Through his collection of sermons, published in his book Strength for the Journey: Biblical Wisdom for Daily Living (HarperCollins Publishers, 2003), Peter Gomes sets out to evoke a transformation in the reader by offering meditations on questions that often arise when we contemplate how to lead the good life . He offers biblical wisdom as a practical means in which to achieve happiness. Ultimately however, his solution to life\u27s complexities is abstract and he fails to provide a roadmap with which to negotiate the complexities

EuroBarley:control of leaf diseases in barley across Europe

Barley crops are at risk of being attacked by several leaf diseases. Net blotch, brown rust, Rhynchosporium and Ramularia leaf spot are among the most widespread and can cause severe attack and yield losses. Two trial protocols targeting Ramularia and net blotch, respectively, have been tested in several countries in 2021 and 2022. Ramularia trials were situated in Germany, Ireland, Scotland, and Denmark. The net blotch trials were placed in Denmark, Belgium, the UK, Germany, Finland, and France. In the two protocols, 12–13 different fungicide solutions including co-formulations of DMIs, SDHIs, QoIs, and multi-site inhibitors have been tested to compare efficacy and yield responses. Against Ramularia leaf spot, the fungicides were applied at GS 47–51 and against net blotch at GS 37–45. In six trials, the efficacy against Ramularia leaf spot was scored. The results showed a superior control from the co-formulation fluxapyroxad + metyltetraprole (78–100% control), but also solo mefentrifluconazole and the mixtures fluxapyroxad + mefentrifluconazole performed well (average 74–76% control). The mixture fluxapyroxad + metyltetraprole provided the best yield increase followed by Ascra Xpro. Folpet as a solo solution was inferior. Following the net blotch protocol, only three trials developed enough disease to rank the different fungicides; however, in five trials ranking against brown rust was also possible. Most treatments gave very good control of net blotch, and brown rust (> 80% control). The mixture fluxapyroxad + metyltetraprole delivered the best control against all diseases overall. Average yield responses from eight trials showed very similar increases from the tested fungicides.</p

The practical role of induced resistance for crop protection

Plants have evolved a highly sophisticated immune system to resist pathogen attack comprising both preformed and inducible mechanisms. Over the last 50 years, various biological and chemical inducers have been used to artificially trigger the defense response in plants, thereby promoting an induced resistance (IR) to subsequent pathogen attack. IR has proven effective for disease control in laboratory and glasshouse conditions but has seldom equalled the level of protection offered by synthetic pesticides in the field. However, renewed interest in IR for crop protection is being driven by legislation to reduce the use of synthetic chemicals in agriculture. Inducers can contribute to integrated crop management strategies when used in combination with fungicides, bactericides, and with other biological control options. Integrating inducers in this way can reduce chemical inputs without loss of efficacy. Moreover, advances in our understanding of plant defense are informing the development of new inducers and guiding new strategies for their implementation in sustainable crop protection. This review will discuss the use of IR in selected cropping systems and describe opportunities for optimizing its potential, including the development of more effective inducers and their integration with conventional and cultural control options

Sharia banking is currently on the rise and has become a reference for people to invest their funds for various needs. For this reason, various sharia banking products must be able to be understood by the public, one of which is the application of the mudharabah contract to savings products. This article discusses the application of the Mudharabah contract to savings products at PT. Bank Syariah Mandiri KC. Prabumulih. This article uses qualitative research by collecting data through direct interviews with stakeholders at Bank Syariah Mandiri Prabumulih Branch. The results of this study are the implementation of the contract used in planning savings is the mudharabah muthlaqah contract, which is a form of cooperation between shahibul maal (fund owner), namely the customer and mudharib (fund manager), namely the bank, where the owner of the fund (shahibul maal) does not impose limits on the mudharib in determine the type of business, time and area of business as long as it does not conflict with sharia principles and is in accordance with bank regulations
