The purpose of this paper is to assess whether the national program on beef self sufficiency could be achieved at 2014. A dynamic system model with Vensim computer program is applied. The model validated by Mean Absolute Percentage Error. The results shows high accuracies of the model. The assessment show that, first, the beef self sufficiency would not be achieved at 2014 if the program are treated and running as usual (Scenario I). Second, the beef self sufficiency would be achieved at 2015 if government increase the cow population by reducing the slaughter of local cows and expanding the cross breeding program through artificial insemination (Scenario II). Third, the beef self sufficiency would not be achieved at 2014 if the actual beef consumption are higher than the supply that produce through Scenario II (Scenario III). Another innovative solution for increasing local cow population is needed

Up to present, the dairy farmers only able to meet 25-30 percent of all milk demand in Indonesia, although milk and its derivatives continues to increase steadily. This condition occurs due to low milk productivity, small-scale dairy farm unit, inadequate government policies as well as economic globalization. The objectives of this study are, first, to measure the competitiveness of the small-scale dairy farm. Second, to evaluate the impact of government policies. Third, lastly, to analyse the implication of price changes on input-output. A Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) for data is applied. The results show that, first, the small-scale dairy farms operate in competitiveness. Second, so far government policies did not provide adequate incentives and directly promote the dairy farms\u27s competitiveness. Third, high import tariff (15 percent) could significantly protect the competitiveness of the smallscale dairy farms

The growth of several types of grass in the area of mine re-vegetation is rapidly providing an opportunity to be used as forages despite the possibility of heavy metal contamination. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of treatment of different levels of elephant grass (EG) (Pennisetum purpureum) planted at ex-coal mining reclamation on milk productivity and mineral contents of dairy cattle. This study used four lactating (second lactation) dairy cattle using Latin Square Design of 4 (treatments) x 4 (replications). Each period was 21 days consisted of 14 days of preliminary for feed adaptation and 7 days for observation. Treatments were P0 (0% ex-coal mining (EEG)+60% Farmer’s EG (FEG)+40% Concentrate), P1 (15% EEG+45% FEG+40% Concentrate), P2 (30% EEG+30% FEG+40% Concentrate), and P3 (60% EEG+0% FEG+40% Concentrate). The study observed variables of feed intake and efficiencies, milk production, milk quality, and mineral contents of milk. Results showed that EEG treatment at different levels did not affect fresh and dry matter intake. The highest fresh and dry matter intake was found in P0 treatment. There was no significant difference in giving EG planted at the ex-coal mining and the farmer’s land on the milk production and milk quality. The only significant differences (p<0.05) were found in mineral Fe and Mg contents of milk. The study concluded that giving EG planted at the ex-coal mining area until 60% of forage affected Fe and Mg contents of milk, but they are still in the safe limit

Productivity and Nutritive Value of Mutant Benggala Grass (Panicum maximum cv Purple Guinea) in the Saline Soil of Coastal Area in Lebak-Banten Province

The coastal region of Lebak-Banten is an area with a relatively high population of buffalo. The forage requirement has relied on existing forage with low productivity and quality. The study aimed to investigate the physiological, morphological, and nutritional response of mutant benggala grass in the coastal area and to develop salt-tolerant forage crops with high productivity and nutritive value for livestock. The research was conducted in the Binuangeun coastal area, Muara Village, Wanasalam District, Lebak Regency, located at 6°50’34.4”S and 105°53’23.4”E. This study used a completely randomized block design with a factorial arrangement with 5 replications. The first factor consisted of 4 benggala grass mutants: mutant 12, 18, 36, 56, and a control. The second factor was the location or distance of the planting plots from the coastline (FC), consisting of L1: 50 m FC, L2: 75 m FC, L3: 100 m FC, and L4: 500 m FC, representative of low, moderate, and high salinity levels, and no saline. Observations were made during the dry and rainy seasons. The results showed that mutants 12 and 36 had higher fresh forage production during the rainy season, while mutant 36 had the highest forage production at the L1 location (high salinity conditions) during the dry season. Mutant 12 had higher crude protein values at the L2 location (moderate salinity) than the other mutants and locations (salinity levels) during the dry season. Meanwhile, mutant 18 at the L2 location (moderate salinity) had the highest crude protein value during the rainy season. In addition, mutant 12 had a high proline value at the L1 location (high salinity stress) as a plant adaptation response to salinity stress. The study suggests that mutants 12 and 36 have great potential to be developed into new salt-tolerant forage crop cultivars and can be grown in coastal areas of Lebak-Banten
