Four dimensional observations of clouds from geosynchronous orbit using stereo display and measurement techniques on an interactive information processing system
Simultaneous Geosynchronous Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) 1 km resolution visible image pairs can provide quantitative three dimensional measurements of clouds. These data have great potential for severe storms research and as a basic parameter measurement source for other areas of meteorology (e.g. climate). These stereo cloud height measurements are not subject to the errors and ambiguities caused by unknown cloud emissivity and temperature profiles that are associated with infrared techniques. This effort describes the display and measurement of stereo data using digital processing techniques
Wind estimates from cloud motions: Preliminary results from phases 1, 2, and 3 of an in situ aircraft verification experiment
Low level aircraft equipped with Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) were used to define the vertical extent and horizontal motion of a cloud and to measure the ambient wind field. A high level aircraft, also equipped with an INS, took photographs to describe the horizontal extent of the cloud field and to measure cloud motion. The aerial photographs were also used to make a positive identification in a satellite picture of the cloud observed by the low level aircraft. The experiment was conducted over the tropical oceans in the vicinity of Florida, Puerto Rico, Panama and in the Western Gulf of Mexico. Results for tropical cumulus clouds indicate excellent agreement between the cloud motion and the wind at the cloud base. The magnitude of the vector difference between the cloud motion and the cloud base wind is less than 1.3 m/sec for 67% of the cases with track lengths of 1 hour or longer. The cirrus cloud motions agreed best with the mean wind in the cloud layer with a vector difference of about 1.6 m/sec
Serious bacterial infections in patients with rheumatoid arthritis under antiâTNFâα therapy
Objective. With rising numbers of antiâtumour necrosis factor α (TNFâα) treatments for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Crohn's disease and other conditions, physicians unaware of potential pitfalls are increasingly likely to encounter associated severe infections. Our purpose was to assess the incidence and nature of severe infections in our RA patients under antiâTNFâα therapy. Methods. We reviewed patient charts and records of the Infectious Disease Unit for serious infections in patients with RA in the 2âyr preceding antiâTNFâα therapy and during therapy. Results. Serious infections affected 18.3% of patients treated with infliximab or etanercept. The incidence was 0.181 per antiâTNFâα treatment year vs 0.008 in the 2âyr preceding antiâTNFâα therapy. In several cases, only a few signs or symptoms indicated the severity of developing infections, including sepsis. Conclusions. A high level of suspicion of infection is necessary in patients under antiâTNFâα therapy. We suggest additional strategies for the prevention, rapid identification and preâemptive therapy of such infection

The tag emits a continuous signal at approximately 65 kc/sec. The signal is received via a directional hydrophone and a high quality communications receiver. Tracking ranges of up to 1 km have been obtained. The placement of the tag is internal: either into the stomach or into the body cavity of the fish. The tags and tracking equipment have been successfully employed in studies on the open water movements and orientation of white bass during their spawning migration

Source sentence simplification for statistical machine translation
Long sentences with complex syntax and long-distance dependencies pose difficulties for machine translation systems. Short sentences, on the other hand, are usually easier to translate. We study the potential of addressing this mismatch using text simplifi- cation: given a simplified version of the full input sentence, can we use it in addition to the full input to improve translation? We show that the spaces of original and simplified translations can be effectively combined using translation lattices and compare two decoding approaches to process both inputs at different levels of integration. We demonstrate on source-annotated portions of WMT test sets and on top of strong baseline systems combining hierarchical and neural translation for two language pairs that source simplification can help to improve translation quality.This work was supported by the EPSRC grant Improving Target Language Fluency in Statistical Machine Translation, grant number EP/L027623/1
Hadron calorimeter with MAPD readout in the NA61/SHINE experiment
The modular hadron calorimeter with micro-pixel avalanche photodiodes readout
for the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS is presented. The calorimeter
consists of 44 independent modules with lead-scintillator sandwich structure.
The light from the scintillator tiles is captured by and transported with
WLS-fibers embedded in scintillator grooves. The construction provides a
longitudinal segmentation of the module in 10 sections with independent MAPD
readout. MAPDs with pixel density of /mm ensure good linearity of
calorimeter response in a wide dynamical range. The performance of the
calorimeter prototype in a beam test is reported
