxies in the local Universe, suggesting a higher ionization parameter. Less massive galaxies have larger [OIII]/[OII] ratios. With evidence that the electron density is consistent with local galaxies, the high ionization of galaxies at high redshifts may be attributed to a harder radiation field by a young stellar population and/or an increase in the number of ionizing photons from each massive star.Comment: Fixed a minor issue with LaTeX table numberin

Characteristics of Cryopreserved Spermatozoa from a Holstein-Friesian Bull Thawed at Different Temperature <Research Notes>

The present study was undertaken to examine the viability, motility and morphology of spermatozoa that were frozen-thawed at different temperature followed by the storage at 4ºC until 10 hours under the condition of tropical area. The frozen semen derived from a Holstein-Friesian bull with the egg-yolkbase extender was thawed at 23ºC or 37ºC for 30 seconds or 15 seconds, respectively, and kept at 4ºC. Viability, motility and damage of acrosomal cap in sperm were assessed every 2 hours after thawing. The sperm viability just after the refrigeration at 4ºC was not different between the groups. Besides, only 5% difference was found in the viability between the groups from 2 to 10 hours after thawing. On the other hand, the sperm had a fast progressive movement until 6 hours post-thawing. Only 2% or less sperms showed the damage of acrosomal cap in both groups. This value did not rise with keeping the semen at 4ºC until 10 hours in both groups. In conclusion, the thawing at 23ºC for 30 seconds does not have detrimental effects on the viability, motility, and morphological change of sperm. This suggests that the semen thawed at 23ºC can keep the quality at 4ºC for 6 hours

Studies on Location Technique of Corona and Measurement of Space Charge in Transformer Oil

An investigation has been made in order to develop the location technique of corona discharge in insulating oil, on behalf of the development of the UHV transformer. This paper describes the principle of analysing the corona location by making use of electrostatic probes. The corona produces a space charge in the oil, and induces charges on the probes electrostatically. Thus, the location as well as the space charge quantity of the corona can be analyzed, based on the induced charges of the probes. For this investigation, a needle-plane electrode and four probes were arranged in the oil, and a lightning impulse voltage was applied to the gap. Then, the corona produced in the gap was investigated by measuring the corona current and the induced charges on the probes, and then taking photographs of the corona. From these experiments, it was proved that this technique was quite useful for analyzing the location of the corona
