    A multivariate variational objective analysis-assimilation method. Part 1: Development of the basic model

    The variational method of undetermined multipliers is used to derive a multivariate model for objective analysis. The model is intended for the assimilation of 3-D fields of rawinsonde height, temperature and wind, and mean level temperature observed by satellite into a dynamically consistent data set. Relative measurement errors are taken into account. The dynamic equations are the two nonlinear horizontal momentum equations, the hydrostatic equation, and an integrated continuity equation. The model Euler-Lagrange equations are eleven linear and/or nonlinear partial differential and/or algebraic equations. A cyclical solution sequence is described. Other model features include a nonlinear terrain-following vertical coordinate that eliminates truncation error in the pressure gradient terms of the horizontal momentum equations and easily accommodates satellite observed mean layer temperatures in the middle and upper troposphere. A projection of the pressure gradient onto equivalent pressure surfaces removes most of the adverse impacts of the lower coordinate surface on the variational adjustment

    Preferential Remedies for Employment Discrimination

    A basic thesis of this article is that much of the current concern about alleged reverse discrimination in employment ignores the reality of the situation. In Part I it will be contended that although color blindness is a laudable long-run objective, it alone will not end discrimination; thus, it will be argued that some form of color conscious affirmative action must be employed in order to achieve equal employment opportunity for minorities and women. The most effective form of affirmative action is temporary preferential treatment, and it will be asserted in Part II that such relief can be justified under the Constitution. Similarly, in Part m, it will be argued that preferential remedies can be justified under present statutory provisions governing employment discrimination. Finally, in Part IV, two conclusions will be drawn: first, that while it is accurate to suggest that some minority persons or women who currently benefit from preferential remedies might not have been hired but for their race or sex, this does not mean that these individuals are not qualified, and second, that the opponents of preferential remedies have grossly exaggerated the impact of such remedies by failing to recognize that, in reality, the cases in which preferential remedies have been ordered have generally involved small numbers of positions and have imposed the remedy for relatively short periods of time. Before proceeding, however, it is necessary to point out that this article will take a broad approach, sometimes sacrificing specificity in an attempt to provide an overview to the problem of preferential remedies. It is hoped that this overview will demonstrate that the true value of the preferential remedy is in raising the consciousness of the community and encouraging voluntary affirmative action programs that will, by putting people together in the workplace, teach that all are equal

    We find that a column of glass beads exhibits a well-defined transition between two phases that differ in their resistance to shear. Pulses of fluidization are used to prepare static states with well-defined particle volume fractions ϕ\phi in the range 0.57-0.63.     Enrollment in YFV Vaccine Trial: An Evaluation of Recruitment Outcomes Associated with a Randomized Controlled Double-Blind Trial of a Live Attenuated Yellow Fever Vaccine

    This investigation evaluated several factors associated with diverse participant enrollment of a clinical trial assessing safety, immunogenicity, and comparative viremia associated with administration of 17-D live, attenuated yellow fever vaccine given alone or in combination with human immune globulin. We obtained baseline participant information (e.g., sociodemographic, medical) and followed recruitment outcomes from 2005 to 2007. Of 355 potential Yellow Fever vaccine study participants, 231 cases were analyzed. Strong interest in study participation was observed among racial and ethnically diverse persons with 36.34% eligible following initial study screening, resulting in 18.75% enrollment. The percentage of white participants increased from 63.66% (prescreened sample) to 81.25% (enrollment group). The regression model was significant with white race as a predictor of enrollment (OR=2.744, 95% CI=1.415-5.320, p=0.003).In addition, persons were more likely to enroll via direct outreach and referral mechanisms compared to mass advertising (OR=2.433, 95% CI=1.102-5.369). The findings indicate that racially diverse populations can be recruited to vaccine clinical trials, yet actual enrollment may not reflect that diversit

    Haem acquisition is facilitated by a novel receptor Hma and required by uropathogenic Escherichia coli for kidney infection

