    An Iron-Based Ecosystem Model of the Central Equatorial Pacific

    The central and eastern equatorial Pacific region is characterized by lower than expected phytoplankton biomass and primary production given the relatively high ambient nitrate concentrations. These unusual conditions have spawned several field programs and laboratory experiments to determine why this high nitrate-low chlorophyll pattern persists in this region. To synthesize the results from these field programs, as well as providing additional evidence in support of the iron hypothesis, we developed a one-dimensional, nine-component ecosystem model of 0 degrees N 140 degrees W. The model components include two phytoplankton size fractions, two zooplankton size fractions, two detrital size fractions, dissolved iron, nitrate, and ammonium. The model was run for 5 years (1990-1994) and was forced using an atmospheric radiative transfer model, an ocean general circulation model (GCM), and in situ data. To our knowledge, this is the first ecosystem model at 0 degrees N 140 degrees W to synthesize the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study Equatorial Pacific Process Study (JGOFS EqPac) data set, as well as to use both in situ and modeled physical data to drive the model. Modeled phytoplankton, zooplankton, and iron all varied on interannual timescales due to El Nino events. Total phytoplankton biomass increased by as much as 40% from early 1992 (El Nino warm) to 1993 (normal). The results also indicate that the biomass increase during a cool period is not constant for each phytoplankton component, but instead the increase is most evident in the netphytoplankton (\u3e10 mu m). Netphytoplankton increase from a low of 0.1% of the total chlorophyll in 1992 to a high of 30% of the total in 1993. Microzooplankton grazing rates fluctuated in response to changes in nanophytoplankton growth rates, whereas mesozooplankton grazing was unrelated to netphytoplankton growth rates. The magnitude and temporal variability of phytoplankton chlorophyll agreed well with in situ data collected during 1992. Modeled primary production was lower than measured during El Nino but agreed with observations during normal conditions. The low primary productivity was probably a result of downwelling produced by the physical model. New production was calculated from total and recycled iron rather than nitrate-based production and was more variable in general and almost 3 times the nitrate-based new production during non-El Nino conditions

    Senses of Sen: Reflections on Amartya Sen’s Ideas of Justice

    This review essay explores how Amartya Sen’s recent book, The Idea of Justice, is relevant and important for the development and assessment of transnational theories and applications to transnational justice and legal education programs. The essay captures a trans-jural dialogue of multinational scholars and teachers, discussing Sen’s contributions to moral justice theory (criticizing programs for “transcendental institutionalism” (like Rawlsian theory) and instead focusing on “comparative broadening” including empirical, relative, and comparative assessments of programs to ameliorate injustice in the world in its comparative concreteness (as in Indian social justice theory and Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments and related work). The authors are professors in the transnational legal education program, the Center for Transnational Legal Studies, sponsored by over 25 different law schools, located in London. They teach courses in a wide variety of subjects, including comparative legal theory, constitutional law, business and legal ethics, moral and legal philosophy, international and comparative law, capital markets and business law, emergency powers, international dispute resolution and a variety of other common and civil law subjects

    CONQUER Scleroderma: Association of Gastrointestinal Tract Symptoms in Early Disease With Resource Utilization

    OBJECTIVES: SSc is associated with increased health-care resource utilization and economic burden. The Collaborative National Quality and Efficacy Registry (CONQUER) is a US-based collaborative that collects longitudinal follow-up data on SSc patients withparticipants. METHODS: CONQUER participants who had completed a baseline and 12-month Gastrointestinal Tract Questionnaire (GIT 2.0) and a Resource Utilization Questionnaire (RUQ) were included in this analysis. Patients were categorized by total GIT 2.0 severity: none-to-mild (0-0.49); moderate (0.50-1.00), and severe-to-very severe (1.01-3.00). Clinical features and medication exposures were examined in each of these categories. The 12-month RUQ responses were summarized by GIT 2.0 score categories at 12 months. RESULTS: Among the 211 CONQUER participants who met the inclusion criteria, most (64%) had mild GIT symptoms, 26% had moderate symptoms, and 10% severe GIT symptoms at 12 months. The categorization of GIT total severity score by RUQ showed that more upper endoscopy procedures and inpatient hospitalization occurred in the CONQUER participants with severe GIT symptoms. These patients with severe GIT symptoms also reported the use of more adaptive equipment. CONCLUSION: This report from the CONQUER cohort suggests that severe GIT symptoms result in more resource utilization. It is especially important to understand resource utilization in early disease cohorts when disease activity, rather than damage, primarily contributes to health-related costs of SSc
