An 'aggregate economic' value (H), which is a combination of genetic control and relative economic value of traits, for all traits in the breeding objective was developed to aid in multitrait selection of strawberry cultivars in the subtropical southeast Queensland program. A profitability index for 12 traits was calculated from the effect of unit changes in each trait on changes in production costs and profitability. The index was applied to the breeding values of 3008 genotypes to produce estimates of H. H was validated by its high correlation (R=0.77) with year of selection (1945-1998) for commercial cultivars. H values for 3008 genotypes ranged from -0.36 to +0.28, when the zero value was set to the value of the cultivar 'Festival', which is the main cultivar grown in southeast Queensland. Modelling indicated that the gross margins were highly linearly related (R0.98) to H values where the genotype occupied less than 50% of total area planted in the industry, but this relationship became quadratic when the genotype occupied higher percentages of the total area planted to strawberries, and variation in gross margin increased as H values increased. H is efficient in identifying economically superior genotypes, but, when deploying new genotypes with high H, impacts on farm gross margin due to high adoption rates should also be considered
The influence of genetic structure on phenotypic diversity in the Australian mango (Mangifera indica) gene pool
Genomic selection is a promising breeding technique for tree crops to accelerate the development of new cultivars. However, factors such as genetic structure can create spurious associations between genotype and phenotype due to the shared history between populations with different trait values. Genetic structure can therefore reduce the accuracy of the genotype to phenotype map, a fundamental requirement of genomic selection models. Here, we employed 272 single nucleotide polymorphisms from 208 Mangifera indica accessions to explore whether the genetic structure of the Australian mango gene pool explained variation in trunk circumference, fruit blush colour and intensity. Multiple population genetic analyses indicate the presence of four genetic clusters and show that the most genetically differentiated cluster contains accessions imported from Southeast Asia (mainly those from Thailand). We find that genetic structure was strongly associated with three traits: trunk circumference, fruit blush colour and intensity in M. indica. This suggests that the history of these accessions could drive spurious associations between loci and key mango phenotypes in the Australian mango gene pool. Incorporating such genetic structure in associations between genotype and phenotype can improve the accuracy of genomic selection, which can assist the future development of new cultivars. © 2022, The Author(s)
Hall-Effect Sign Anomaly and Small-Polaronic Conduction in (La_{1-x}Gd_x)_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3
The Hall coefficient of Gd-doped La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3 exhibits Arrhenius
behavior over a temperature range from 2T_c to 4T_c, with an activation energy
very close to 2/3 that of the electrical conductivity. Although both the doping
level and thermoelectric coefficient indicate hole-like conduction, the Hall
coefficient is electron-like. This unusual result provides strong evidence in
favor of small-polaronic conduction in the paramagnetic regime of the

Noise Probe of the Dynamic Phase Separation in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3
Giant Random Telegraph Noise (RTN) in the resistance fluctuation of a
macroscopic film of perovskite-type manganese oxide La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 has been
observed at various temperatures ranging from 4K to 170K, well below the Curie
temperature (TC = 210K). The amplitudes of the two-level-fluctuations (TLF)
vary from 0.01% to 0.2%. We use a statistical analysis of the life-times of the
TLF to gain insight into the microscopic electronic and magnetic state of this
manganite. At low temperature (below 30K) The TLF is well described by a
thermally activated two-level model. An estimate of the energy difference
between the two states is inferred. At higher temperature (between 60K and
170K) we observed critical effects of the temperature on the life-times of the
TLF. We discuss this peculiar temperature dependence in terms of a sharp change
in the free energy functional of the fluctuators. We attribute the origin of
the RTN to be a dynamic mixed-phase percolative conduction process, where
manganese clusters switch back and forth between two phases that differ in

Utilization of Multiyear Plant Breeding Data to Better Predict Genotype Performance
Despite the availability of multiyear, multicycle, and multiphase data in plant breeding programs for annual crops, selection is often based on single-year, single-cycle, and single-phase data. As genotypes in the same fields are usually grown under the same management practice, data from these fields can and should be analyzed together. In Monsanto’s North American maize (Zea mays L.) breeding program, this approach enables a spatial model to be fitted in each field, providing an estimate of spatial trend and a better estimate of residual variance in each field. Multiyear, multicycle analysis showed that the estimates of genotype × year variance (VGY) and genotype × year × location variance (VGYL) were still the largest components of the estimated phenotypic variance. Analysis of any single-year subset of the data inflated the estimate of genotypic variance (VG) by the size of the estimate of VGY, resulting in potential bias in the estimates of genotype performance. These results demonstrate the advantage of a combined analysis of data across years and cycles to make selection decisions for genotype advancement
Low frequency 1/f noise in doped manganite grain-boundary junctions
We have performed a systematic analysis of the low frequency 1/f-noise in
single grain boundary junctions in the colossal magnetoresistance material
La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3-delta}. The grain boundary junctions were formed in
epitaxial La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3-delta} films deposited on SrTiO_3 bicrystal
substrates and show a large tunneling magnetoresistance of up to 300% at 4.2 K
as well as ideal, rectangular shaped resistance versus applied magnetic field
curves. Below the Curie temperature T_C the measured 1/f noise is dominated by
the grain boundary. The dependence of the noise on bias current, temperature
and applied magnetic field gives clear evidence that the large amount of low
frequency noise is caused by localized sites with fluctuating magnetic moments
in a heavily disordered grain boundary region. At 4.2 K additional temporally
unstable Lorentzian components show up in the noise spectra that are most
likely caused by fluctuating clusters of interacting magnetic moments. Noise
due to fluctuating domains in the junction electrodes is found to play no

Phenotyping progenies for complex architectural traits: a strategy for 1-year-old apple trees (Malus x domestica Borkh.)
International audienceThe aim of this study was to define a methodology for describing architectural traits in a quantitative way on tree descendants. Our strategy was to collect traits related to both tree structural organization, resulting from growth and branching, and tree form and then to select among these traits relevant descriptors on the basis of their genetic parameters. Because the complexity of tree architecture increases with tree age, we chose to describe the trees in the early stages of development. The study was carried out on a 1-year-old apple progeny derived from two parent cultivars with contrasted architecture. A large number of variables were collected at different positions and scales within the trees. Broad-sense heritability and genetic correlations were estimated and the within tree variability was analyzed for variables measured on long sylleptic axillary shoots (LSAS). These results were combined to select heritable and not correlated variables. Finally, the selection of variables proposed combines topological with geometric traits measured on both trunks and LSAS: (1) on the trunk, mean internode length, and number of sylleptic axillary shoots; (2) on axillary shoots, conicity, bending, and number of sylleptic axillary shoots born at order 3. The trees of the progeny were partitioned on the basis of these variables. The putative agronomic interest of the selected variables with respect to the subsequent tree development is discussed
