The Measure-theoretic Identity Underlying Transient Fluctuation Theorems
We prove a measure-theoretic identity that underlies all transient
fluctuation theorems (TFTs) for entropy production and dissipated work in
inhomogeneous deterministic and stochastic processes, including those of Evans
and Searles, Crooks, and Seifert. The identity is used to deduce a tautological
physical interpretation of TFTs in terms of the arrow of time, and its
generality reveals that the self-inverse nature of the various trajectory and
process transformations historically relied upon to prove TFTs, while necessary
for these theorems from a physical standpoint, is not necessary from a
mathematical one. The moment generating functions of thermodynamic variables
appearing in the identity are shown to converge in general only in a vertical
strip in the complex plane, with the consequence that a TFT that holds over
arbitrary timescales may fail to give rise to an asymptotic fluctuation theorem
for any possible speed of the corresponding large deviation principle. The case
of strongly biased birth-death chains is presented to illustrate this
phenomenon. We also discuss insights obtained from our measure-theoretic
formalism into the results of Saha et. al. on the breakdown of TFTs for driven
Brownian particles
Dynamic Kerr effect responses in the Terahertz-range
Dynamic Kerr effect measurements provide a simple realization of a nonlinear
experiment. We propose a field-off experiment where an electric field of one or
several sinusoidal cycles is applied to a sample in thermal equilibrium.
Afterwards, the evolution of the polarizability is measured. If such an
experiment is performed in the Terahertz-range it might provide valuable
information about the low-frequency dynamics in disordered systems. We treat
these dynamics in terms of a Brownian oscillator model and calculate the Kerr
effect response. It is shown that frequency-selective behaviour can be
expected. In the interesting case of underdamped vibrational motion we find
that the frequency-dependence of the phonon-damping can be determined from the
experiment. Also the behaviour of overdamped relaxational modes is discussed.
For typical glassy materials we estimate the magnitude of all relevant
quantities, which we believe to be helpful in experimental realizations.Comment: 26 pages incl. 5 figure

Effectiveness of adult community-based physical activity interventions with objective physical activity measurements and long-term follow-up: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVE: To identify randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of physical activity (PA) interventions with objective PA outcomes in adults and to evaluate whether intervention effects were sustained beyond 12 months. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: Seven databases (Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Cochrane library, CINAHL (Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature) and ASSIA (Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts)) were searched from January 2000 until December 2019. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: RCTs reporting objective PA outcomes beyond 12 months with community-based participants aged ≥18 years were included; those where controls received active interventions, including advice to increase PA levels, were excluded. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Two independent reviewers completed extraction of aggregate data and assessed risk of bias. Meta-analyses used random-effects models at different follow-up points. Primary outcomes were daily steps and weekly minutes of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). RESULTS: Of 33 282 records identified, nine studies (at generally low risk of bias) were included, five in meta-analyses with 12 months to 4 year follow-up. We observed 12 month increases for intervention vs control participants in steps/day (mean difference (MD)=554 (95% CIs: 384 to 724) p<0.0001, I2=0%; 2446 participants; four studies) and weekly MVPA minutes (MD=35 (95% CI: 27 to 43) p<0.0001, I2=0%; 2647 participants; four studies). Effects were sustained up to 4 years for steps/day (MD=494 (95% CI: 251 to 738) p<0.0001, I2=0%; 1944 participants; four studies) and weekly MVPA minutes (MD=25 (95% CI: 13 to 37) p<0.0001, I2=0%; 1458 participants; three studies). CONCLUSIONS: There are few PA interventions with objective follow-up beyond 12 months, more studies are needed. However, this review provided evidence of PA intervention effects beyond 12 months and sustained up to 4 years for both steps/day and MVPA. Unveiling Palomar 2: The Most Obscure Globular Cluster in the Outer Halo
We present the first color-magnitude study for Palomar 2, a distant and
heavily obscured globular cluster near the Galactic anticenter. Our (V,V-I)
color-magnitude diagram (CMD), obtained with the UH8K camera at the CFHT,
reaches V(lim) = 24 and clearly shows the principal sequences of the cluster,
though with substantial overall foreground absorption and differential
