A fully-coherent all-sky search for gravitational-waves from compact binary coalescences
We introduce a fully-coherent method for searching for gravitational wave
signals generated by the merger of black hole and/or neutron star binaries.
This extends the coherent analysis previously developed and used for targeted
gravitational wave searches to an all-sky, all-time search. We apply the search
to one month of data taken during the fifth science run of the LIGO detectors.
We demonstrate an increase in sensitivity of 25% over the coincidence search,
which is commensurate with expectations. Finally, we discuss prospects for
implementing and running a coherent search for gravitational wave signals from
binary coalescence in the advanced gravitational wave detector data.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure
Rest Frame Optical Spectra of Lyman Break Galaxies: Other Lensing Arcs around MS1512-cB58
We have obtained near-infrared spectra of two images of the galaxy at z=2.72 which is gravitationally lensed by the foreground cluster MS1512+36. The brighter arc, cB58, is an image of only the nucleus and the southern half of the background galaxy, while the fainter image, A2, encompasses the entire background galaxy. Thus the gravitational lensing provides spatial resolution on a smaller scale than is routinely available by other methods.
Our observations indicate no evidence for any systematic rotational velocity gradient across the face of this galaxy. The nucleus and outer regions of the galaxy do not differ in their gas reddening or excitation level, based on the identical Hα/5007 ratios. cB58 (which is more dominated by the nucleus) has relatively stronger continuum emission, perhaps because of a higher ratio of old to young stars, compared to the outer parts of the galaxy.
A second emission line source, denoted as K1, at a slightly lower redshift was serendipitously detected in the slit. It appears to be the gravitationally lensed image of another background galaxy in the same group as cB58
Electromagnetic production of vector mesons at low energies
We have investigated exclusive photoproduction of light vector mesons
(, and ) on the nucleon at low energies. In order to
explore the questions concerning the so-called missing nucleon resonances, we
first establish the predictions from a model based on the Pomeron and meson
exchange mechanisms. We have also explored the contributions due to the
mechanisms involving - and -channel intermediate nucleon state. Some
discrepancies found at the energies near threshold and large scattering angles
suggest a possibility of using this reaction to identify the nucleon
resonances.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX with sprocl.sty, 5 figures (11 eps files), Talk

Near-Infrared Observations of the Environments of Radio Quiet QSOs at z >~ 1
We present the results of an infrared survey of QSO fields at z=0.95, 0.995
and 1.5. Each z<1 field was imaged to typical continuum limits of J=20.5,
Kprime=19 (5 sigma), and line fluxes of 1.3E10{-16}ergs/cm^2/s (1 sigma)in a 1%
interference filter. 16 fields were chosen with z~0.95 targets, 14 with z~0.995
and 6 with z~1.5. A total area of 0.05 square degrees was surveyed, and two
emission-line objects were found. We present the infrared and optical
photometry of these objects. Optical spectroscopy has confirmed the redshift of
one object (at z=0.989) and is consistent with the other object having a
similar redshift. We discuss the density of such objects across a range of
redshifts from this survey and others in the literature. We also present
number-magnitude counts for galaxies in the fields of radio quiet QSOs,
supporting the interpretation that they exist in lower density environments
than their radio loud counterparts. The J-band number counts are among the
first to be published in the J=16--20.Comment: 34 pages, including 12 figures; accepted for publication in the Ap
Stationary state volume fluctuations in a granular medium
A statistical description of static granular material requires ergodic
sampling of the phase space spanned by the different configurations of the
particles. We periodically fluidize a column of glass beads and find that the
sequence of volume fractions phi of post-fluidized states is history
independent and Gaussian distributed about a stationary state. The standard
deviation of phi exhibits, as a function of phi, a minimum corresponding to a
maximum in the number of statistically independent regions. Measurements of the
fluctuations enable us to determine the compactivity X, a temperature-like
state variable introduced in the statistical theory of Edwards and Oakeshott
[Physica A {\bf 157}, 1080 (1989)].Comment: published with minor change
Correlated disorder in random block-copolymers
