    Long Range Order at Low Temperature in Dipolar Spin Ice

    Recently it has been suggested that long range magnetic dipolar interactions are responsible for spin ice behavior in the Ising pyrochlore magnets Dy2Ti2O7{\rm Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}} and Ho2Ti2O7{\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}. We report here numerical results on the low temperature properties of the dipolar spin ice model, obtained via a new loop algorithm which greatly improves the dynamics at low temperature. We recover the previously reported missing entropy in this model, and find a first order transition to a long range ordered phase with zero total magnetization at very low temperature. We discuss the relevance of these results to Dy2Ti2O7{\rm Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}} and Ho2Ti2O7{\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}.Comment: New version of the manuscript.     Spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Antiferromagnet on the Kagome Lattice: High Temperature Expansion and Exact Diagonalisation Studies

    For the spin-12\frac{1}{2} Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Kagom\'e lattice we calculate the high temperature series for the specific heat and the structure factor. A comparison of the series with exact diagonalisation studies shows that the specific heat has further structure at lower temperature in addition to a high temperature peak at T≈2/3T\approx 2/3. At T=0.25T=0.25 the structure factor agrees quite well with results for the ground state of a finite cluster with 36 sites. At this temperature the structure factor is less than two times its T=∞T=\infty value and depends only weakly on the wavevector q\bf q, indicating the absence of magnetic order and a correlation length of less than one lattice spacing. The uniform susceptibility has a maximum at T≈1/6T\approx 1/6 and vanishes exponentially for lower temperatures.Comment: 15 pages + 5 figures, revtex, 26.04.9

    Systematic Inclusion of High-Order Multi-Spin Correlations for the Spin-121\over2 XXZXXZ Models

    We apply the microscopic coupled-cluster method (CCM) to the spin-121\over2 XXZXXZ models on both the one-dimensional chain and the two-dimensional square lattice. Based on a systematic approximation scheme of the CCM developed by us previously, we carry out high-order {\it ab initio} calculations using computer-algebraic techniques. The ground-state properties of the models are obtained with high accuracy as functions of the anisotropy parameter.     Coupled-Cluster Approach to Electron Correlations in the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

    We have studied electron correlations in the doped two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model by using the coupled-cluster method (CCM) to investigate whether or not the method can be applied to correct the independent particle approximations actually used in ab-initio band calculations. The double excitation version of the CCM, implemented using the approximate coupled pair (ACP) method, account for most of the correlation energies of the 2D Hubbard model in the weak (U/t≃1U/t \simeq 1) and the intermediate U/tU/t regions (U/t≃4U/t \simeq 4). The error is always less than 1% there. The ACP approximation gets less accurate for large U/tU/t (U/t≃8U/t \simeq 8) and/or near half-filling. Further incorporation of electron correlation effects is necessary in this region. The accuracy does not depend on the system size and the gap between the lowest unoccupied level and the highest occupied level due to the finite size effect. Hence, the CCM may be favorably applied to ab-initio band calculations on metals as well as semiconductors and insulators.Comment: RevTeX3.0, 4 pages, 4 figure

    The effect of beta-alanine supplementation on neuromuscular fatigue in elderly (55–92 Years): a double-blind randomized study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ageing is associated with a significant reduction in skeletal muscle carnosine which has been linked with a reduction in the buffering capacity of muscle and in theory, may increase the rate of fatigue during exercise. Supplementing beta-alanine has been shown to significantly increase skeletal muscle carnosine. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to examine the effects of ninety days of beta-alanine supplementation on the physical working capacity at the fatigue threshold (PWC<sub>FT</sub>) in elderly men and women.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using a double-blind placebo controlled design, twenty-six men (n = 9) and women (n = 17) (age ± SD = 72.8 ± 11.1 yrs) were randomly assigned to either beta-alanine (BA: 800 mg × 3 per day; n = 12; CarnoSyn™) or Placebo (PL; n = 14) group. Before (pre) and after (post) the supplementation period, participants performed a discontinuous cycle ergometry test to determine the PWC<sub>FT</sub>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Significant increases in PWC<sub>FT </sub>(28.6%) from pre- to post-supplementation were found for the BA treatment group (p < 0.05), but no change was observed with PL treatment. These findings suggest that ninety days of BA supplementation may increase physical working capacity by delaying the onset of neuromuscular fatigue in elderly men and women.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We suggest that BA supplementation, by improving intracellular pH control, improves muscle endurance in the elderly. This, we believe, could have importance in the prevention of falls, and the maintenance of health and independent living in elderly men and women.</p

    Influence of history on saccade countermanding performance in humans and macaque monkeys

    AbstractThe stop-signal or countermanding task probes the ability to control action by requiring subjects to withhold a planned movement in response to an infrequent stop signal which they do with variable success depending on the delay of the stop signal. We investigated whether performance of humans and macaque monkeys in a saccade countermanding task was influenced by stimulus and performance history. In spite of idiosyncrasies across subjects several trends were evident in both humans and monkeys. Response time decreased after successive trials with no stop signal. Response time increased after successive trials with a stop signal. However, post-error slowing was not observed. Increased response time was observed mainly or only after cancelled (signal inhibit) trials and not after noncancelled (signal respond) trials. These global trends were based on rapid adjustments of response time in response to momentary fluctuations in the fraction of stop signal trials. The effects of trial sequence on the probability of responding were weaker and more idiosyncratic across subjects when stop signal fraction was fixed. However, both response time and probability of responding were influenced strongly by variations in the fraction of stop signal trials. These results indicate that the race model of countermanding performance requires extension to account for these sequential dependencies and provide a basis for physiological studies of executive control of countermanding saccade performance

    Source Coding Optimization for Distributed Average Consensus

    Consensus is a common method for computing a function of the data distributed among the nodes of a network. Of particular interest is distributed average consensus, whereby the nodes iteratively compute the sample average of the data stored at all the nodes of the network using only near-neighbor communications. In real-world scenarios, these communications must undergo quantization, which introduces distortion to the internode messages. In this thesis, a model for the evolution of the network state statistics at each iteration is developed under the assumptions of Gaussian data and additive quantization error. It is shown that minimization of the communication load in terms of aggregate source coding rate can be posed as a generalized geometric program, for which an equivalent convex optimization can efficiently solve for the global minimum. Optimization procedures are developed for rate-distortion-optimal vector quantization, uniform entropy-coded scalar quantization, and fixed-rate uniform quantization. Numerical results demonstrate the performance of these approaches. For small numbers of iterations, the fixed-rate optimizations are verified using exhaustive search. Comparison to the prior art suggests competitive performance under certain circumstances but strongly motivates the incorporation of more sophisticated coding strategies, such as differential, predictive, or Wyner-Ziv coding.Comment: Master's Thesis, Electrical Engineering, North Carolina State Universit
