Learning Boolean Halfspaces with Small Weights from Membership Queries

We consider the problem of proper learning a Boolean Halfspace with integer weights {0,1,…,t}\{0,1,\ldots,t\} from membership queries only. The best known algorithm for this problem is an adaptive algorithm that asks nO(t5)n^{O(t^5)} membership queries where the best lower bound for the number of membership queries is ntn^t [Learning Threshold Functions with Small Weights Using Membership Queries. COLT 1999] In this paper we close this gap and give an adaptive proper learning algorithm with two rounds that asks nO(t)n^{O(t)} membership queries. We also give a non-adaptive proper learning algorithm that asks nO(t3)n^{O(t^3)} membership queries

Behaviour of the potentials due to strangeness degree of freedom in ΛΛ6_{\Lambda\Lambda}^6He hypernucleus

Fully correlated study of ΛΛ6_{\Lambda\Lambda} ^6He hypernucleus has been performed with two- and three- baryon potentials. For the S=-2 sector, various simulations of Nijmegen ΛΛ\Lambda\Lambda potential models have been used. We investigate the role of every strength of the strange sector potentials on the energy breakdown and present a crystal clear understanding of their interplay. Consistency between Λ5_\Lambda ^5He and ΛΛ6_{\Lambda\Lambda}^6He depends on the ΛN\Lambda N space-exchange strength only. Investigation limits the strength of simulated Nijmegen ΛΛ\Lambda\Lambda potential models. The study is a step forward to determine all the strengths, to reslove A=5 anomaly and to search for ΛΛ4_{\Lambda\Lambda}^4H in an authentic way.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Experimental Evaluation of the Projection-based Force Reflection Algorithms for Haptic Interaction with Virtual Environment

Haptic interaction with virtual environments is currently a major and growing area of research with a number of emerging applications, particularly in the field of robotics. Digital implementation of the virtual environments, however, introduces errors which may result in instability of the haptic displays. This thesis deals with experimental investigation of the Projection-Based Force Reflection Algorithms (PFRAs) for haptic interaction with virtual environments, focusing on their performance in terms of stability and transparency. Experiments were performed to compare the PFRA in terms of performance for both non-delayed and delayed haptic interactions with more conventional haptic rendering methods, such as the Virtual Coupling (VC) and Wave Variables (WV). The results demonstrated that the PFRA is more stable, guarantees higher levels of transparency, and is less sensitive to decrease in update rates

Ready or Not: Career Readiness Informed by the Career Thoughts Inventory

    Get PDF
There is a growing concern that recent graduates of colleges and universities are not performing up to par with employers’ standards. Research studies in career readiness have not clearly established definition nor measure of career readiness. In order to equip students with the skills needed to succeed in the work force, it is becoming increasingly important to understand the factors that hinder their career readiness. This study used the Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI) assessment as a standard measure to inform negative career thoughts or hindrances to senior students’ career readiness. Fifty-seven senior students were administered the CTI assessment and scores were analyzed comparing students on gender, ethnicity and area of study. Results suggested that senior students as a whole have higher negative career thoughts than other college students. However, there is no statistical significance between differences among the negative thoughts of seniors based on gender, ethnicity, or area of study. Career services centers must create programing and events designed to help seniors challenge and overcome their negative career thinking. Keywords: Career Readiness, Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI), negative thought

    The whistler nozzle phenomenon

    Get PDF
The whistler nozzle is a simple device which can induce jet self-excitations of controllable amplitudes and frequencies and appears highly promising for many applications involving turbulent transport, combustion and aerodynamic noise. The characteristics of this curious phenomenon are documented for different values of the controlling parameters and attempts to explain the phenomenon. It is shown that the whistler excitation results from the coupling of two independent resonance mechanisms: shear-layer tone resulting from the impingement of the pipe-exit shear layer on the collar lip, and organ-pipe resonance of the pipe-nozzle. The crucial role of the shear-layer tone in driving the organ-pipe resonance is proven by reproducing the event in pipe-ring and pipe-hole configurations in the absence of the collar. It is also shown that this phenomenon is the strongest when the self-excitation frequency matches the preferred mode of the jet