We study the effect of a random Flory-Huggins parameter in a symmetric
diblock copolymer melt which is expected to occur in a copolymer where one
block is near its structural glass transition. In the clean limit the
microphase segregation between the two blocks causes a weak, fluctuation
induced first order transition to a lamellar state. Using a renormalization
group approach combined with the replica trick to treat the quenched disorder,
we show that beyond a critical disorder strength, that depends on the length of
the polymer chain, the character of the transition is changed. The system
becomes dominated by strong randomness and a glassy rather than an ordered
lamellar state occurs. A renormalization of the effective disorder distribution
leads to nonlocal disorder correlations that reflect strong compositional
fluctuation on the scale of the radius of gyration of the polymer chains. The
reason for this behavior is shown to be the chain length dependent role of
critical fluctuations, which are less important for shorter chains and become
increasingly more relevant as the polymer length increases and the clean first
order transition becomes weaker.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR
A stochastic template placement algorithm for gravitational wave data analysis
This paper presents an algorithm for constructing matched-filter template
banks in an arbitrary parameter space. The method places templates at random,
then removes those which are "too close" together. The properties and
optimality of stochastic template banks generated in this manner are
investigated for some simple models. The effectiveness of these template banks
for gravitational wave searches for binary inspiral waveforms is also examined.
The properties of a stochastic template bank are then compared to the
deterministically placed template banks that are currently used in
gravitational wave data analysis.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure
InGaAs/InP double heterostructures on InP/Si templates fabricated by wafer bonding and hydrogen-induced exfoliation
Hydrogen-induced exfoliation combined with wafer bonding has been used to transfer ~600-nm-thick films of (100) InP to Si substrates. Cross-section transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows a transferred crystalline InP layer with no observable defects in the region near the bonded interface and an intimately bonded interface. InP and Si are covalently bonded as inferred by the fact that InP/Si pairs survived both TEM preparation and thermal cycles up to 620 °C necessary for metalorganic chemical vapor deposition growth. The InP transferred layers were used as epitaxial templates for the growth of InP/In0.53Ga0.47As/InP double heterostructures. Photoluminescence measurements of the In0.53Ga0.47As layer show that it is optically active and under tensile strain, due to differences in the thermal expansion between InP and Si. These are promising results in terms of a future integration of Si electronics with optical devices based on InP-lattice-matched materials
Emission Line Galaxies in the STIS Parallel Survey II: Star Formation Density
We present the luminosity function of [OII]-emitting galaxies at a median
redshift of z=0.9, as measured in the deep spectroscopic data in the STIS
Parallel Survey (SPS). The luminosity function shows strong evolution from the
local value, as expected. By using random lines of sight, the SPS measurement
complements previous deep single field studies. We calculate the density of
inferred star formation at this redshift by converting from [OII] to H-alpha
line flux as a function of absolute magnitude and find rho_dot=0.043 +/- 0.014
Msun/yr/Mpc^3 at a median redshift z~0.9 within the range 0.46<z<1.415 (H_0 =
70 km/s/Mpc, Omega_M=0.3, Omega_Lambda=0.7. This density is consistent with a
(1+z)^4 evolution in global star formation since z~1. To reconcile the density
with similar measurements made by surveys targeting H-alpha may require
substantial extinction correction.Comment: 16 preprint pages including 5 figures; accepted for publication in

A hierarchical search for gravitational waves from supermassive black hole binary mergers
We present a method to search for gravitational waves from coalescing
supermassive binary black holes in LISA data. The search utilizes the
-statistic to maximize over, and determine the values of, the
extrinsic parameters of the binary system. The intrinsic parameters are
searched over hierarchically using stochastically generated multi-dimensional
template banks to recover the masses and sky locations of the binary. We
present the results of this method applied to the mock LISA data Challenge 1B
data set.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, for GWDAW-12 proceedings edition of CQ
