    The Implications of Executive Function and Prototypical Student Performance in Middle School

    Over the course of the past 25 years, “executive functions” have been investigated more and more frequently in relation to cognitive functioning across the lifespan. Within that time frame, researchers have examined various changes that are specific to the adolescent brain. The research has begun to elucidate the relationship between executive functioning and the developmental period of adolescence. Previous studies have examined the utility of using specific rating scales as a means to assess executive functioning across the lifespan, with most of these utilizing scale level analyses. Given the lack of specificity regarding what elements exactly comprise “executive functioning,” the literature has failed to produce specific, behavioral descriptors that would make more tailored interventions possible. The present study sought to extrapolate, further the specific behaviors that were rated to be most frequently endorsed for prototypical students. More specifically, the present study further examined teachers‟ ratings of academically successful and academically unsuccessful students, based on the endorsements on the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) utilized by Bobik (2008). Results of the present study suggest that academically successful students demonstrate less difficulty with executive functions than do academically unsuccessful student

    The Scattering Properties of Natural Terrestrial Snows versus Icy Satellite Surfaces

    Our comparisons of the single particle scattering behavior of terrestrial snows and icy satellite regoliths to the laboratory particle scattering measurements of McGuire and Hapke demonstrate that the differences between icy satellite regoliths and their terrestrial counterparts are due to particle structures and textures. Terrestrial snow particle structures define a region in the single particle scattering function parameter space separate from the regions defined by the McGuire and Hapke artificial laboratory particles. The particle structures and textures of the grains composing icy satellites regoliths are not simple or uniform but consist of a variety of particle structure and texture types, some of which may be a combination of the particle types investigated by McGuire and Hapke

    ENDOPARASITES OF GREATER SANDHILL CRANES IN SOUTH-CENTRAL WISCONSIN

    Windingstad and Trainer (1977) used both fecal sampling and postmortem examinations to document the occurrence of parasites in greater sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis tabida) from Wisconsin in the fall. We conducted repeated fecal sampling of a well-known population to expand on results of their study. Our objective was to determine whether seasonal differences exist in the prevalence of endoparasites of Wisconsin sandhill cranes. We collected 7 to 10 fecal samples approximately every other week from a consistent roost site on the Wisconsin River (43°34\u2752.99\u27\u27N, 89°36\u2738.42\u27\u27W) near Briggsville, Wisconsin, from 29 May through 25 September 2008. The sample size was based on the assumption that endoparasite prevalence in this population was high: a single positive result would allow us to be 99% certain that the parasite was prevalent in 50% or greater of the crane population (Martin et al. 1987). Each anonymously collected fecal sample consisted of a single, fresh mass. Samples were collected into plastic bags and kept refrigerated until analysis (2-24 hours later). Three methods were used to detect parasites: a standard direct smear of feces in saline, fecal flotation in sodium nitrate solution (Ovatector, BGS Medical Products, Inc, Venice, FL.) (Greiner 1997), and examination of the uppermost layer of sediment 10 minutes following mixing of the sample with sodium nitrate

    A pilot evaluation of social needs among gynecologic oncology patients in inpatient versus outpatient settings

    The WHO defines social determinants of health (SDoH) as the conditions in which we are born, grow, work, and live as well as other large systems that positively or negatively affect our health. Many healthcare systems currently lack the resources and strategies required to accurately assess and address SDoH. Action must be taken because studies have found that chronic diseases, including cancer, are affected by SDoH. The aim of this study is to identify the incidence of social needs in an inpatient gynecologic oncology population and its relation to patient demographics and clinical diagnostic data to guide and inform future intervention. Patients agreeing to participate in the study completed a needs assessment survey during their inpatient stay at the hospital between November 2020 to March 2021. The survey contained seven questions, six of which were questions screening for social needs including food and housing security, transportation means, financial stability, health literacy, and social support. Responses were considered positive if any degree of need was reported. Demographic and cancer diagnosis data were then collected and included zip code, race, cancer stage and age at diagnosis, treatment history, and number of hospital admissions and length of stay over the past 12 months. The most substantial reported needs across all gynecologic malignancies were social support (65%), health literacy (37%), and financial need (22%). Less need was reported in the categories of food (11%), housing (7%), and transportation (4%). SDoH have been studied in the outpatient gynecologic population and the needs seen in this study are similar to the needs of that population. However, there are likely different challenges and frequencies of unmet need in the different types of gynecologic cancers that may affect the stage at which their cancer is diagnosed as well as the number of hospital admissions related to their cancer care

    The CYP2D6 gene is responsible for the majority of tamoxifen metabolism. Recent compelling, yet limited data have determined that postmenopausal women who carry a functional polymorphism in the CYP2D6 gene have a worse clinical outcome than women who have a wild-type genotype. In this commentary we discuss the level of evidence needed to change clinical practice and whether CYP2D6 genotyping is appropriate for all women considering tamoxifen as part of their adjuvant therapy

    Relative navigation for spacecraft formation flying

    The Goddard Space Flight Center Guidance, Navigation, and Control Center (GNCC) is currently developing and implementing advanced satellite systems to provide autonomous control of formation flyers. The initial formation maintenance capability will be flight-demonstrated on the Earth-Orbiter-1 (EO-1) satellite, which is planned under the National Aeronautics and Space Administration New Millennium Program to be a coflight with the Landsat-7 (L-7) satellite. Formation flying imposes relative navigation accuracy requirements in addition to the orbit accuracy requirements for the individual satellites. In the case of EO-1 and L-7, the two satellites are in nearly coplanar orbits, with a small difference in the longitude of the ascending node to compensate for the Earth's rotation. The GNCC has performed trajectory error analysis for the relative navigation of the EO-1/L-7 formation, as well as for a more advanced tracking configuration using cross-link satellite communications. This paper discusses the orbit determination and prediction accuracy achievable for EO-1 and L-7 under various tracking and orbit determination scenarios and discusses the expected relative separation errors in their formation flying configuration

    Dying To Find Out: The Cost of Time at the Dawn of the Multicancer Early Detection Era

    Cancer is a significant burden worldwide that adversely impacts life expectancy, quality of life, health care costs, and workforce productivity. Although currently recommended screening tests for individual cancers reduce mortality, they detect only a minority of all cancers and sacrifice specificity for high sensitivity, resulting in a high cumulative rate of false positives. Blood-based multicancer early detection tests (MCED) based on next-generation sequencing (NGS) and other technologies hold promise for broadening the number of cancer types detected in screened populations and hope for reducing cancer mortality. The promise of this new technology to improve cancer detection rates and make screening more efficient at the population level demands the development of novel trial designs that accelerate clinical adoption. Carefully designed clinical trials are needed to address these issues
