The experiment was aimed to study the effect of Gigaspora rosea inoculant and nitrogen fertilizer on the growth of coffee Robusta seedling. Coffee seedling which were used came from seedling of hybrid variety from BP 42 and BP 358 crossing, age 1 month. Micorrhiza fungi inoculations which were used came from Gigaspora rosea species. The experiment was conducted at Sukamantri Experiment Station Bogor Agriculture University, from December 1996 to August 1997. The experiment was arranged in Randomized Block Design with three replications. The first factor was dosage of micorhiza inoculation, consisted of 0, 5, 10 and 15 g/seedling. The second factor was dosage of nitrogen consisted of 0, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 g/seedling. Fungi inoculation treatment in the dosage 15 g/seedling showed the highest infection percentage but can not increase the growth of coffee seedling. Fungi inoculant in the dosage 5 g/seedling gave the best growth level, showed by variety height of seedling, trunk diameter; leaves total and leaves area, shoot and root biomass, compare to the other fungi inoculation dosages. The highest level of nitrogen in leaf was found in the dosage 4.5 g/seedling. Fungi inoculation in the dosage 5 g/seedling and nitrogen fertilizer in the dosage 3 g/seedling gave the highest level of leaves area and shoot biomass, compare to the other treatment combinations

Anoa, which is the endemic animal in Indonesia, its population is unevitably decreasing, therefore anoa included in the list of endangered species by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The experiment was aimed to apply the artificial insemination (AI) technique for anoa and to examine their parturition behavior. The experiment involved 2 males and 5 females anoa at Taman Safari Indonesia Bogor. Semen was collected by electroejaculator, then evaluated and diluted in Tris-egg yolk extender. The anesthetized estrous females were inseminated intracervically with extended semen (100x106 sperm/1.0 mL). Females which did not show estrous signs during 2-3 cycles after AI were predicted pregnant, and therefore confirmed by ultrasonography. As a comparison, another predicted-pregnant female after natural mating was scanned. The results showed that intracervical AI resulted pregnancy in one female, and the gestation period of anoa was ranged from 313 d (AI) to 324 d (natural mating). There were three stages of parturition process was observed: Stage 1 was characterized by the abdominal contraction and amniotic membrane rupture, Stage 2 was characterized by the fetal expulsions, and Stage 3 was characterized by the placental expulsions and ingestion of placenta by the dam. The duration of each stage of parturition was 6-8 h (stage 1), 30-60 min (stage 2), and 15-180 min (stage 3). It is concluded that AI technique was applicable to anoa in captivity, and the parturation behavior of anoa was comparable to buffalo and cattle. However, the fetal delivery occurred when the dam was in standing position and the dam ingested the placenta

Long-term exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation may adversely affect human cells and tissues of hospital radiation workers, especially peripheral blood cell count. Blood cell count analysis is a useful screening test in a routine medical checkup. A high or low blood cells count even in a healthy-looking subject leads to the suspicion of disease and it should prompt further investigations. This study was aimed to assess the effects of ionizing radiation on the hematological parameters of radiation workers at several governmental hospitals in Indonesia and correlation between years of employment and equivalent dose on one hand and the hematological parameters on the other. It included 74 medical radiation workers occupationally exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation at the Unit of Radiology and Radiotherapy and 83 controls. Fourteen hematological parameters were measured by ABX Micros 60 Hematology analyzer and the correlation between years of employment and equivalent doseas well as hematological parameters on radiation-exposed workers were tested by linear regression analysis test. Our study reported that red blood cell and monocyte counts were significantly higher in radiation-exposed workers compared to controls, whereas white blood cells, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, and lymphocytes values were significantly lower in radiation-exposed workers. A significant correlation was observed between equivalent dose and red blood cells (RBCs) parameter (P=0.001) with a decline in RBC level of 0.541×106/µL per 1 mSv increase of radiation dose. The present study recommends that further studies shoulduse a larger sample size and include various independent variables (genetic polymorphism, chromosome aberration, micronucleus frequency) to study the long-term effects of low-dose radiation exposure on radiation-exposed workers

