Blue Ocean Strategy: Application in Universiti Sains Malaysia Library
The Blue Ocean strategy was developed by W.C. Kim and R. Mauborgne. It is relatively new and was only introduced in 2004, where its recommends looking at the market boundaries differently and formulating products or services to customers from different segments. Organizations such as libraries should raise the standard of activities higher than the common standard and offer customers higher values than their competitors. In other words, libraries need to deliver value at low cost and simultaneously they need to reduce and eliminate other insignificant activities. This paper focuses on several tools and models of the Blue Ocean strategy namely the “Eliminate-Reduce-Raise-Create Grid” model since the main key ideas fall under the “Create Grid” where the innovative value takes place, as well as to create unique values for customers. Thus, the application of this model at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Library is vital in the provision of successful customer service, best quality and satisfying products
The role and significance of career development fund in strengthening library talent
Career Development Fund (TKKSP) was established in 1984 in Universiti Sains Malaysia Library. The
initiatives of the fund began from the idea of Chief Librarian Lim Huck Tee to serve and assist library
staff in the development of their career and vocational skills. From the beginning, the funds are
made possible through the generosity of the professional staff and librarians in USM libraries. The
purpose of these funds is to support career enhancing acavities and monies from the fund are
expanded to provide total support for library staff to participate in job and career related
development acavities. Library staff is encouraged to utilize the fund wherever they believe the
participation will contribute to their personal and professional career growth in the field of
librarianship and other discipline as well as strengthening their vocational preparation

Open Access Publication of Universiti Sains Malaysia: a Bibliometric Analysis
Open Access (OA) is the new publishing model that allows unrestricted access and reuse of research outputs. OA accelerates discovery in the sense that researchers can freely read and build on new findings based on other research. While public seems to welcome more involvement in OA among academics, many researchers are still discussing about the challenges that they face to publish with OA journals including the issue of article processing charge (APC) and the quality of OA journals. This paper examines several aspects relate to OA publication such as publication productivity, citation impact, subject coverage, and publishing cost of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) based on SCOPUS data from 2013 to 2015. The findings show that School of Medical Sciences, Physics and Pharmacy dominated the OA publications. Thus, it also indicates that science-based researchers are highly inclined towards publishing in OA as compared to non-science researchers. Top three OA journals in the list are Plos One (Multidisciplinary), Acta Chrystallographica Section E (Chemistry) and Electronic Journal of Geotechnical Engineering (Engineering, Geology). Most of the authors tend to publish in Quartile 3 journals (43%), followed by Q2 (28%), Q1 (16%) and Q4 (13%). However, with regard to citation impact per paper (average), every paper in Q1 journal received 6.25 citations, followed by Q2 (2.8 citations), Q3 (1.33 citations) and Q4 (0.87 citation). The APC range of OA publication found to be from RM0 to RM15, 000 per paper. The study provides useful insights about OA publication among USM researchers which can guide other researchers who wish to engage with OA in the future. Further study can be done by interviewing authors, to further explore on the OA research funding, strategy in choosing OA journals to publish in and also the motivation in publishing with OA
The Establishment Of Strategic Program In Research Support Service (SPIRESS) In USM Library
Along with the modernization, Malaysia Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs) have
implemented multiple kinds of transformation plans. Currently, there is a comprehensive
transformation plan written in Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education)
(MEB) (HE) as a guideline for Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs), Polytechnics and
Community Colleges. Hence, the HLIs Libraries or known as Academic Libraries were
intangibly pressured to perform new roles and services in order to fulfil the future demands
in the rapid pace of Research and Development (R&D) landscape. This paper shares
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Library’s experience in developing the new service
segments called Strategic Program in Research Support Service (SPiReSS). The introduction
of SPiReSS was intended to facilitate students and academicians research activities. Five
service segments were introduced namely as Mendeley, Easy-to-Write with Microsoft (MS)
Word, Open Access Publication, Google Drive, and Google Scholar. This paper described
comprehensively on how the USM Library implement the SPiReSS project especially in terms
of developing the service model, enhance the Academic Librarians capabilities, analyzing
the participants’ feedback, and explain the types of challenges the Academic Librarians encounter. The SPiReSS project has triggered the interest of HLIs community especially in
USM. Due to the remarkable result, the SPiReSS project should create more service segments
in order to substantially supporting the research activities in HLIs

Internationalisation and Its Implications for Intercultural Maturity among Academic Staff: A Case Study
AbstractThe process of internationalisation can in many ways assist staff in being interculturally matured through prolong and accumulative intercultural communication experiences. Staff may undergo a gradual transformation towards being interculturally matured – thus the emergence of an intercultural personhood. Intercultural personhood coined by Kim (2008), describes individuals who move beyond the bounds of their own cultural beings and heritage to accept both their formal cultural identity and host identity. This paper explores an internationalisation project between two universities namely Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) in Germany and how this project has internationalised staff and altogether making them more interculturally matured. The findings explain the cycle of staff who initially practice only one culture, communicates with the environment, co-evolves in the new environment thus illustrating identity changes through their live experiences to become persons with multicultural traits
MYDAMAI HOME apps for post COVID 19 pandemic: an innovative system to enhance well-being via work-life balance among women
Following the COVID 19 pandemic outbreak, mental health and wellbeing of employed women are at stake. The Movement Control Order (MCO) has forced the majority employed women to play multiple roles in a 24/7 situation with little break if ever for her own self-care. Therefore, we propose a new employment scheme called DAMAI (Domestic Assistant Malaysian Affectionate Initiative) along with mobile and web applications online housekeepers and caregivers to improve the well-being of working women by including computer implemented genogram as mental health screening. To provide a comprehensive solution to the problem, human ecological theory, family systems theory and women well-being model are discussed. While the theory of planned behavior (TBP) and technology acceptance models are referred to in the development of web and mobile applications called MyDAMAI HOME. Finally, the presentation of the Mock Up MyDAMAI Home mark the end this paper with conclusion
