The Defense of Principates: The English Appropriation of Marsilius of Padua\u27s \u27Defensor Pacis\u27

Marsilius of Padua’s Defensor pacis is widely thought to be one of the most important texts to emerge in late medieval Europe. Initially purposed as a defense of Holy Roman Emperor Ludwig IV’s rights against the claim of the papacy’s claim to possess a ‘plenitude of power’, Defensor pacis is one of the most sophisticated arguments against the centuries of abuse of papal authority. Marsilius, though condemned as a heretic during his lifetime, remains a pivotal figure for medieval and early modern European historians, and is perhaps best remembered by the ways that his ideology influenced subsequent generations of political thinkers. Along that thread, this thesis examines the translation of Defensor pacis into English during the reign of King Henry VIII, just over two centuries after it was originally written in Latin. Through this examination, with the support of secondary literature, I will hope to determine the ways in which Marsilius’ tract was appropriated or changed to reflect the political and religious realities of Reformation England

A Pastor and his Ministry: Gregory Thamaturgus\u27 Address of Thanksgiving to Origen as Pastoral Practice

One such student of his times was Origen. In his writings we see glimpses that while his goal was ultimately a deeply spiritual one-no less than a union with the Divine-he seemed no stranger to a more holistic approach in his encounters with the students who placed themselves under his tutelage. One of those students, Gregory Thaumaturgus, often called the Wonderworker, even bequeathed to the church a most revealing document that enables us to get a rare glimpse of Origen and his method and style. It is that document, Gregory\u27s Address of Thanksgiving to Origen, that will be the subject of this paper. For my purposes, the greater goal will be to discern whether Origen\u27s method of discipling his students fits the category of what would be considered spiritual direction and the care of souls. To what degree does this method contribute to a pastor\u27s overall view of his own office, and the practice of what has traditionally been understood as the care of souls? Gregory offers up some wonderful insights regarding his teacher and friend. In so doing, he opens a window to past patterns of spiritual direction and formation, with a possible view to the present

Implementation of Electronic Medical Record HbA 1 c reminders for Adult Native Americans

The learning project was developed to determine if using clinical decision supp01i in an EMR can improve patient outcomes. Patient outcomes can be improved with implementation of a decision making tool, such as a reminder based on a clinical guideline, in an EMR. The practice recommendation in the project is to implement a computerized tool to trigger clinicians to order HbA 1 c in a patient that is dete1mined to be prediabetic or has an increased risk factor such as being a Native American. Education of the clinicians would be needed to both inform them of the trigger and the recommendations of the results. Therefore, an education in-service was developed using adult learning theory as a framework

Quant Se Depart Li Jolis Tans: Betrayal In The Songs Of Medieval French Women

For decades, the authorship of women trouvères has been questioned. Although the debate is more or less over in today’s scholarship, research continues to search for evidence of not only their existence but for their contribution to the corpus. Women’s voices in the songs call out not only because the speaker is female, but also because I argue that the author was female too. This is evidenced by the speaker’s perception of betrayal. This paper highlights three key forms of betrayal that medieval women faced: betrayal by the family, betrayal by the lover, and betrayal by the lauzengiers and the mesdixants. Family betrayal included being sent to a nunnery against her will as either punishment for having a lover or as a means of marrying the woman to God when an appropriate suitor could not be attained, and forced marriage to an man who is undesirable to the woman. Relationship betrayal is not only when the lover betrays his lady but also but the evil gelos betrays his wife by imprisoning her in a tower. The third form of betrayal, societal betrayal most often occurs when gossiping neighbors and townspeople seek to destroy the joy of the lovers by revealing their relationship to others. Because we have so few documents from the thirteenth and fourteenth century it is difficult to have a solid understanding of the medieval quotidian. I argue, however, that these poems, like today’s cinema, television, and literature, give modern readers a glimpse into the daily worries and difficulties of medieval women

Remembering Agincourt: An Analysis of King Henry V\u27s Impact on English National Identity

    Get PDF
King Henry V is one of the best remembered monarchs in English History. Although he died at the untimely age of 36 after only nine years on the throne, his reign saw England\u27s empire in France reach its highest point, an accomplishment that was actualized in the of the Battle of Agincourt. In the six centuries since, both Henry\u27s reign as a whole and the battle itself have impacted the identity of the English nation in many ways. This paper analyzes the influence of these events on those who followed, ranging from the use of heraldry after the battle to the way that Henry was used as a heroic symbol during World War II. Although his reign was relatively short, Henry V holds a place of national significance to every generation since

The Political Consequences of King Charles II\u27s Catholic Sympathies in Restoration England

Over a decade after the execution of his father, Charles II of England was invited back to his throne by Parliament. Despite the disastrous reign of Charles I, which resulted in Civil War, Charles II showed very quickly that he had been influenced heavily by Catholicism while in exile, and seemed determined to be at odds with Parliament. This paper argues that the constant badgering for money, and more importantly, the unpopular religious tendencies of both Charles and his brother (eventually James II) wore heavily on the patience of their subjects, effectively ensuring the decline of monarchical authority and the rise of Parliament

Thirty-Day Readmission Rates for Total Joint Arthroplasty in Florida Hospitals: Are Most Due to Surgical Complications or Comorbid Conditions?

    Get PDF
Hospital readmission reduction is the focus of many policy makers and healthcare providers to reduce the health care costs and improve quality. CMS initiated the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP) in October 2012. Financial penalties have been exercised for excessive readmission rates after heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, and pneumonia hospitalizations. The HRRP was expanded in federal fiscal year 2015 to include total joint arthroplasty. Total joint arthroplasty is the first procedure targeted for the readmission reduction program. The reasons for readmission after an elective surgical procedure may be different than the reasons for readmission after a medical condition such as heart failure. Using archival data from the 2012 Florida State Inpatient Database, the reasons for readmission within 30 days of discharge after a total joint arthroplasty were evaluated. Discharge data revealed 50, 769 primary total joint arthroplasties with a readmission rate of 5.1 %. The Medicare readmission rate was 5.8%. The most significant predictors of readmission were presence of chronic conditions and receipt of Medicaid benefits. Postoperative complications during the index admission did not significantly contribute to readmissions