Anoa is Indonesia endemic fauna that included into Appendix I by CITES. Anoa breeding efforts have not succeed, due to their agressivity, soliter, wildness and monogamous. The aim of this experiment was to observe morphology and biometry of anoa's sperm stained using William's (W) and eosin-nigrosin (EN). Semen was collected from two male anoas by electroejaculator. Slides was made for morphology and biometry observation of ejaculate. The results showed that abnormal sperm morphology of the mature anoa (10 years) was 32.27%-35.00%, meanwhile the young one (3 years) was 24.03%-31.89%. In mature anoa, measurement for head width, and midpiece and tail length of sperm were not signficantly different between W and EN staining, but significantly different (P < 0.05) for head and total length. In the young anoa, sperm biometry for head width was not significanly different between W and EN staining. In both W and EN staining, biometry for head width and total length were not significantly different between mature and young anoas, but significantly different for head, midpiece and tail length. According to sperm morphology, semen from the young anoa was slightly better than those of the mature anoa. Staining method and age could affect to biometry of the anoa's sperm

    Get PDF
In industrially developing countries (IDC), small and medium enterprises (SMEs) account for the highest proprotion of employment. Unfortunately, the working conditions in SMEs are often very poor and expose employees to a potentially wide range of health and safety risks. This paper presents a comprehensive review of 161 articles related to ergonomics application in SMEs, using Indonesia as a case study. The aim of this paper is to investigate the extent of ergonomics application and identify areas that can be improved to promote effective ergonomics for SMEs in IDC. The most urgent issue found is the need for adopting participatory approach in contrast to the commonly implemented top-down approach. Some good practices in ergonomics application were also revealed from the review, e.g. a multidisciplinary approach, unsophisticated and low-cost solutions, and recognising the importance of productivity. The review also found that more work is still required to achieve appropriate cross-cultural adaptation of ergonomics application. Practitioner Summary: Despite continuous efforts in addressing ergonomics issues in SMEs of IDC, workers are still exposed to poor work conditions. We reviewed factual-based evidence of current ergonomics application to inform future strategies of ergonomics in IDC, using Indonesia as a case study

Using the Self-Determination Theory, the authors investigate the consequence of motivation. Specifically, this study analyzes the impacts of amotivation, extrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation toward proactive behavior of headquarter employees. Answering research problems and examining hypotheses, the authors applied regression technic to analysis eighty three data collected in the state organization which cover the Divisions under Directors of Finance and Human Resources and Sales Division outside of Finance & Human Resources Directors. The results of this research show that amotivation, extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation significantly and directly affect headquarter employee's proactive behavior. These findings imply that company should give attention to the emergence of amotivation because amotivation can reduce or eliminate an employee's proactive behavior in work which can ultimately disrupt the company's performance. Moreover, the authors conclude by presenting theoretical and managerial implication

Antiradical activity of Aloe vera extracts was studied in vitro systems. Cloudy and Clarified of Aloe vera extracts exhibited marked activity on inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation. At a concentration of 0,15 mg, Cloudy extracts exhibited higher antioxidant activity (60,16 %) than Cloudy extracts (53,30 %). Moreover, the antioxidant activity of Clarified extracts was increased affected by the concentation in the system. Increasing the concentration of Cloudy extracts up to 0,60 mg in the system did nor alter of antoxidant activity (P 50,05). Increasing' of the concentration of activated carbon (0,00 to 0,50 % and 1,00 to 2,00 %) used for clarification of Aloe vera was produced significanly decrease in scavenging 1,1-dipheny1-2- pictylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical activity. Scavenging of free radical activity of Cloudy extracts was not affected by the concentration of extract in the system. Increasing the concentration of Clarifed Aloe vera extracts from 2,50 mg to 5,0 mg. in liposome systems was produced significantly higher of inhibitory malondyaldehyde formation than the concentration of 0,50 mg and 1,25 mg (P :50,05). Base of these results, termination of free radical reactions in Cloudy and Clarified of Aloe vera extracts is responsible for the antioxidant activity of Aloe vera extracts
