Simulation of fluid flow mechanisms in high permeability zones (Super-K) in a giant naturally fractured carbonate reservoir
Fluid flow mechanisms in a large naturally fractured heterogeneous carbonate reservoir were investigated in this manuscript. A very thin layer with high permeability that produces the majority of production from specific wells and is deemed the Super-K Zone was investigated. It is known that these zones are connected to naturally occurring fractures. Fluid flow in naturally fractured reservoirs is a very difficult mechanism to understand. To accomplish this mission, the Super-K Zone and fractures were treated as two systems. Reservoir management practices and decisions should be very carefully reviewed and executed in this dual continuum reservoir based on the results of this work. Studying this dual media flow behavior is vital for better future completion strategies and for enhanced reservoir management decisions. The reservoir geology, Super-K identification and natural fractures literature were reviewed. To understand how fluid flows in such a dual continuum reservoir, a dual permeability simulation model has been studied. Some geological and production iv data were used; however, due to unavailability of some critical values of the natural fractures, the model was assumed hypothetical. A reasonable history match was achieved and was set as a basis of the reservoir model. Several sensitivity studies were run to understand fluid flow behavior and prediction runs were executed to help make completion recommendations for future wells based on the results obtained. Conclusions and recommended completions were highlighted at the end of this research. It was realized that the natural fractures are the main source of premature water breakthrough, and the Super-K acts as a secondary cause of water channeling to the wellbore
Generalizations of the Hamming Associative Memory
This Letter reviews four models of associative memory which generalize the operation of the Hamming associative memory: the grounded Hamming memory, the cellular Hamming memory, the decoupled Hamming memory, and the two-level decoupled Hamming memory. Analysis of Bidirectional Associative Memory using SCSNA and Statistical Neurodynamics
Bidirectional associative memory (BAM) is a kind of an artificial neural
network used to memorize and retrieve heterogeneous pattern pairs. Many efforts
have been made to improve BAM from the the viewpoint of computer application,
and few theoretical studies have been done. We investigated the theoretical
characteristics of BAM using a framework of statistical-mechanical analysis. To
investigate the equilibrium state of BAM, we applied self-consistent signal to
noise analysis (SCSNA) and obtained a macroscopic parameter equations and
relative capacity. Moreover, to investigate not only the equilibrium state but
also the retrieval process of reaching the equilibrium state, we applied
statistical neurodynamics to the update rule of BAM and obtained evolution
equations for the macroscopic parameters. These evolution equations are
consistent with the results of SCSNA in the equilibrium state.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Making Free Trade Fair
Philosophers have done very little work on what makes trade fair. Perhaps the most extensive discussion is Malgorzata Kurjanska and Mathias Risse’s article, “Fairness in Trade II: export subsidies and the fair trade movement.”2 In their article, Kurjanska and Risse consider the case for trade subsidies and the Fair Trade movement. They suggest that it is not permissible for developed countries to give their producers subsidies because doing so does not strike an appropriate balance between meeting the needs of the global poor and protecting domestic workers (Kurjanska and Risse, 2008: 34). Kurjanska and Risse also argue that the case for Fair Trade hinges, primarily, on whether or not it is part of the best development strategy for poor countries. They do not think Fair Trade is part of the best development strategy and, so, they believe purchasing Fair Trade certified goods is only acceptable because doing so does not constitute a large share of the market in traded goods. This chapter argues that the case against subsidies and Fair Trade Kurjanska and Risse present is much weaker than they make out. To the contrary, it argues that giving some subsidies and purchasing some Fair Trade certified goods may even be necessary to make trade fair. Current status and future perspectives of lithium metal batteries
With the lithium-ion technology approaching its intrinsic limit with graphite-based anodes, Li metal is recently receiving renewed interest from the battery community as potential high capacity anode for next-generation rechargeable batteries. In this focus paper, we review the main advances in this field since the first attempts in the mid-1970s. Strategies for enabling reversible cycling and avoiding dendrite growth are thoroughly discussed, including specific applications in all-solid-state (inorganic and polymeric), Lithium–Sulfur (Li–S) and Lithium-O2 (air) batteries. A particular attention is paid to recent developments of these battery technologies and their current state with respect to the 2030 targets of the EU Integrated Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) Action 7
Rod-Shaped Microglia Morphology Is Associated with Aging in 2 Human Autopsy Series
A subtype of microglia is defined by the morphological appearance of the cells as rod-shaped. Little is known about this intriguing cell type, as there are only a few case reports describing rod-shaped microglia in the neuropathological literature. Rod-shaped microglia were shown recently to account for a substantial proportion of the microglia cells in the hippocampus of both demented and cognitively intact aged individuals. We hypothesized that aging could be a defining feature in the occurrence of rod-shaped microglia. To test this hypothesis, two independent series of autopsy cases (total n=168 cases), which covered the adult lifespan from 20 – 100+ years old, were included in the study. The presence or absence of rod-shaped microglia was scored on IBA1 immunohistochemically stained slides for the hippocampus and cortex. We found that age was one of the strongest determinants for the presence of rod-shaped microglia in the hippocampus and the cortex. We found no association with the presence of rod-shaped microglia and a self-reported history of a TBI. Alzheimer’s disease related pathology was found to influence the presence of rod-shaped microglia, but only in the parietal cortex and not in the hippocampus or temporal cortex. Future studies are warranted to determine the functional relevance of rod-shaped microglia in supporting the health of neurons in the aged brain, and the signaling processes that regulate the formation of rod-shaped microglia
Melflufen for relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma
Introduction: The overall survival of patients with multiple myeloma has improved with the advent of novel agents; however, multiple myeloma remains incurable. Combinations of standard-of-care agents such as immunomodulators, proteasome inhibitors, and anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies are increasingly used in earlier lines of therapy. Patients with disease that is refractory to multiple novel agents represent a population with high unmet medical need and for whom therapies with new mechanisms of action could be beneficial. Melphalan flufenamide (melflufen) has demonstrated encouraging activity in patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma. Areas covered: This review provides an overview of the mechanism of action of melflufen, a first-in-class peptide-drug conjugate that targets aminopeptidases and rapidly delivers alkylating agents into tumor cells. It reviews key Phase I and II clinical trial data for melflufen in combination with dexamethasone as well as in triplet combinations with daratumumab or bortezomib. The safety profile of melflufen, which is characterized primarily by clinically manageable hematologic adverse events, is described. Expert opinion: Melflufen has potential to fill a gap in the myeloma treatment landscape by providing a new mechanism of action with clinically meaningful efficacy and a favorable safety profile in patients refractory to multiple novel agents
