    Get PDF
Shifting from Western-dominated perspectives, this study aimed to investigate relationship between religion and work-family conflict and enrichment. SPSS analysis was conducted on data obtained through two self-report questionnaires completed three months apart by 296 executives and non-executives from six public and private sector organizations in Kuching, Sarawak. After controlling for conflict and enrichment at Time 1, aspects of religion (importance of religion and perception of religiousness) negatively related with work-family conflict and positively associated with work-family enrichment. The study underscores the roles religion, which have been neglected in Western studies, as important parts in shaping the work-family interface in Malaysia. Therefore, organizations should include religious activities to encourage work-life balance among employees

    Get PDF
Shifting from Western-dominated perspectives, demands and resources from the community domain were investigated, together with work and family domains to predict work-family and family-work conflict. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted on data obtained through two self-report questionnaires completed three months apart by 277 executives and non-executives from three public and private sector organisations in Sarawak, East Malaysia. After controlling for conflict at Time 1, work demands were a positive predictor; while work resources were a negative predictor of work-family conflict and family work conflict at Time 2. In addition, community demands work-family conflict and family work conflict at Time 2. The study underscores the roles of community which has been neglected in Western studies, as important in influencing the work-family conflict in Malaysia. Therefore, to better understand the work-family conflict in a society which is predominantly collectivist and has strong cultural beliefs and values, aspects of community should be incorporated

Boredom is widespread contagious bacterial experienced by all occupational levels at increasing trend and that influences employees’ affection, cognition, and well-being. However, limited studies are carried out to investigate the influence of boredom at workplace on turnover intention. In academia, academicians are mentally and physically overloaded due to heavy workload and student disruptive behaviour. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between workload, student disruptive behaviour, and turnover intention among academicians. A quantitative study was conducted to obtain the data from 279 academicians working for 20 private higher education institutions (PHEIs) in Sarawak. The results showed that workload was negatively associated with turnover intention, while student disruptive behaviours were positively associated with turnover intention. A structural mediation model showed that workload was negatively associated with boredom which led to positive association with turnover intention. In contrast, student disruptive behaviour was positively associated with boredom and which resulted in turnover intention. After performing bootstrapping, the result confirmed the presence of boredom as mediator. PHEIs should establish technologies and facilities to reduce the academicians’ workload. The academicians should also be provided with trainings related to class management and learning tools in order to minimize their boredom and turnover intention. From the practical legal perspective and engaging at the instrumental and normative levels, this research attempts to focus on the legal critiques of the Computer Crimes Act 1997. In particular, on the question of what is cyber crime, why is reform needed to the substantive provisions of the said Act and what changes are sought for as well as the rationales in reforming the said Act. Issues affecting the degree or kind or both that drive the need for reform of the 1997 Act will be also be discussed. In line with the approach of common law jurisdictions, in particular the United Kingdom and Singapore as well as the Cyber crime Convention 2001, the research will examine the problems of substantive law, specifically the provisions that may be inadequate to cover certain cyber crimes such as distributed denial of service and the provisions that may in fact cover too wide an area of conduct. Also, from the theoretical level, philosophical issues involved in cyber crime, in particular the problem of identifying legal interests and emerging legal interests will be examined. Adopting a doctrinal and library-based research approach with content analysis as the research design, this current research proposes to scrutinize the 1997 Act in comparison with its Singapore and the United Kingdom counterparts, Computer Misuse Act 1993 and the Computer Misuse Act 1990 respectively. A cursory look at the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 would also be necessary to examine if the former statute have adequately supplemented the 1997 Act. The Council of Europe Cyber crime Convention 2001, a significant piece of international instrument, which is broadly aimed at harmonizing cyber crime laws around the world, will also be critically examined to determine the extent to which the 1997 Act in its current form is in keeping with this Convention

    Get PDF
The hotel sector has been described as an industry of which activities constitute a great impact on the environment. Hotels consume vast amount of energy, water and non-durable goods, and has been reported to discharge huge amount of raw and solid waste in different quantities. Serious impacts on the environment were highlighted, calling for greater hotel’s participation in sustainable tourism practices by committing to environmental management system (EMS). Comprehensive studies among hotels in Malaysia on their contributing efforts in curbing environmental degradation have been inadequate. Hence, a current study was conducted and this paper presents findings on sustainable tourism practices most commonly adopted by Malaysian hotels within Klang Valley. The main findings indicate the use of occupancy sensor/key card control system as energy saving measures, as well as the use of energy-efficient equipments and products. This result, therefore, confirms a number of preliminary studies which indicates widespread adoption of energy management among hotels. Adopting these practices has enabled Malaysian hotels to benefit from improved image to the guests and the local communities as well as the enhancement of a safe and healthy environment for hotel guests and employees

Reactive arthritis in tuberculosis : a case of Poncet's disease

    Get PDF
Reactive arthritis and erythema are uncommon presentations of tuberculosis (TB). Reactive arthritis in tuberculosis (TB) is known as Poncet's disease, a rare aseptic form of arthritis observed in patients with active TB. We report a case of Poncet's disease in a 20-year old man whose reactive arthritis overshadowed other clinical symptoms of TB resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. Although a conclusive diagnosis of Poncet's disease is not possible, reactive immunologic reactions such as reactive arthritis and erythema nodosum even without respiratory symptoms should raise suspicion on possible TB. Thus, taking a thorough medical history as well as performing relevant examinations and investigations for possible TB will help expedite the diagnostic process
