Expatriation in Malaysia: Predictors of Cross-Cultural Adjustment among Hotel Expatriates

    Get PDF
The stress experienced by expatriates is usually caused by the inability to adjust to the host culture, which largely results from their lack of social skills needed in dealing with the new cultural environment. Thus, the main purpose of this study is to identify the predictors of cross-cultural adjustment among expatriates in Malaysia, by focusing on expatriates in hotel industry. The findings from the study could help clarify the over generalization made of data which are usually based on certain locations and groups of expatriates. Two hundred and three expatriates participated in the study. Personality, language ability, previous international experience, training, human resource support, social support, culture distance and family adjustment were analyzed using the multiple regression analysis to determine the predictors of adjustment. The data, which was drawn from a drop and collect method, self-administered questionnaire, revealed that social support and family adjustment were the most influential predictors of hotel expatriate adjustment. The findings also suggest that over generalizations of findings across disciplines are rather inappropriate. Detail discussions on the methods, findings, limitations, and suggestions for future research are presented in the paper

Preface: Communication, empowerment and governance: The 21st century enigma

    Get PDF
Communication in the 21st century is transforming rapidly through the globalization of organizations and digital technologies.Communication not only shapes organizational governance and empowerment but also influences our way of thinking.Due to these twin forces, the roles of communication must be explored in the context of organizational governance and its impact on media and society. The economic crisis that hit East Asian countries just before the turn of the 21st century and Europe a decade or so later has proven to be a transformative factor triggering local conflict and change (e.g., leadership transitions and uneven liberalization of global economic policies, among others) and creating new organizing processes forcing disparate countries together in closer interactions. In these closer interactions, pressures for conformity and adherence to institutional norms have become a manifest. But the basic clash between western-based conceptions of liberal economic regionalism and the Asian value of mercantilism has created conflicts making future cooperation more difficult. Situations exemplifying this can be found around the globe in very different contexts, even as it is still somewhat surprising to come across the application of similar methodologies in different scenarios and backgrounds. In addressing events such as the economic crisis that befell the East Asian countries, this conference discusses the crucial concerns (and their potential solutions) related to the emergence, interconnected elements from various communication contexts, organizational government perspectives and empowerment that influence our way of thinking in the context of the basic clash between Western-based conceptions of liberal economic regionalism and the Asian value of mercantilism. The conference provides a broad platform for discourse on the emergence and interconnected issues shaped by the meaning of communication, governance and empowerment as understood in the Asia-Pacific region as well as other parts of the world. The 2014 theme “Communication, Empowerment and Governance: The 21st Century Enigma” is aimed toward advancing scholarships in the field of communication which would benefit communities that are experiencing change. This volume comprises papers that were presented at the 4th International Conference on Communication and Media (i-COME’14) which was held in Langkawi Island, from the 18 to 20 October 2014.Organised by the Communication Department, School of Multimedia Technology and Communication, Universiti Utara Malaysia, this conference was attended by 200 participants from 20 countries, including those from Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia. As guest editors of the conference proceedings, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the members of the scientific committee, reviewers and contributors to this volume for their goodwill, support and patience in revising their papers. We are also grateful to the committee members of the i-COME’14 who have assisted us in bringing this volume to fruition

In the era of challenging economic, the industry in our country has been forced to produce a good quality product and increase the productivity of machining process simultaneously in order to compete with other countries. Drrilling process is one of a very important cutting process in industry. In a drilling for machining by Computer Numerical Control (CNC) such as drilling machines, the parameter of the tool routing path for the machining operation plays a very important role to minimize the machining time (Tiwari 2013, Rao and Kalyankar 2012) . This machine can be used with procedures for drilling, spreading, weaning and threading with a lot of the holes precisely. In order to increase the efficiency and productivity of drilling process, optimization on parameters of process can lead to better performance. Optimization of holes drilling operations will lead to reduction in time order and better productivity of manufacturing systems. Optimizing the tool path has played an important role, especially in mass production because reducing the time to produce one piece eventually lead to a significant reduction in the cost of the entire series (Pezer, 2016). In various publications and articles, scientists and researchers adapted several methods of artificial intelligence (AI) or hybrid optimization method for tool path artificial immune system (AIS), genetic algorithms (GA), Artificial Neural networks (ANN) Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) (Narooei and Ramli, 2014). These methods were been proven that can produce better performance and increase the productivity of drilling process. Therefore, in this study, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm was develop in order to minimizing the tool path length in the drilling process which can produce the better results for the required machining time process. For this study, the main purpose is to apply the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm for use in searching for the optimal tool routing path for in simulation of drilling proces
