Ranking Templates for Linear Loops
We present a new method for the constraint-based synthesis of termination
arguments for linear loop programs based on linear ranking templates. Linear
ranking templates are parametrized, well-founded relations such that an
assignment to the parameters gives rise to a ranking function. This approach
generalizes existing methods and enables us to use templates for many different
ranking functions with affine-linear components. We discuss templates for
multiphase, piecewise, and lexicographic ranking functions. Because these
ranking templates require both strict and non-strict inequalities, we use
Motzkin's Transposition Theorem instead of Farkas Lemma to transform the
generated -constraint into an -constraint.Comment: TACAS 201
Radiative Corrections to One-Photon Decays of Hydrogenic Ions
Radiative corrections to the decay rate of n=2 states of hydrogenic ions are
calculated. The transitions considered are the M1 decay of the 2s state to the
ground state and the E1(M2) decays of the and states to
the ground state. The radiative corrections start in order , but the method used sums all orders of . The leading
correction for the E1 decays is calculated and compared
with the exact result. The extension of the calculational method to parity

Proving termination and memory safety for programs with Pointer Arithmetic
Proving termination automatically for programs with explicit pointer arithmetic is still an open problem. To close this gap, we introduce a novel abstract domain that can track allocated memory in detail. We use it to automatically construct a symbolic execution graph that represents all possible runs of the program and that can be used to prove memory safety. This graph is then transformed into an integer transition system, whose termination can be proved by standard techniques. We implemented this approach in the automated termination prover AProVE and demonstrate its capability of analyzing C programs with pointer arithmetic that existing tools cannot handle
Unrestricted Termination and Non-Termination Arguments for Bit-Vector Programs
Proving program termination is typically done by finding a well-founded
ranking function for the program states. Existing termination provers typically
find ranking functions using either linear algebra or templates. As such they
are often restricted to finding linear ranking functions over mathematical
integers. This class of functions is insufficient for proving termination of
many terminating programs, and furthermore a termination argument for a program
operating on mathematical integers does not always lead to a termination
argument for the same program operating on fixed-width machine integers. We
propose a termination analysis able to generate nonlinear, lexicographic
ranking functions and nonlinear recurrence sets that are correct for
fixed-width machine arithmetic and floating-point arithmetic Our technique is
based on a reduction from program \emph{termination} to second-order
\emph{satisfaction}. We provide formulations for termination and
non-termination in a fragment of second-order logic with restricted
quantification which is decidable over finite domains. The resulted technique
is a sound and complete analysis for the termination of finite-state programs
with fixed-width integers and IEEE floating-point arithmetic
Observations and modeling of wave-supported sediment gravity flows on the Po prodelta and comparison to prior observations from the Eel shelf

The definitive version was published in Continental Shelf Research 27 (2007): 375-399, doi:10.1016/j.csr.2005.07.008.A mooring and tripod array was deployed from the fall of 2002 through the spring of 2003 on the Po prodelta to measure sediment transport processes associated with sediment delivered from the Po River. Observations on the prodelta revealed wave-supported gravity flows of high concentration mud suspensions that are dynamically and kinematically similar to those observed on the Eel shelf (Traykovski et al., 2000). Due to the dynamic similarity between the two sites, a simple one-dimensional across-shelf model with the appropriate bottom boundary condition was used to examine fluxes associated with this transport mechanism at both locations. To calculate the sediment concentrations associated with the wave-dominated and wave-current resuspension, a bottom boundary condition using a reference concentration was combined with an “active layer” formulation to limit the amount of sediment in suspension. Whereas the wave-supported gravity flow mechanism dominates the transport on the Eel shelf, on the Po prodelta flux due to this mechanism is equal in magnitude to transport due to wave resuspension and wind-forced mean currents in cross-shore direction. Southward transport due to wave resuspension and wind forced mean currents move an order of magnitude more sediment along-shore than the downslope flux associated wave-supported gravity flows.This work funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research under grant number #N00014-02-10378, under the direction of program manager, Tom Drake
Alternating runtime and size complexity analysis of integer programs
We present a modular approach to automatic complexity analysis. Based on a novel alternation between finding symbolic time bounds for program parts and using these to infer size bounds on program variables, we can restrict each analysis step to a small part of the program while maintaining a high level of precision. Extensive experiments with the implementation of our method demonstrate its performance and power in comparison with other tools
Using the past to constrain the future: how the palaeorecord can improve estimates of global warming
Climate sensitivity is defined as the change in global mean equilibrium
temperature after a doubling of atmospheric CO2 concentration and provides a
simple measure of global warming. An early estimate of climate sensitivity,
1.5-4.5{\deg}C, has changed little subsequently, including the latest
assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
The persistence of such large uncertainties in this simple measure casts
doubt on our understanding of the mechanisms of climate change and our ability
to predict the response of the climate system to future perturbations. This has
motivated continued attempts to constrain the range with climate data, alone or
in conjunction with models. The majority of studies use data from the
instrumental period (post-1850) but recent work has made use of information
about the large climate changes experienced in the geological past.
In this review, we first outline approaches that estimate climate sensitivity
using instrumental climate observations and then summarise attempts to use the
record of climate change on geological timescales. We examine the limitations
of these studies and suggest ways in which the power of the palaeoclimate
record could be better used to reduce uncertainties in our predictions of

The Intentional Use of Service Recovery Strategies to Influence Consumer Emotion, Cognition and Behaviour
Service recovery strategies have been identified as a critical factor in the success of. service organizations. This study develops a conceptual frame work to investigate how specific service recovery strategies influence the emotional, cognitive and negative behavioural responses of . consumers., as well as how emotion and cognition influence negative behavior. Understanding the impact of specific service recovery strategies will allow service providers' to more deliberately and intentionally engage in strategies that result in positive organizational outcomes. This study was conducted using a 2 x 2 between-subjects quasi-experimental design. The results suggest that service recovery has a significant impact on emotion, cognition and negative behavior. Similarly, satisfaction, negative emotion and positive emotion all influence negative behavior but distributive justice has no effect
