    M Dwarfs from Hubble Space Telescope Star Counts. IV

    We study a sample of about 1400 disk M dwarfs that are found in 148 fields observed with the Wide Field Camera 2 (WFC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope and 162 fields observed with pre-repair Planetary Camera 1 (PC1), of which 95 of the WFC2 fields are newly analyzed. The method of maximum likelihood is applied to derive the luminosity function and the Galactic disk parameters. At first, we use a local color-magnitude relation and a locally determined mass-luminosity relation in our analysis. The results are consistent with those of previous work but with considerably reduced statistical errors. These small statistical errors motivate us to investigate the systematic uncertainties. Considering the metallicity gradient above the Galactic plane, we introduce a modified color-magnitude relation that is a function of Galactic height. The resultant M dwarf luminosity function has a shape similar to that derived using the local color-magnitude relation but with a higher peak value. The peak occurs at MV∌12M_V \sim 12 and the luminosity function drops sharply toward MV∌14M_V \sim 14. We then apply a height-dependent mass-luminosity function interpolated from theoretical models with different metallicities to calculate the mass function. Unlike the mass function obtained using local relations, which has a power-law index α=0.47\alpha = 0.47, the one derived from the height-dependent relations tends to be flat (α=−0.10\alpha = -0.10). The resultant local surface density of disk M dwarfs (12.2 +/- 1.6 M_sun pc^{-2}) is somewhat smaller than the one obtained using local relations (14.3 +/- 1.3 M_sun pc^{-2}).     On the relationship between sigma models and spin chains

    We consider the two-dimensional O(3)\rm O(3) non-linear sigma model with topological term using a lattice regularization introduced by Shankar and Read [Nucl.Phys. B336 (1990), 457], that is suitable for studying the strong coupling regime. When this lattice model is quantized, the coefficient Ξ\theta of the topological term is quantized as Ξ=2πs\theta=2\pi s, with ss integer or half-integer. We study in detail the relationship between the low energy behaviour of this theory and the one-dimensional spin-ss Heisenberg model.     Lifestyle interventions and prevention of suicide

    Over the past years, there has been a growing interest in the association between lifestyle psychosocial interventions, severe mental illness, and suicide risk. Patients with severe mental disorders have higher mortality rates, poor health states, and higher suicide risk compared to the general population. Lifestyle behaviors are amenable to change through the adoption of specific psychosocial interventions, and several approaches have been promoted. The current article provides a comprehensive review of the literature on lifestyle interventions, mental health, and suicide risk in the general population and in patients with psychiatric disorders. For this purpose, we investigated lifestyle behaviors and lifestyle interventions in three different age groups: adolescents, young adults, and the elderly. Several lifestyle behaviors including cigarette smoking, alcohol use, and sedentary lifestyle are associated with suicide risk in all age groups. In adolescents, growing attention has emerged on the association between suicide risk and internet addiction, cyberbullying and scholastic and family difficulties. In adults, psychiatric symptoms, substance and alcohol abuse, weight, and occupational difficulties seems to have a significant role in suicide risk. Finally, in the elderly, the presence of an organic disease and poor social support are associated with an increased risk of suicide attempt. Several factors may explain the association between lifestyle behaviors and suicide. First, many studies have reported that some lifestyle behaviors and its consequences (sedentary lifestyle, cigarette smoking underweight, obesity) are associated with cardiometabolic risk factors and with poor mental health. Second, several lifestyle behaviors may encourage social isolation, limiting the development of social networks, and remove individuals from social interactions; increasing their risk of mental health problems and suicide

    The role of demoralization and hopelessness in suicide risk in schizophrenia: a review of the literature

    Background and Objectives: Demoralization has been defined by hopelessness and helplessness attributable to a loss of purpose and meaning in life. Demoralization is a meaningful mental health concern, frequently associated with suicide risk in medical and psychiatric patients. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize the recent empirical evidence on demoralization in patients with schizophrenia and to better understand the relationship between demoralization and suicide risk in patients with schizophrenia. Methods: A comprehensive literature search using key words and subject headings was performed following PRISMA guidelines with several bibliographic databases, resulting in the identification of 27 studies. Results: The findings suggested that demoralization is prevalent in patients with schizophrenia and supported the hypothesis that the association between depression and suicide is moderated by hopelessness. In clinical practice, it is important to recognize symptoms of demoralization using appropriate psychological tools to better understand the suffering of patients with schizophrenia and to implement suicide prevention programs

