Multi-wavelength Signatures of Cosmic Rays in the Milky Way
Cosmic rays (CRs) propagate in the Milky Way and interact with the
interstellar medium and magnetic fields. These interactions produce emissions
that span the electromagnetic spectrum, and are an invaluable tool for
understanding the intensities and spectra of CRs in distant regions, far beyond
those probed by direct CR measurements. We present updates on the study of CR
properties by combining multi-frequency observations of the interstellar

Graph-Facilitated Resonant Mode Counting in Stochastic Interaction Networks
Oscillations in a stochastic dynamical system, whose deterministic
counterpart has a stable steady state, are a widely reported phenomenon.
Traditional methods of finding parameter regimes for stochastically-driven
resonances are, however, cumbersome for any but the smallest networks. In this
letter we show by example of the Brusselator how to use real root counting
algorithms and graph theoretic tools to efficiently determine the number of
resonant modes and parameter ranges for stochastic oscillations. We argue that
stochastic resonance is a network property by showing that resonant modes only
depend on the squared Jacobian matrix , unlike deterministic oscillations
which are determined by . By using graph theoretic tools, analysis of
stochastic behaviour for larger networks is simplified and chemical reaction
networks with multiple resonant modes can be identified easily.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Thrust performance of isolated 36-chute suppressor plug nozzles with and without ejectors at Mach numbers from 0 to 0.45
Plug nozzles with chute-type noise suppressors were tested with and without ejector shrouds at free-stream Mach numbers from 0 to 0.45 and over a range of nozzle pressure ratios from 2 to 4. A 36-chute suppressor nozzle with an ejector had an efficiency of 94.6 percent at an assumed takeoff pressure ratio of 3.0 and a Mach number of 0.36. This represents only a 3.4 percent performance penalty when compared with the 98 percent efficiency obtained with a previously tested unsuppressed plug nozzle

A series of two-dimensional plug nozzles was tested with and without ejector shrouds at free stream Mach numbers from 0 to 0.45 and over a range of nozzle pressure ratios from 2 to 4. These nozzles were also tested with and without chute noise suppressors. A two-dimensional plug nozzle has an efficiency of 96.1 percent at an assumed takeoff pressure ratio of 3.0 and Mach 0.36. A 12-chute suppressed nozzle with sidewalls has an efficiency of 81.0 percent (15.1 percent below the unsuppressed nozzle)
Introducing First Year Medical Students to Personalized Medicine Concepts in a Small Group Activity
Presented as a Poster Presentation at 2020 IUSM Education Day.An individuals’ genetic profile is becomingly an increasingly important parameter in healthcare decisions. This small group activity was developed to introduce first year medical students in the Molecules to Cells and Tissues course to the concept and significance of Pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine. Additionally, this activity provided students with an opportunity to work with a large dataset and use the information to impact clinical decision making. This activity has two cases, takes student groups approximately 2 hours to complete, and requires internet access. Case materials are available through the learning management system Canvas, and include open-ended questions to guide students through the cases. In these cases students explore the functional significance of different alleles of a panel of cytochrome P450 genes. The group activity has the students examine a large data set of cytochrome P450 genes and cognate alleles to determine their prevalence in the local population and calculate the individuals’ gene scores. The students are then asked to explain the impact of the genotype (or gene score) on the resulting patient phenotype (i.e. the functional significance of the genotype). The first case involves a breast cancer survivor support group in which patients taking Taxol discuss lack of adequate pain relief from opioids and the potential impact of concomitant use of natural compounds/supplements on drug metabolism. The second case involves a patient presenting with recurrent stroke-like symptoms despite being on the anticoagulant medication clopidogrel. The patient is initially suspected to be non-compliant, but is later determined to be a poor metabolizer of the anticoagulant clopidogrelto its active form thus decreasing its efficacy. The expertise of the IUSM Medical Genetics research faculty was leveraged to provide a large data set of cytochrome P450 genes and cognate alleles. The selection of cytochrome P450 was based upon delivering content focused on the biochemistry of the enzyme system and provided an opportunity to highlight the drug interaction database available through IUSM Clinical Pharmacology (The FlockhartTable™ ; https://drug-interactions.medicine.iu.edu/). The addition of natural compounds was to draw students’ attention to the Natural Medicines database, which is the recommended source for evidence-based data on complementary and alternative medicine. Natural Medicines is available through the Ruth Lilly Medical Library and can be searched by substance or condition. It provides both a summary of the literature available on substances as well as the level of evidence or quality of studies done on the substance

Dynamics of Surface Roughening with Quenched Disorder
We study the dynamical exponent for the directed percolation depinning
(DPD) class of models for surface roughening in the presence of quenched
disorder. We argue that for dimensions is equal to the exponent
characterizing the shortest path between two sites in an

Cats with thermal burn injuries from California wildfires show echocardiographic evidence of myocardial thickening and intracardiac thrombi.
Recent increases in the prevalence and severity of wildfires in some regions have resulted in an increased frequency of veterinary burn patients. Few studies exist regarding diagnostics and management of burn wounds in veterinary patients and current knowledge is extrapolated from human literature and research models. Post-burn cardiac injury is a common finding and predictor of mortality in human patients and echocardiography is an important tool in monitoring response to therapy and predicting outcome. We describe the notable findings from cats naturally exposed to California wildfires in 2017 and 2018. Domestic cats (n = 51) sustaining burn injuries from the Tubbs (2017) and Camp (2018) wildfires were prospectively enrolled and serial echocardiograms and cardiac troponin I evaluations were performed. Echocardiograms of affected cats revealed a high prevalence of myocardial thickening (18/51) and spontaneous echocardiographic contrast and thrombi formation (16/51). Forty-two cats survived to discharge and 6 died or were euthanized due to a possible cardiac cause. For the first time, we describe cardiovascular and coagulation effects of thermal burn and smoke inhalation in cats. Further studies in veterinary burn victims are warranted and serve as a translational research opportunity for uncovering novel disease mechanisms and therapies
