    Business as Service? Human Relations and the British Interwar Management Movement

    This is the author accepted manuscriptTo what extent should business have an implication of service when its fundamental purpose is profit-seeking? We explore this issue through a contextually informed reappraisal of British interwar management thinking (1918-1939), drawing on rich archival material concerning the Rowntree business lectures and management research groups. Whereas existing literature is framed around scientific management versus human relations schools, we find a third pronounced, related theme: business as service. Our main contribution is to identify the origins in Britain of the discourse of corporate social responsibility in the guise of business as service. We show that this emerged earlier than commonly assumed and was imbued with an instrumental intent from its inception as a form of management control. This was a discourse emanating not from management theorists but from management practitioners, striving to put the corporate system on a sustainable footing while safeguarding the power, authority, and legitimacy of incumbent managerial elites.Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC

    Methodological Openness in Business History Research: Looking Afresh at the British Interwar Management Movement

It is only relatively recently, however, that attempts have been made to articulate methodological issues in a more epistemologically explicit and reflexive fashion. This article contributes to this burgeoning agenda by examining the methodology underpinning an intensive archival study of the British interwar management movement (1918-1939), a major force in British management education between the wars. We explicate the methodology employed and question what this material tells us about the interwar management movement, in terms of its determination to modernize management, encourage openness between firms, and extend a new spirit of partnership. We show that the interwar management movement was characterized by organized cooperation and methodological openness. Our main contribution is to demonstrate that interpretations themselves can become entrenched and prone to inertia, inviting us to revisit these periodically and, if appropriate, recast them.Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC

    A monitoring and control system for an accelerated weather test chamber

    In the Automotive Sector, weathering tests of components are of paramount importance. The most critical components to the overall comfort and durability of a vehicle are the interior components and thus is important to guarantee the quality of these components. The interior components are generally made of plastic, fabric, leather and various painted components. These components are prone to fading, cracking and distortion which is caused by natural factors such as solar radiation, temperature and moisture. This is known as natural weathering. Over the years many weathering tests have been carried out on automotive components to address critical issues during the design process. Many of these tests are simulated in chambers to mimic real life cycles. Although these accelerated tests provide somewhat accurate results in much shorter periods, natural weathering is still essential as it is uncontrolled and unpredictable. This dissertation looks at the method of a metallic chamber used to carry out weathering tests on automotive components and to simulate the conditions inside a vehicle. It addresses the current state and improvement: accurate tracking, intelligent fuzzy logic control and cloud-based monitoring. Currently weather testing chambers are stationery, which does not allow for maximum exposer to solar radiation. Therefore, a system was designed to allow the weather testing chamber to track the azimuth and elevation of the sun to increase the solar radiation on the components tested, a GPS will achieve this. Currently systems lack remote monitoring. A further shortcoming is the lack of controlling the temperature and humidity inside the chamber for sufficient tests. The use of a fuzzy logic controller was implemented to achieve this. The fuzzy logic was compared to other types of logic controllers. To further IoT integration, two main control devices were used, these control devices were two Arduino Mega’s. One Arduino Mega was used for the intelligent fuzzy logic control and the second for solar tracking. The weathering system and controllers were powered by using solar power. The fuzzy logic controller was tested while tracking the sun and then not tracking the sun. The results obtained were compared and it was seen that the fuzzy logic performed very well in both instances, however, the test with tracking the sun performed better. A second test was performed. The second test was similar to the previously mentioned test, but the fuzzy logic had a set point control. It was concluded that both tests performed as expected as the fuzzy logic controlled the temperature and humidity at the given setpoint, but during the solar tracking test the fuzzy logic control performed the best. The fuzzy logic worked well in general use as well as set point control, both for tracking and non-tracking. The tracking performed better than the non-tracking

    Utilising identifier error variation in linkage of large administrative data sources.