    Iron acquisition, mediated by specific outer membrane receptors, is critical for colonization of the urinary tract by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). The role of specific iron sources in vivo , however, remains largely unknown. In this study, we identified a 79 kDa haem receptor, h ae m a cquisition protein Hma, and established that it functions independently of ChuA to mediate haemin uptake by UPEC strain CFT073. We demonstrated that expression of hma promotes TonB-dependent haemin utilization and the Hma protein binds haemin with high affinity ( K d  = 8 μM). Hma, however, lacks conserved His residues shown to mediate haem uptake by other bacterial receptors. In contrast, we identified Tyr-126 as a residue necessary for Hma-mediated haemin utilization. In a murine co-infection model of UTI, an isogenic hma mutant was out-competed by wild-type CFT073 in the kidneys ( P  < 0.001) and spleens ( P  <  0.0001) of infected mice, indicating its expression provided a competitive advantage in these organs. Furthermore, a hma chuA double mutant, which is unable to utilize haemin, was unable to colonize the kidneys to wild-type levels during independent infection ( P  = 0.02).     Dynamics of drag and force distributions for projectile impact in a granular medium

    Our experiments and molecular dynamics simulations on a projectile penetrating a two-dimensional granular medium reveal that the mean deceleration of the projectile is constant and proportional to the impact velocity. Thus, the time taken for a projectile to decelerate to a stop is independent of its impact velocity. The simulations show that the probability distribution function of forces on grains is time-independent during a projectile's penetration of the medium. At all times the force distribution function decreases exponentially for large forces.Comment: 4 page

    Spitzer Observations of the z=2.73 Lensed Lyman Break Galaxy, MS1512-cB58

    We present Spitzer infrared (IR) photometry and spectroscopy of the lensed Lyman break galaxy (LBG), MS1512-cB58 at z=2.73. The large (factor ~30) magnification allows for the most detailed infrared study of an L*_UV(z=3) LBG to date. Broadband photometry with IRAC (3-10 micron), IRS (16 micron), and MIPS (24, 70 & 160 micron) was obtained as well as IRS spectroscopy spanning 5.5-35 microns. A fit of stellar population models to the optical/near-IR/IRAC photometry gives a young age (~9 Myr), forming stars at ~98 M_sun/yr, with a total stellar mass of ~10^9 M_sun formed thus far. The existence of an old stellar population with twice the stellar mass can not be ruled out. IR spectral energy distribution fits to the 24 and 70 micron photometry, as well as previously obtained submm/mm, data give an intrinsic IR luminosity L_IR = 1-2 x10^11 L_sun and a star formation rate, SFR ~20-40 M_sun/yr. The UV derived star formation rate (SFR) is ~3-5 times higher than the SFR determined using L_IR or L_Halpha because the red UV spectral slope is significantly over predicting the level of dust extinction. This suggests that the assumed Calzetti starburst obscuration law may not be valid for young LBGs. We detect strong line emission from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) at 6.2, 7.7, and 8.6 microns. The line ratios are consistent with ratios observed in both local and high redshift starbursts. Both the PAH and rest-frame 8 micron luminosities predict the total L_IR based on previously measured relations in starbursts. Finally, we do not detect the 3.3 micron PAH feature. This is marginally inconsistent with some PAH emission models, but still consistent with PAH ratios measured in many local star-forming galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. aastex format, 18 pages, 7 figure

    Correlation between Voronoi volumes in disc packings

    We measure the two-point correlation of free Voronoi volumes in binary disc packings, where the packing fraction ϕavg\phi_{\rm avg} ranges from 0.8175 to 0.8380. We observe short-ranged correlations over the whole range of ϕavg\phi_{\rm avg} and anti-correlations for ϕavg>0.8277\phi_{\rm avg}>0.8277. The spatial extent of the anti-correlation increases with ϕavg\phi_{\rm avg} while the position of the maximum of the anti-correlation and the extent of the positive correlation shrink with ϕavg\phi_{\rm avg}. We conjecture that the onset of anti-correlation corresponds to dilatancy onset in this system