reddening. The CMD morphology shows a well populated red horizontal branch with
a sparser extension to the blue, similar to clusters such as NGC 1261, 1851, or
6229 with metallicities near [Fe/H] = -1.3, placing it about 34 kpc
from the Galactic center. We use starcounts of the bright stars to measure the
core radius, half-mass radius, and central concentration of the cluster. Its
integrated luminosity is M_V = -7.9, making it clearly brighter and more

Effect of side chains on the dielectric properties of alkyl esters derived from palm kernel oil
Alkyl ester derivatives were synthesized from laboratory purified palm kernel oil. The steps in the synthesis involved transesterification of palm kernel oil to produce a methyl ester, followed by epoxidation and then the grafting of side chains by esterification with propionic and butyric anhydride. The dielectric and thermal properties of the ester derivatives were analyzed and compared with the methyl ester. The melting point of the ester derivatives were found to reduce with side chain attachment and antioxidant improved its thermal stability. The dielectric loss was dominated by mobile charged particles and the chemical modification appeared to increase the rate at which electric double layer was formed at the electrode-liquid interface. The esters possessed excellent breakdown strengths suggesting that the processing to optimize their physical properties did not have a negative influence on their electrical breakdown strength. This product may prove useful as an insulation fluid in Electrical Power Transformers
Effluent sampling of Scout D and Delta launch vehicle exhausts
Characterization of engine-exhaust effluents (hydrogen chloride, aluminum oxide, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide) has been attempted by conducting field experiments monitoring the exhaust cloud from a Scout-Algol III vehicle launch and a Delta-Thor vehicle launch. The exhaust cloud particulate size number distribution (total number of particles as a function of particle diameter), mass loading, morphology, and elemental composition have been determined within limitations. The gaseous species in the exhaust cloud have been identified. In addition to the ground-based measurements, instrumented aircraft flights through the low-altitude, stabilized-exhaust cloud provided measurements which identified CO and HCI gases and Al2O3 particles. Measurements of the initial exhaust cloud during formation and downwind at several distances have established sampling techniques which will be used for experimental verification of model predictions of effluent dispersion and fallout from exhaust clouds
Atmospheric particulate measurements in Norfolk, Virginia
Characterization of atmospheric particulates was conducted at a site near the center of Norfolk, Virginia. Air quality was measured in terms of atmospheric mass loading, particle size distribution, and particulate elemental composition for a period of 2 weeks. The objectives of this study were (1) to establish a mean level of air quality and deviations about this mean, (2) to ascertain diurnal changes or special events in air quality, and (3) to evaluate instrumentation and sampling schedules. Simultaneous measurements were made with the following instruments: a quartz crystal microbalance particulate monitor, a light-scattering multirange particle counter, a high-volume air sampler, and polycarbonate membrane filters. To assess the impact of meteorological conditions on air quality variations, continuous data on temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and wind direction were recorded. Particulate elemental composition was obtained from neutron activation and scanning electron microscopy analyses of polycarbonate membrane filter samples. The measured average mass loading agrees reasonably well with the mass loadings determined by the Virginia State Air Pollution Control Board. There are consistent diurnal increases in atmospheric mass loading in the early morning and a sample time resolution of 1/2 hour seems necessary to detect most of the significant events
Collaboration between Science and Religious Education teachers in Scottish Secondary schools
The article reports on quantitative research that examines: (1) the current practice in collaboration; and (2) potential for collaboration between Science and Religious Education teachers in a large sample of Scottish secondary schools. The authors adopt and adapt three models (conflict; concordat and consonance) to interrogate the relationship between science and religion (and the perceived relation between these two subjects in schools) (Astley and Francis 2010). The findings indicate that there is evidence of limited collaboration and, in a few cases, a dismissive attitude towards collaboration (conflict and concordat and very weak consonance). There is, however, evidence of a genuine aspiration for greater collaboration among many teachers (moving towards a more robust consonance model). The article concludes by discussing a number of key factors that must be realised for this greater collaboration to be enacted
