    Assessment and accountability: factors that influence the participation and performance of students with an emotional disturbance on a statewide accountability assessment in math

    Educational policy mandates student participation in statewide accountability assessments with the expectation that students achieve proficiency on content objectives. Demonstrating proficiency may be most difficult for students with an Emotional Disturbance (ED) who experience poor school outcomes. This study examined the participation and performance of students with ED on a regular statewide accountability assessment in math and examined the relationship between student and school level factors to student participation and performance. In the study, 34% of the students with ED participated and met proficiency standards on the regular statewide assessment in math. Student level factors examined were grade level, gender, ethnicity, and intelligence. School level factors were school-wide socioeconomic status and instructional setting for math; ethnicity, intelligence, and instructional setting associated with participation; grade level, ethnicity, and intelligence associated with performance. Level of intelligence was the only factor predictive of both participation and performance on the regular statewide accountability assessment in math

    Neuron-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Modulate Microglia Activation and Function

    Microglia act as the immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS). They play an important role in maintaining brain homeostasis but also in mediating neuroimmune responses to insult. The interactions between neurons and microglia represent a key process for neuroimmune regulation and subsequent effects on CNS integrity. However, the molecular mechanisms of neuron-glia communication in regulating microglia function are not fully understood. One recently described means of this intercellular communication is via nano-sized extracellular vesicles (EVs) that transfer a large diversity of molecules between neurons and microglia, such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. To determine the effects of neuron-derived EVs (NDEVs) on microglia, NDEVs were isolated from the culture supernatant of rat cortical neurons. When NDEVs were added to primary cultured rat microglia, we found significantly improved microglia viability via inhibition of apoptosis. Additionally, application of NDEVs to cultured microglia also inhibited the expression of activation surface markers on microglia. Furthermore, NDEVs reduced the LPS-induced proinflammatory response in microglia according to reduced gene expression of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, MCP-1) and iNOS, but increased expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokine, IL-10. These findings support that neurons critically regulate microglia activity and control inflammation via EV-mediated neuron–glia communication. (Supported by R21AA025563 and R01AA025591)

    Considerations For Implementing a Telerehabilitation Treatment Program For Individuals With Chronic Aphasia

    The purpose of this research project is to identify the considerations that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) need to review before beginning to use telerehabilitation services to treat patients with chronic aphasia. This research will specifically target therapy treatments for patients with chronic aphasia and the technology adaptations and adjustments necessary for this population. This research project includes a systematic literature review as well as an in-service presentation. As telerehabilitation will continue to develop and grow, practicing SLPs need to have a foundational understanding of what teletherapy is, the patients suitable for services, and the benefits it has the potential to provide. This research project serves to provide SLPs with the foundational information necessary when beginning to learn about telerehabilitation services

    Older Veteran Digital Disparities: Examining the Potential for Solutions Within Social Networks

    BACKGROUND: Older adults typically have less access to the Internet than other age groups, and older Veterans may use the Internet even less due to economic and geographic reasons. OBJECTIVE: To explore solutions to this problem, our study examined older Veterans\u27 reported ability to access technology through their close social ties. METHODS: Data were collected via mail survey from a sample of Veterans aged 65 years and older (N=266). RESULTS: Nearly half (44.0%, 117/266) of the sample reported having no Internet access. Yet, among those without current access, older Veterans reported having a median of 5 (IQR 7) close social ties with home Internet access. These older Veterans also reported that they would feel comfortable asking a median of 2 (IQR 4) social ties for help to access the Internet, and that a median of 2 (IQR 4) social ties would directly access the Internet for the older Veteran to help with health management. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that even older Veterans without current Internet access have at least two social ties with home Internet who could be called upon for technology support. Thus, older Veterans may be willing to call upon these surrogate seekers for technology assistance and support in health management. This has implications for the digital divide, technology design, and health care policy

