Social and spatial conflicts: the settlement process in Israel during the 1950s and the 1960s

The geometric tradition in geography has been recently criticized for its preoccupation with spatial systems as they appear at the empirical level. In contrast, it has been argued that the elements of observable reality should be understood through the mediation of underlying socio-political structure. In accordance with this approach, the formation of space in Israel is reexamined by locating spatial structure within social formation. Israeli society has been characterized by social conflict resulting from the uneven distribution of social, political and organizational power among social groups, and from the incompatible interests of each group. In its attempt to reproduce the social system, the social-democratic state has internalized part of the conflict but could not eliminate it. Geographically, the social conflict has evolved into a spatial one, assuming at all scales — national, regional or intra-urban — a core-periphery pattern.Conflits sociaux et conflits spatiaux : le processus de peuplement en Israël de 1950 à 1970. — On a récemment critiqué la tradition géométrique en géographie pour l'intérêt qu'elle porte aux systèmes spatiaux tels qu'ils apparaissent au niveau empirique. On a affirmé, au contraire, que les éléments de la réalité observable devraient être étudiés par l'intermédiaire de la structure socio-politique sous-jacente. Suivant cette approche, la formation de l'espace israélien est réexaminée en replaçant la structure spatiale à l'intérieur de la formation sociale. La société israélienne est marquée par un conflit social qui résulte de la distribution inégale du pouvoir social, politique et organisationnel entre les différents groupes sociaux. Dans ses efforts pour reproduire le système social, l'Etat social-démocrate a partiellement intériorisé le conflit mais n'a pas pu l'éliminer. Sur le plan géographique, le conflit social s'est transformé en un conflit spatial qui a pris un aspect d'opposition centre-périphérie à tous les niveaux : national, régional et intra-urbain.Hasson Shlomo.
