    Reduction of seafood processing wastewater using technologies enhanced by swim–bed technology

    The increasing growth of the seafood processing industries considerably requires more industrial process activities and water consumption. It is estimated that approximately 10–40 m3 of wastewater is generated from those industries for processing one-tonne of raw materials. Due to limitations and regulations in natural resources utilization, a suitable and systematic wastewater treatment plant is very important to meet rigorous discharge standards. As a result of food waste biodegradability, the biological treatment and some extent of swim-bed technology, including a novel acryl-fibre (biofilm) material might be used effectively to meet the effluent discharge criteria.     Metaphor and Metonymy in Ancient Dream Interpretation: The Case of Islamic-Iranian Culture

    This paper aims to investigate the relevance of metaphor and metonymy to ancient dream interpretation in Islamic-Iranian culture. To this end, a most-referenced book of dream interpretation is analysed according to the conceptual metaphor theory. The results show that metaphor and metonymy play an important role in this ancient discourse. The metaphorical dream is based either on a resemblance between the dream as the source domain and its interpretation as the target domain, or on some symbolic metaphors arising from cultural conventions. The metonymic dream is formed by a contiguous relationship between the dream as the vehicle entity and its interpretation as the target entity. Concerning metaphorical dream interpretation, it can be argued that the overt content of the dream is mapped onto the latent content by resemblance or cultural convention. As regards metonymic dream interpretation, it can be said that the overt content of the dream is mapped onto the latent content by a conceptual metonymy based on socio-physical context. In addition, there are two other procedures of dream interpretation based on realistic representation and the technique of reversion. These cases do not apply figurative devices like metaphor and metonymy. Also, the dreamer’s personal knowledge of his or her life does not play a significant role in the discourse of dream interpretation in Islamic-Iranian culture

    Sulu Çözeltilerden Cr(VI) Gideriminde Alüminanın Rolü

    This paper presents the adsorption characteristics for the removal of Cr (VI) from aqueous solutions using alumina obtained from Etibank Aluminum Plant. In order to define the optimum conditions, the effects of contact time, activation process, pH of solution, initial concentration, adsorbent dose and salinity on the removal of Cr (VI) have been investigated. It is shown that the Freundlich Isotherm Model adequately described batch adsorption data. Although the removal percentage of Cr(VI) on activated alumina under optimal conditions is high, in practice, it could not be used as a potential sorbent for removal of Cr(VI) because high dose of adsorbent.Bu makale, Etibank Alüminyum Fabrikasından temin edilen alumina ile sulu çözeltilerden Cr(VI) giderimi için adsorpsiyon karakteristiklerini sunmaktadır. Optimum şartları tayin etmek amacıyla, temas süresinin, aktivas-yon prosesinin, çözelti pH’nın başlangıç konsantrasyonunun, adsorbent dozajının ve tuzluluğun Cr(VI) giderimin-deki etkisi incelenmiştir. Freundlich İzoterm Modelinin adsorpsiyon verilerini oldukça iyi tanımladığı görülmüştür. Optimum şartlarda Cr(VI)’nın aktif alumina üzerindeki giderim yüzdesi yüksek olmasına rağmen, yüksek adsorbent dozajı gerektirdiğinden uygulamada Cr(VI) giderimi için potansiyel bir sorbent olarak kullanılamaz

    Metaphor in Translation: Cognitive Perspectives on Omar Khayyam’s Poetry as Rendered into English and Kurdish

    As cognitive linguistics puts it, metaphor as a cognitive phenomenon can not be relegated to linguistic expression. Therefore, in order to analyze metaphor in translation, cognitive translation hypothesis investigates its translatability and metaphorical equivalence at the conceptual level. However, in such case, the conceptual metaphor is dealt with without considering its significant relationship to the cultural models. Based on Cienki’s theory (1999) postulating that the relation of the conceptual metaphor to the cultural model is similar to that of a profile to a base, and that the possibility of the interpretation and production of the conceptual metaphor depends on the cultural model, the present research reinvestigates the cognitive translation hypothesis from this perspective. The research findings reveal that translators have mostly been successful in translating metaphors dependent on shared cultural models, however, have failed to recreate metaphors dependent on non-shared cultural models. Accordingly, same mapping condition and different mapping condition are strongly dependent on the relationship between metaphors and cultural models.     Measurement of Mode Patterns in a High-Power Microwave Cavity

    A wet thermal paper method for measuring of mode patterns and heat distributions in a high-power microwave multimode cavity is developed. The exposure time of the paper is evaluated. It is shown that this method allows measuring and recording mode patterns in the loaded and unloaded cavity, and the heat distribution inside the cavity with a load movement. The mode patterns and heat distributions along horizontal and vertical planes of the cavity are presented. Possible applications of the method in medicine and biology are discussed, and a calibration protocol of a microwave oven for microwave radiation exposure on cell cultures in the cavity is given

    Effects of Mixture Rates and Cutting Dates on the Forage Yield and Quality of Vetch-Triticale Mixtures and Their Seed Yields Under Lowland Conditions of Cukurova

    This study was conducted to determine the effects of mixture rates and cutting dates on the forage yield and quality of vetch-triticale mixtures. Mixtures containing 50% vetch + 50% triticale or 25% vetch + 75 % triticale can be preferred for a high forage yield and the cutting should be performed at the beginning of the pod stage in terms of herbage and hay yield unless there is a necessity for the early harvest. Even if 100 % triticale provided the highest yield 0.98 tonnes/ha of crude protein, the mixture with 25 % +75 % triticale giving 0.96 tonnes/ha yield or 50 % vetch+50 % triticale with 0.89 tonnes/ha yield might be preferred in order to obtain balanced forage composition. For the seed yield, 25% vetch + 75% triticale mixture (2.1 tonnes/ha triticale + 0.24 tonnes/ha vetch) had more advantage over the other mixtures. This result seems very useful when the harvest for herbage is impossible due to the unfavorable environmental conditions

    Symptom without transcendental syntax

    This paper aims at investigating the Freudian symptom as an individual anti-language involved in a semiotic antagonism towards the internal logonomic system. In Freudian-Lacanian psychoanalysis, the symptom is interpreted according to transcendental and atemporal principles. Leaving aside these principles, we argue for a social semiotic approach in which the meaning of symptom is determined by its antagonistic relationship to the logonomic system, and also by its converted link with the repressed object in a specific socio-cultural context. The symptomatic antagonism is marked by a hypocritical and ambivalent relationship with the logonomic system and the repressed entity. The duplicitous semiosis of the symptom refers to rhetorical transformations made to reach a compromise between the contradictory poles of the law and the forbidden phenomenon. As regards the relation of the symptom to subjectivity, the symptom emerges as a conjuncture in which the subject of statement is related to the subject of speaking in a conflicting way. Accordingly, the former as the replica of a legisign-subjectivity is related symptomatically to the latter as a mere sinsign not preceded by any ideological subjectivity. The symptom is like a hinge on which the opposing doors, namely consciousness and unconsciousness, turn.     Broadband, Stable, and Non-Iterative Dielectric Constant Measurement of Low-Loss Dielectric Slabs Using a Frequency-Domain Free-Space Method

    A broadband, stable, and non-iterative free-space method is proposed for dielectric constant ε′r determination of low-loss dielectric slabs from reflection-only measurements through simple calibration standards (reflect and air). It is applicable for dispersive samples and does not require thickness information. Simulations of non-disperive and dispersive samples are performed to validate our method. Dielectric constant measurements of polyethylene and Polyoxymethylene samples (9–11 GHz) are carried out to examine the accuracy of our method. IEE
