    What do young athletes implicitly understand about psychological skills?

    One reason sport psychologists teach psychological skills is to enhance performance in sport; but the value of psychological skills for young athletes is questionable because of the qualitative and quantitative differences between children and adults in their understanding of abstract concepts such as mental skills. To teach these skills effectively to young athletes, sport psychologists need to appreciate what young athletes implicitly understand about such skills because maturational (e.g., cognitive, social) and environmental (e.g., coaches) factors can influence the progressive development of children and youth. In the present qualitative study, we explored young athletes’ (aged 10–15 years) understanding of four basic psychological skills: goal setting, mental imagery, self-talk, and relaxation. Young athletes (n = 118: 75 males and 43 females) completed an open-ended questionnaire to report their understanding of these four basic psychological skills. Compared with the older youth athletes, the younger youth athletes were less able to explain the meaning of each psychological skill. Goal setting and mental imagery were better understood than self-talk and relaxation. Based on these findings, sport psychologists should consider adapting interventions and psychoeducational programs to match young athletes’ age and developmental level

    Statistical Models of At-grade Intersection Accidents

    DTFH61-92-C-00031The objective of this research was to develop statistical models of the relationship between traffic accidents and highway geometric elements for at-grade intersections. These models also incorporated the effect of traffic control features and traffic volumes on intersection accidents. The data base used to develop the models was obtained from the California Department of Transportation. Field data were also collected for a sample of urban, four-leg, signalized intersections to provide data on additional geometric design variables and turning-movement counts that were not available from existing highway agency files. The statistical modeling approaches used in the research included Poisson, lognormal, negative binomial, and logistic regression, as well as discriminant and cluster analysis. Regression models of the relationships between accidents and intersection geometric design, traffic control, and traffic volume variables were found to explain between 16 and 38% of the variability in the accident data. However, most of that variability was explained by the traffic volume variables considered; geometric design variables accounted for only a very small additional portion of the variability. An evaluation of hard-copy police accident reports by three independent reviewers for a sample of eight urban, four-leg, signalized intersections found that only 5 to 14% of the accidents had causes that appeared to be related to geometric design features of the intersections

    Influence of age, gender and delay on overtaking dynamics

If accepted, the copy of record will be available at IET Digital Library"Overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres on two-lane rural highways. The most influential factors are related to drivers, so ITS and assistance systems are not yet common. This research is based on experimental data of overtaking manoeuvres collected using an instrumented passenger car, equipped with four cameras, laser rangefinders and a global positioning service (GPS) tracker. This vehicle was driven along four different road segments in the surroundings of Valencia (Spain) at a speed slightly slower than the operating speed of each segment. Overtaking time and speeds were measured. Unlike previous work, the influence of human factor was also considered. Age and gender of overtaking driver, as well as time spent following were used to characterise this influence. More than 200 manoeuvres were recorded and the influence of driver characteristics and delay on gap acceptance, manoeuvre duration and speed differences have been analysed. Results show differences in behaviour between age and gender groups, since young male overtaking drivers have shown a more aggressive behaviour. Overtaking times were around 1 s lower than other drivers, whereas average speed difference was 4 km/h higher.     Effects on Safety of Pavement- Truck Tire Interaction

    DTFH61-85-C-00148A new truck tire tester was built to measure tire forces in braking and cornering under various speed, vertical load, and slip angle conditions and on different pavement surfaces. Six of the most common truck and bus tires were tested. In general, rib tires performed better than lug tires and radial tires performed better than bias-ply tires. Overall, the radial rib tire performed best, both in braking and in cornering, among the six test tires. All of the independent test variables - pavement type, vehicle speed, axle load, and slip angle - have a significant effect on tire traction. The experimental data were processed to derive 48 regression models relating peak and sliding coefficients of braking and cornering friction and critical longitudinal slip to the independent variables. A computer simulation study using the T3DRS, Phase 4 program was also conducted to investigate the effects of suspension type, tire type, roadway alignment, pavement roughness, and surface wetness on truck braking distance. The simulation results showed that trucks may require considerably larger stopping distances than passenger cars

    Modelling vehicles acceleration during overtaking manoeuvres

    [EN] Abstract: Overtaking manoeuvre is a key issue for two-lane rural roads. These roads should provide sufficient overtaking sight distance (OSD) at certain locations to allow faster vehicles to pass slower ones. However, overtaking requires occupying the opposing lane, which represents a serious safety concern. Severity of overtaking related crashes is very high, compared with other manoeuvres. The development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for overtaking is being a complex task. Only few systems have been developed, but are not still in use. This research incorporated accurate data of real manoeuvres to improve the knowledge of the phenomenon. The trajectory of the overtaking vehicles on the left lane was observed. An instrumented vehicle measured the overtaking time and distance, the abreast position, and the initial and final speed of 180 drivers that passed it during a field experiment. Six different kinematic models (such as uniform acceleration or linear variation of acceleration) were calibrated. Generally, drivers started to accelerate before changing to the opposing lane.     New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

    Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE Δ4 allele
