    On the Spectrum and Nature of the Peculiar Type Ia Supernova 1991T

    A parameterized supernova synthetic-spectrum code is used to study line identifications in the photospheric-phase spectra of the peculiar Type Ia SN 1991T, and to extract some constraints on the composition structure of the ejected matter. The inferred composition structure is not like that of any hydrodynamical model for Type Ia supernovae. Evidence that SN 1991T was overluminous for an SN Ia is presented, and it is suggested that this peculiar event probably was a substantially super-Chandrasekhar explosion that resulted from the merger of two white dwarfs.Comment: 1 text, 7 figures, submitted to MNRA

    Non-hermitean delocalization in an array of wells with variable-range widths

    Nonhermitean hamiltonians of convection-diffusion type occur in the description of vortex motion in the presence of a tilted magnetic field as well as in models of driven population dynamics. We study such hamiltonians in the case of rectangular barriers of variable size. We determine Lyapunov exponent and wavenumber of the eigenfunctions within an adiabatic approach, allowing to reduce the original d=2 phase space to a d=1 attractor.     Specialized mouse embryonic stem cells for studying vascular development.

    Vascular progenitor cells are desirable in a variety of therapeutic strategies; however, the lineage commitment of endothelial and smooth muscle cell from a common progenitor is not well-understood. Here, we report the generation of the first dual reporter mouse embryonic stem cell (mESC) lines designed to facilitate the study of vascular endothelial and smooth muscle development in vitro. These mESC lines express green fluorescent protein (GFP) under the endothelial promoter, Tie-2, and Discomsoma sp. red fluorescent protein (RFP) under the promoter for alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). The lines were then characterized for morphology, marker expression, and pluripotency. The mESC colonies were found to exhibit dome-shaped morphology, alkaline phosphotase activity, as well as expression of Oct 3/4 and stage-specific embryonic antigen-1. The mESC colonies were also found to display normal karyotypes and are able to generate cells from all three germ layers, verifying pluripotency. Tissue staining confirmed the coexpression of VE (vascular endothelial)-cadherin with the Tie-2 GFP+ expression on endothelial structures and smooth muscle myosin heavy chain with the α-SMA RFP+ smooth muscle cells. Lastly, it was verified that the developing mESC do express Tie-2 GFP+ and α-SMA RFP+ cells during differentiation and that the GFP+ cells colocalize with the vascular-like structures surrounded by α-SMA-RFP cells. These dual reporter vascular-specific mESC permit visualization and cell tracking of individual endothelial and smooth muscle cells over time and in multiple dimensions, a powerful new tool for studying vascular development in real time

    Vortices in a cylinder: Localization after depinning

    Edge effects in the depinned phase of flux lines in hollow superconducting cylinder with columnar defects and electric current along the cylinder are investigated. Far from the ends of the cylinder vortices are distributed almost uniformly (delocalized). Nevertheless, near the edges these free vortices come closer together and form well resolved dense bunches. A semiclassical picture of this localization after depinning is described. For a large number of vortices their density ρ(x)\rho(x) has square root singularity at the border of the bunch (ρ(x)\rho(x) is semicircle in the simplest case). However, by tuning the strength of current, the various singular regimes for ρ(x)\rho(x) may be reached. Remarkably, this singular behaviour reproduces the phase transitions discussed during the past decade within the random matrix regularization of 2d-Gravity.Comment: 4 pages, REVTEX, 2 eps figure

    Scaling Theory of Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Ladder Models

    The S=1/2S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on multi-leg ladders is investigated. Criticality of the ground-state transition is explored by means of finite-size scaling. The ladders with an even number of legs and those with an odd number of legs are distinguished clearly. In the former, the energy gap opens up as ΔEJ\Delta E\sim{J_\perp}, where J{J_\perp} is the strength of the antiferromagnetic inter-chain coupling.     On the High--Velocity Ejecta of the Type Ia Supernova 1994D

    Synthetic spectra generated with the parameterized supernova synthetic-spectrum code SYNOW are compared to spectra of the Type Ia SN 1994D that were obtained before the time of maximum brightness. Evidence is found for the presence of two-component Fe II and Ca II features, forming in high velocity (20,000\ge 20,000 \kms) and lower velocity (16,000\le 16,000 \kms) matter. Possible interpretations of these spectral splits, and implications for using early--time spectra of SNe Ia to probe the metallicity of the progenitor white dwarf and the nature of the nuclear burning front in the outer layers of the explosion, are discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables, Astrophysical Journal, in pres

    Effects of kinked linear defects on planar flux line arrays

    In the hard core limit, interacting vortices in planar type II superconductors can be modeled as non-interacting one dimensional fermions propagating in imaginary time. We use this analogy to derive analytical expressions for the probability density and imaginary current of vortex lines interacting with an isolated bent line defect and to understand the pinning properties of such systems. When there is an abrupt change of the direction of the pinning defect, we find a sinusoidal modulation of the vortex density in directions both parallel and perpendicular to the defect.Comment: 13 figure

    Hatano-Nelson model with a periodic potential

    We study a generalisation of the Hatano-Nelson Hamiltonian in which a periodic modulation of the site energies is present in addition to the usual random distribution. The system can then become localized by disorder or develop a band gap, and the eigenspectrum shows a wide variety of topologies.
