The study aimed to determine the prevalence rate, the level of endoparasites infestation among breeds of birds and most infested parasite in the birds in some live bird markets. 245 faecal samples were collected from some species of birds in 7 live bird markets in Kaduna metropolis undergo sedimentation and floatation for survey of endoparasites. The result showed that 14 (5.7%) samples were positive for endoparasites. There were prevalence variations among different endoparasites such as Ascaridia galli (2%), Raillietina tetragona (0.4%), Subular brumpti (0.4%) and Eimeria oocyst (2.9%). The endoparasites in local chicken revealed Eimeria oocyst and Ascaridia gallias 5.7% and 14.3% respectively, but layers reported Eimeria oocysts 8.6%. While Broilers recorded 2.9% of Eimeria oocyts, Raillietina tetragona and Subular brumpti each. Pigeon also recorded 2.9% of Eimeria oocyts. In Checheniya market, 1 (2.9%) was positive for Ascaridia galli and in Library market, Eimeria oocyst and Ascaridia galli had 1 (2.9%), while in Kasuwan Barci, Eimeria oocyst and Raillietina tetragona had 1 (2.9%), and Kawo market had 1 (2.9%) with Subbular brumpti., Railway market had 2 (5.7%) , with Eimeria oocyst, and in Sabo market, Eimeria oocyst and Ascaridia galli had 1 (2.9%) while in Station market, Eimeria oocyst and Ascaridia galli had 2 (5.7%). Conclusively, this study observed a less prevalence of endoparasitism of poultry with 5.7% prevalence rate and Eimeria oocyst was implicated as the most infested parasite in live bird markets within Kaduna metropolis. Influence of number of valves on catch composition of a fishing pot trap (Lege) in River Rima, north western Nigeria

Three types of prototype (Lege) traps with different numbers of entrance valves were evaluated in River Rima, north western Nigeria. The traps contained 4,6 and 8 valves, tagged 4-V, 6-V and 8-V respectively. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with one factor each replicated three times. Data collected on fish diversity, number, biomass and sizes were subjected to descriptive statistics and analysis of variance. The results of the catch composition showed close diversity index of 0.86 for 6-V, 0.80 for 8-V and 0.60 for 4-V Lege traps. However, the number (41%) and biomass (48%) of fish caught in the 6-V Lege trap were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those caught in the other traps. There was no definite trend in the sizes (length and girth) of fish caught in the traps. On the basis of species diversity, and the number and biomass of fish caught, the 6-V Lege showed preference for adoption than the other two traps. However, further studies are recommended on the appropriate mesh size net for the trap in line with the provisions of fisheries edict

    Kappa-symmetry for coincident D-branes

A kappa-symmetric action for coincident D-branes is presented. It is valid in the approximation that the additional fermionic variables, used to incorporate the non-abelian degrees of freedom, are treated classically. The action is written as a Bernstein-Leites integral on the supermanifold obtained from the bosonic worldvolume by adjoining the extra fermions. The integrand is a very simple extension of the usual Green-Schwarz action for a single brane; all symmetries, except for kappa, are manifest, and the proof of kappa-symmetry is very similar to the abelian case.Comment: 18 pages. Superstrings on NS5 backgrounds, deformed AdS3 and holography

We study a non-standard decoupling limit of the D1/D5-brane system, which interpolates between the near-horizon geometry of the D1/D5 background and the near-horizon limit of the pure D5-brane geometry. The S-dual description of this background is actually an exactly solvable two-dimensional (worldsheet) conformal field theory: {null-deformed SL(2,R)} x SU(2) x T^4 or K3. This model is free of strong-coupling singularities. By a careful treatment of the SL(2,R), based on the better-understood SL(2,R) / U(1) coset, we obtain the full partition function for superstrings on SL(2,R) x SU(2) x K3. This allows us to compute the partition functions for the J^3 and J^2 current-current deformations, as well as the full line of supersymmetric null deformations, which links the SL(2,R) conformal field theory with linear dilaton theory. The holographic interpretation of this setup is a renormalization-group flow between the decoupled NS5-brane world-volume theory in the ultraviolet (Little String Theory), and the low-energy dynamics of super Yang--Mills string-like instantons in six dimensions.Comment: JHEP style, 59 pages, 1 figure; v2: minor changes, to appear in JHE

Demographic transition and the real exchange rate in Australia: An empirical investigation

    Get PDF
This article utilizes the empirical findings that age structure of the population affects saving, investment and capital flow and hypothesizes that age structure influences the real exchange rate. Based on this link, an empirical model is specified for Australia and estimated with annual data for the period 1970–2011. An autoregressive distributed lag model of cointegration indicates that Australia's real exchange rate is cointegrated with its productivity differential and the relative share of young dependents (0–14 years) in the population. Long-run estimates show that young cohort has an appreciating influence on the real exchange rate. Also, the short-run adjustment is substantial, with more than 65% of the disequilibrium corrected in a year

Distinct H3F3A and H3F3B driver mutations define chondroblastoma and giant cell tumor of bone

It is recognized that some mutated cancer genes contribute to the development of many cancer types, whereas others are cancer type specific. For genes that are mutated in multiple cancer classes, mutations are usually similar in the different affected cancer types. Here, however, we report exquisite tumor type specificity for different histone H3.3 driver alterations. In 73 of 77 cases of chondroblastoma (95%), we found p.Lys36Met alterations predominantly encoded in H3F3B, which is one of two genes for histone H3.3. In contrast, in 92% (49/53) of giant cell tumors of bone, we found histone H3.3 alterations exclusively in H3F3A, leading to p.Gly34Trp or, in one case, p.Gly34Leu alterations. The mutations were restricted to the stromal cell population and were not detected in osteoclasts or their precursors. In the context of previously reported H3F3A mutations encoding p.Lys27Met and p.Gly34Arg or p.Gly34Val alterations in childhood brain tumors, a remarkable picture of tumor type specificity for histone H3.3 driver alterations emerges, indicating that histone H3.3 residues, mutations and genes have distinct functions