    X-ray Emission from the FU Orionis Star V1735 Cygni

    The variable star V1735 Cyg (= Elias 1-12) lies in the IC 5146 dark cloud and is a member of the class of FU Orionis objects whose dramatic optical brightenings are thought to be linked to episodic accretion. We report the first X-ray detections of V1735 Cyg and a deeply-embedded class I protostar lying 24 arcsecs to its northeast. X-ray spectra obtained with EPIC on XMM-Newton reveal very high-temperature plasma (kT > 5 keV) in both objects, but no large flares. Such hard X-ray emission is not anticipated from accretion shocks and is a signature of magnetic processes. We place these new results into the context of what is presently known about the X-ray properties of FU Orionis stars and other accreting young stellar objects.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure

    Not Home Alone: Leveraging Telehealth and Informatics to Create a Lean Model for COVID-19 Patient Home Care

    In response to the emerging COVID-19 public health emergency in March 2020, the Medical University of South Carolina rapidly implemented an analytics-enhanced remote patient monitoring (RPM) program with state-wide reach for SARS-CoV-2-positive patients. Patient-reported data and other analytics were used to prioritize the sickest patients for contact by RPM nurses, enabling a small cadre of RPM nurses, with the support of ambulatory providers and urgent care video visits, to oversee 1234 patients, many of whom were older, from underserved populations, or at high risk of serious complications. Care was escalated based on prespecified criteria to primary care provider or emergency department visit, with 89% of moderate- to high-risk patients treated solely at home. The RPM nurses facilitated the continuity of care during escalation or de-escalation of care, provided much-needed emotional support to patients quarantining at home and helped find medical homes for patients with tenuous ties to health care

    Cellular and molecular pathogenesis of Salmonid alphavirus 1 in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L

    Salmonid alphaviruses (SAV) are a group of viruses that have recently emerged as a serious threat to the salmonid aquaculture industry in Europe. Over recent years, diseases caused by SAV have severely hampered the Scottish, Irish and Norwegian Atlantic salmon industry, and are considered to be among the major economically important viral diseases affecting the industry at present. Amongst the six subtypes characterised so far, Salmonid alphavirus 1 (SAV1) causes severe pathology in the heart, pancreas and the skeletal muscle of Atlantic salmon leading to death and growth retardation in the affected fish. The biochemical characteristics of the virus and the sequential pathology of the diseases caused by SAV have been described; however the mechanisms responsible for causing the disease and the host defence mechanisms against the virus are poorly defined. This thesis therefore examined the pathogenesis of SAV infection at the cellular and molecular level in vivo in salmon and in vitro in salmonid cells, with a special emphasis on host immune defence mechanisms against the virus. SAV was first isolated from Chinook salmon embryo-214 (CHSE-214) cells in 1995 in Ireland. Several cell lines have since been used to grow the virus. In the present study, three established salmonid cell lines, Chum salmon heart -1 (CHH-1), CHSE-214 and Salmon head kidney -1 (SHK-1) were evaluated for their ability to support the isolation of SAV-1 from infected fish tissue, with CHH-1 cells giving the fastest cytopathic effect (CPE) during primary isolation. The CPE appeared as localised cell-rounding on CHH-1 and CHSE-214 cells, although in SHK-1 cells, the cells were seen to slough off the monolayer relatively later than with the other two cell lines during the infection. The host response to SAV infection was evaluated by experimentally infecting Atlantic salmon parr using a cell culture-adapted virus isolate. A quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was developed to examine the virus load in the fish, from which it was found that the highest viral RNA copy number was detected at 5 day post infection (d.p.i), of the 90 day experimental infection period. Characteristic pathological lesions were only seen in the pancreas and the heart but not in the skeletal muscles of the infected fish. A gene expression study using qRT-PCR revealed the rapid induction of interferon (INF) and INF-associated genes in the head kidney of the infected fish compared to the control fish. The Mx protein was found to be highly expressed in the heart and the mucous membranes of infected fish by immunohistochemistry. Interestingly, the pathological changes that were seen occurred some time after the peak expression of genes associated with the INF-1-pathway. When the host-virus interaction of Atlantic salmon infected with SAV was examined using a microarray, a potent first line defence response was observed, together with the signatures of early activation of the adaptive immune response during the initial stages of the infection. Genes associated with transcription, translation and lipid metabolism were significantly differentially expressed in virus infected fish compared to control fish. A large array of antiviral genes was significantly expressed, amongst which were some of the genes also described in mammalian alphavirus infections. Genes associated with apoptosis and anti-apoptosis were also seen to be differentially regulated showing the complexity of the host-virus interaction. Collectively, all of these findings suggest that a non-specific antiviral immune response takes place providing rapid immune protection during the early stages of SAV infection in salmon. In the study on morphogenesis of SAV in salmonid cells using electron microscopy (EM), a rapid internalization of virus into the cells and generation of replication complexes using the secretory pathway of the cell, similar to mammalian alphavirus replication was observed. The mature viruses were released through surface projections, acquiring envelopes from the host cell membrane. From the ultrastructural studies of the salmonid cells infected with SAV, a progressive chromatin marginalisation and condensation could be seen, leading to cellular fragmentation, forming membrane bound apoptotic bodies, characteristic of progressive apoptosis. The activation of caspase-3 in the cytoplasm and genomic DNA damage were also seen in the infected fish cells, indicating that apoptosis is the main cause of cell death during SAV infection. The results of this study have increased our knowledge and understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of SAV infection, emphasising the importance of the first line defence mechanisms against SAV infection in salmon.     Patterns of human exposure to malaria vectors in Zanzibar and implications for malaria elimination efforts