    BACKGROUND: Linkage of administrative data sources often relies on probabilistic methods using a set of common identifiers (e.g. sex, date of birth, postcode). Variation in data quality on an individual or organisational level (e.g. by hospital) can result in clustering of identifier errors, violating the assumption of independence between identifiers required for traditional probabilistic match weight estimation. This potentially introduces selection bias to the resulting linked dataset. We aimed to measure variation in identifier error rates in a large English administrative data source (Hospital Episode Statistics; HES) and to incorporate this information into match weight calculation. METHODS: We used 30,000 randomly selected HES hospital admissions records of patients aged 0-1, 5-6 and 18-19 years, for 2011/2012, linked via NHS number with data from the Personal Demographic Service (PDS; our gold-standard). We calculated identifier error rates for sex, date of birth and postcode and used multi-level logistic regression to investigate associations with individual-level attributes (age, ethnicity, and gender) and organisational variation. We then derived: i) weights incorporating dependence between identifiers; ii) attribute-specific weights (varying by age, ethnicity and gender); and iii) organisation-specific weights (by hospital). Results were compared with traditional match weights using a simulation study. RESULTS: Identifier errors (where values disagreed in linked HES-PDS records) or missing values were found in 0.11% of records for sex and date of birth and in 53% of records for postcode. Identifier error rates differed significantly by age, ethnicity and sex (p < 0.0005). Errors were less frequent in males, in 5-6 year olds and 18-19 year olds compared with infants, and were lowest for the Asian ethic group. A simulation study demonstrated that substantial bias was introduced into estimated readmission rates in the presence of identifier errors. Attribute- and organisational-specific weights reduced this bias compared with weights estimated using traditional probabilistic matching algorithms. CONCLUSIONS: We provide empirical evidence on variation in rates of identifier error in a widely-used administrative data source and propose a new method for deriving match weights that incorporates additional data attributes. Our results demonstrate that incorporating information on variation by individual-level characteristics can help to reduce bias due to linkage error

    Probabilistic linkage to enhance deterministic algorithms and reduce data linkage errors in hospital administrative data.

    BACKGROUND: The pseudonymisation algorithm used to link together episodes of care belonging to the same patients in England (HESID) has never undergone any formal evaluation, to determine the extent of data linkage error. OBJECTIVE: To quantify improvements in linkage accuracy from adding probabilistic linkage to existing deterministic HESID algorithms. METHODS: Inpatient admissions to NHS hospitals in England (Hospital Episode Statistics, HES) over 17 years (1998 to 2015) for a sample of patients (born 13/28th of months in 1992/1998/2005/2012). We compared the existing deterministic algorithm with one that included an additional probabilistic step, in relation to a reference standard created using enhanced probabilistic matching with additional clinical and demographic information. Missed and false matches were quantified and the impact on estimates of hospital readmission within one year were determined. RESULTS: HESID produced a high missed match rate, improving over time (8.6% in 1998 to 0.4% in 2015). Missed matches were more common for ethnic minorities, those living in areas of high socio-economic deprivation, foreign patients and those with 'no fixed abode'. Estimates of the readmission rate were biased for several patient groups owing to missed matches, which was reduced for nearly all groups. CONCLUSION: Probabilistic linkage of HES reduced missed matches and bias in estimated readmission rates, with clear implications for commissioning, service evaluation and performance monitoring of hospitals. The existing algorithm should be modified to address data linkage error, and a retrospective update of the existing data would address existing linkage errors and their implications

This expanded knowledge base now captures information on 334 bidentate ligands and has been processed with principal component analysis (PCA) of the descriptors to produce a detailed map of bidentate ligand space, which better captures ligand variation and has been used for the analysis of ligand properties

    Management Learning in Historical Perspective: Rediscovering Rowntree and the British Interwar Management Movement

The final version is available from Academy of Management via the DOI in this record.British interwar management (1918-1939) has been criticized as overly conservative, comprising a core of progressive firms amidst a mass of conservatively-run, family-dominated businesses. According to the dominant narrative, British firms exhibited little interest in new managerial approaches. Our study of the Rowntree business lectures and British interwar management movement challenges this view; suggesting British managers displayed greater openness to innovation than is commonly recognized. We uncover and analyse a network of British firms engaged in management education through organized peer-to-peer communication, facilitated by lectures and management research groups initiated by Seebohm Rowntree. Our primary contribution to the literature is to offer a more nuanced perspective on the evolution of British management learning in the interwar years. This reveals dynamic knowledge networks reflexively engaged in advancing and codifying practice-based learning to promote the diffusion of effective solutions to shared problems – building communities of practice, codifying management knowledge, and drawing on an ethos of ‘business as service’. By undertaking archival research to create a coherent body of documentary material, and making this available to others, we also make a methodological contribution, creating a new ‘space’ for future researchers to explore, from which they can write new management histories of their own.Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC
