Self-stabilizing uncoupled dynamics
Dynamics in a distributed system are self-stabilizing if they are guaranteed
to reach a stable state regardless of how the system is initialized. Game
dynamics are uncoupled if each player's behavior is independent of the other
players' preferences. Recognizing an equilibrium in this setting is a
distributed computational task. Self-stabilizing uncoupled dynamics, then, have
both resilience to arbitrary initial states and distribution of knowledge. We
study these dynamics by analyzing their behavior in a bounded-recall
synchronous environment. We determine, for every "size" of game, the minimum
number of periods of play that stochastic (randomized) players must recall in
order for uncoupled dynamics to be self-stabilizing. We also do this for the
special case when the game is guaranteed to have unique best replies. For
deterministic players, we demonstrate two self-stabilizing uncoupled protocols.
One applies to all games and uses three steps of recall. The other uses two
steps of recall and applies to games where each player has at least four
available actions. For uncoupled deterministic players, we prove that a single
step of recall is insufficient to achieve self-stabilization, regardless of the
number of available actions
Age and growth of Mugil cephalus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Perciformes: Mugilidae) in Bonny Estuary
The age and growth of Mugil cephalus was investigated in Bonny Estuary, Nigeria, from January, 1995 to December, 1996. Length-weight relationships were isometric with length exponents of 2.84 (males), 2.90 (females) and 2.88 (overall). Modal length at age were 12.0cm, 20.9cm, 25.0cm, 28.4cm and 30.2cm TL for ages 0+, 1+, 2+, 3+ and 4+ respectively. Corresponding total weights were 20.01g, 78.93g, 173.12g, 217.61g and 247.50g, respectively. Asymptotic length (Lo) was estimated 33.2cm TL, asymptotic weight (W sub(o)) was 484g, growth coefficient K=0.55847 super(-1) and hypothetical age at zero length To = 0.152yr. Longevity, Tmax, was 5.0yr, length and weight growth performance indices were Q super(1)=2.79 and Q = 1.44, respectively. Total mortality, natural mortality and fishing mortality were z = 1.02yr super(-1), M=0.607yr super(-1) and F=O. 3129yr super(-1), respectively. The exploitation ratio E was 0.4048 and exploitation rate U = 0.2302yr super(-1
Magnetic monopole clusters, and monopole dominance after smoothing in the maximally Abelian gauge of SU(2)
In the maximally Abelian gauge of SU(2), the clusters of monopole current are
found to divide into two distinct classes. The largest cluster permeates the
lattice, has a density that scales and produces the string tension. The
remaining clusters possess an approximate 1/l^3 number density distribution (l
is the cluster length), their radii vary as \sqrt l and their total current
density does not scale. Their contribution to the string tension is compatible
with being exactly zero. Their number density can be thought of as arising from
an underlying scale invariant distribution. This suggests that they are not
related to instantons. We also observe that when we locally smoothen the SU(2)
fields by cooling, the string tension due to monopoles becomes much smaller
than the SU(2) string tension. This dramatic loss of Abelian/monopole dominance
occurs even after just one cooling step.Comment: Talk presented at LATTICE97(topology). LaTeX, with 4 PS figure
Existential muck: Romantic borderlessness and dissolving dualisms in Schiller's die Räuber
The essay investigates Romantic tendencies in Schiller's inaugural drama, Die Räuber [The Robbers]. The play's overt discourse of dualism and exchange rests on a more viscous foundation of existential muck. Franz von Moor's "morastige Zirkel der menschlichen Bestimmung" [muckish cycle of human determination] is a cyclical solvent that engulfs the play's dualisms and dissolves opposition and exchange. Forms rise from the muck, taking on borders (dimensions, limits) and they descend back into the muck, becoming once more borderless. This may be the other side of an all-encompassing Freude [Joy], both originary and terminal, yet as "alle Menschen werden Brüder" [all people become brothers], we are reminded of what it means to be brothers in the Moor clan. As a belated product of the proto-Romanticism of the Sturm und Drang, Schiller's 1781 play is a specimen of retro-proto-Romanticism

Between 2007-2012 AIR worked with Islington Council Arts Team and the Archway Town Centre Management Group to commission new works that explored a perceived darkness in Archway. Anna Hart produced the four commissions: Hillary Powell 'Light Years Away', Jane Watt 'Trip the Light Fantastic', David Batchelor 'Big Rock Candy Fountain', Ruth Ewan 'How to Make Archway Tower Disappear'