    Zanzibar provides a good case study for malaria elimination. The islands have experienced a dramatic reduction in malaria burden since the introduction of effective vector control interventions and case management. Malaria prevalence has now been maintained below 1% for the past decade and the islands can feasibly aim for elimination.; To better understand factors that may contribute to remaining low-level malaria transmission in Zanzibar, layered human behavioural and entomological research was conducted between December 2016 and December 2017 in 135 randomly selected households across six administrative wards. The study included: (1) household surveys, (2) structured household observations of nighttime activity and sleeping patterns, and (3) paired indoor and outdoor mosquito collections. Entomological and human behavioural data were integrated to provide weighted estimates of exposure to vector bites, accounting for proportions of people indoors or outdoors, and protected by insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) each hour of the night.; Overall, 92% of female Anopheles mosquitoes were caught in the rainy season compared to 8% in the dry season and 72% were caught outdoors compared to 28% indoors. For individual ITN users, ITNs prevented an estimated two-thirds (66%) of exposure to vector bites and nearly three quarters (73%) of residual exposure was estimated to occur outdoors. Based on observed levels of ITN use in the study sites, the population-wide mean personal protection provided by ITNs was 42%.; This study identified gaps in malaria prevention in Zanzibar with results directly applicable for improving ongoing programme activities. While overall biting risk was low, the most notable finding was that current levels of ITN use are estimated to prevent less than half of exposure to malaria vector bites. Variation in ITN use across sites and seasons suggests that additional gains could be made through targeted social and behaviour change interventions. However, even for ITN users, gaps in protection remain, with a majority of exposure to vector bites occurring outdoors before going to sleep. Supplemental interventions targeting outdoor exposure to malaria vectors, and groups that may be at increased risk of exposure to malaria vectors, should be explored

    The remnants of galaxy formation from a panoramic survey of the region around M31

    In hierarchical cosmological models, galaxies grow in mass through the continual accretion of smaller ones. The tidal disruption of these systems is expected to result in loosely bound stars surrounding the galaxy, at distances that reach 10−10010 - 100 times the radius of the central disk. The number, luminosity and morphology of the relics of this process provide significant clues to galaxy formation history, but obtaining a comprehensive survey of these components is difficult because of their intrinsic faintness and vast extent. Here we report a panoramic survey of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). We detect stars and coherent structures that are almost certainly remnants of dwarf galaxies destroyed by the tidal field of M31. An improved census of their surviving counterparts implies that three-quarters of M31's satellites brighter than MV<−6M_V < -6 await discovery. The brightest companion, Triangulum (M33), is surrounded by a stellar structure that provides persuasive evidence for a recent encounter with M31. This panorama of galaxy structure directly confirms the basic tenets of the hierarchical galaxy formation model and reveals the shared history of M31 and M33 in the unceasing build-up of galaxies.Comment: Published in Nature.
