Quantification of methane oxidation in the rice rhizosphere using 13C-labelled methane
In this paper isotope ratio mass spectrometry is used to determine the methane (CH4) oxidation fraction in the rhizosphere of intact rice plant-soil systems. Earlier studies on quantification of the methane oxidation were based on inhibition or incubation procedures which strongly interfered with the plant-soil system and resulted in a large variability of the reported fractions, while other studies considered stable isotopes at natural abundance levels to investigate methanotrophy in the rhizosphere of rice. The current work is the first that used 13C-labelled CH4 as additive and calculated the oxidation fraction from the ratio between the added 13C-labelled CH4 and its oxidation product 13CO2. Both labelled gases could be distinguished from the natural abundance percentages. The oxidation fraction for methane was found to be smaller than 7%, suggesting that former approaches overestimate the methane oxidation fraction.
Psychoacoustic, Embedded Theory for Semaphores
The study of neural networks has synthesized flip-flop gates, and current trends suggest that the synthesis of A* search will soon emerge. After years of extensive research into expert systems, we disprove the study of scatter/gather I/O. we skip these algorithms for anonymity. Broadly, independent-tunable, dual-wavelength mid-infrared ultrafast optical parametric oscillator
We demonstrate a two-crystal mid-infrared dual-wavelength optical parametric
oscillator, synchronously pumped by a high power femtosecond Yb:fiber laser.
The singly-resonant ring cavity, containing two periodically poled lithium
niobate crystals, is capable of generating two synchronized idler wavelengths,
independently tunable over 30 THz in the 2.9 - 4.2 {\mu}m wavelength region,
due to the cascaded quadratic nonlinear effect. The independent tunability of
the two idlers makes the optical parametric oscillator a promising source for
ultrafast pulse generation towards the THz wavelength region, based on
different frequency generation. In addition, the observed frequency doubled
idler within the crystal indicates the possibility to realize a broadband
optical self-phase locking between pump, signal, idler and higher order
generated parametric lights
An Interview with Fanny Howe
Fanny Howe, author of the The Needleâs Eye: Passing through Youth, visited the College of Saint Benedict and Saint Johnâs University on January 22, 2017. Fanny Howe was a finalist for the National Book Award for her book of poetry Second Childhood and her fiction has been considered as a finalist for the Man Booker International Prize. We were fortunate enough to spend a sunny afternoon in our dining room with Fanny and hear her discuss her thoughts on literature, religion, life, and politics

Estimating Stable Fixed Points and Langevin Potentials for Financial Dynamics
The Geometric Brownian Motion (GBM) is a standard model in quantitative
finance, but the potential function of its stochastic differential equation
(SDE) cannot include stable nonzero prices. This article generalises the GBM to
an SDE with polynomial drift of order q and shows via model selection that q=2
is most frequently the optimal model to describe the data. Moreover, Markov
chain Monte Carlo ensembles of the accompanying potential functions show a
clear and pronounced potential well, indicating the existence of a stable
price.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Comparison of Current Knowledge, Attitudes and Interest among German Medical Students and Doctors
Although it has been agreed that complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) should be included in the German medical curriculum, there is no consensus on which methods and how it should be taught. This study aimed to assess needs for CAM education by evaluating current knowledge, attitudes and interests of medical students, general physicians and gynecologists. Two instruments based on established and validated questionnaires were developed. One was given to seventh semester medical students and the other to office-based doctors. Data were analyzed by bivariate correlation and cross-tabulation. Altogether 550 questionnaires were distributedâ280 to doctors and 270 to medical students. Completed questionnaires were returned by 80.4% of students and 78.2% of doctors. Although 73.8% (160/219) of doctors and 40% (87/217) of students had already informed themselves about CAM, neither group felt that they knew much about CAM. Doctors believed that CAM was most useful in general medicine, supportive oncology, pediatrics, dermatology and gynecology, while students believed that dermatology, general medicine, psychiatry and rheumatology offered opportunities; both recommended that CAM should be taught in these areas. Both groups believed that CAM should be included in medical education; however, they believed that CAM needed more investigation and should be taught âcritically". German doctors and students would like to be better informed about CAM. An approach which teaches fundamental competences to students, chooses specific content based on evidence, demographics and medical conditions and provides students with the skills they need for future learning should be adopted