    Ultracompact monolithic integration of balanced, polarization diversity photodetectors for coherent lightwave receivers

    The authors have monolithically integrated an optical front-end on InP for balanced, polarization-diversity coherent lightwave reception which is only 1.3-mm long. Low on-chip insertion loss (<4.5 dB) and balanced photoresponse (1.05:1 or better) are achieved at 1.5-ÎŒm wavelength using straightforward, regrowth-free fabrication. Low-capacitance photodetectors (≀0.15 pF) are employed for high bandwidth operation

    Photometric Monitoring of the Gravitationally Lensed Ultraluminous BAL Quasar APM08279+5255

    We report on one year of photometric monitoring of the ultraluminous BAL quasar APM 08279+5255. The temporal sampling reveals that this gravitationally lensed system has brightened by ~0.2 mag in 100 days. Two potential causes present themselves; either the variability is intrinsic to the quasar, or it is the result of microlensing by stars in a foreground system. The data is consistent with both hypotheses and further monitoring is required before either case can be conclusively confirmed. We demonstrate, however, that gravitational microlensing can not play a dominant role in explaining the phenomenal properties exhibited by APM 08279+5255. The identification of intrinsic variability, coupled with the simple gravitational lensing configuration, would suggest that APM 08279+5255 is a potential golden lens from which the cosmological parameters can be derived and is worthy of a monitoring program at high spatial resolution.Comment: 17 pages, with 2 figures.     An Application of Kerr Blackhole Fly-Wheel Model to Statistical Properties of QSOs/AGNs

    The aim of this work is to demonstrate the properties of the magnetospheric model around Kerr blackholes (BHs), so-called the fly-wheel (rotation driven) model. The fly-wheel engine of the BH-accretion disk system is applied to the statistics of QSOs/AGNs. In the model, the central BH is assumed to be formed at z∌102z \sim 10^2 and obtains nearly maximum but finite rotation energy (∌\sim extreme Kerr BH) at the formation stage. The inherently obtained rotation energy of the Kerr BH is released through an magnetohydrodynamic process. This model naturally leads finite lifetime of AGN activity. Nitta et al. (1991) clarified individual evolution of Kerr BH fly-wheel engine which is parametrized by BH mass, initial Kerr parameter, magnetic field near the horizon and a dimension-less small parameter. We impose a statistical model for the initial mass function (IMF) of ensemble of BHs by the Press-Schechter formalism.     Quasar Spectral Slope Variability in the Optical Band

    We performed a new analysis of B and R light curves of a sample of PG quasars. We confirm the variability-redshift correlation and its explanation in terms of spectral variability, coupled with the increase of rest-frame observing frequency for quasars at high redshift. The analysis of the instantaneous spectral slope for the whole quasar samples indicates both an inter-QSO and intra-QSO variability-luminosity correlation. Numerical simulations show that the latter correlation cannot be entirely due to the addition of the host galaxy emission to a nuclear spectrum of variable luminosity but constant shape, implying a spectral variability of the nuclear component. Changes of accretion rate are also insufficient to explain the amount of spectral variation, while hot spots possibly caused by local disk instabilities can explain the observations.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Ap.J., January 200

    Recombination via transition metals in solar silicon : the significance of hydrogen-metal reactions and lattice sites of metal atoms

    The move towards lower cost sources of solar silicon has intensified efforts to investigate the possibilities of passivating or reducing the recombination activity caused by deep states associated with transition metals. This is particularly important for the case of the slow diffusing metals early in the periodic sequence which are not removed by conventional gettering. In this paper we examine reactions between hydrogen and transition metals and discuss the possibility of such reactions during cell processing. We analyse the case of hydrogenation of iron in p-type Si and show that FeH can form under non-equilibrium conditions. We consider the electrical activity of the slow diffusing metals Ti, V and Mo, how this is affected in the presence of hydrogen, and the stability of TM-H complexes formed. Finally we discuss recent experiments which indicate that resiting of some transition metals from the interstitial to substitutional site is possible in the presence of excess vacancies, leading to a reduction in recombination activity

After giving an overview of cell motility mechanisms we review what is currently known about the mechanical properties of the nucleus and the connections between it and the cytoskeleton. We also discuss connections to the extracellular matrix and mechanotransduction. We identify key physical roles of the nucleus in cell migration
