Background: Measles virus (MV) is a highly contagious agent which causes a major health problem in developing countries. We studied the effect of buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) on the replication of an AIK-HDC strain of MV and its induced apoptosis in Vero cell lines. Methods: In this study, toxicity of BSO on Vero cells was investigated first, resulted in determination of sub-lethal or non-toxic concentration zone of BSO for cells. Next, anti-viral effect of BSO at various time limits was evaluated and virus titer was determined at each stage either as 50 tissue culture infective dose (TCID) 50 or by plaque assay method. Using specific anti-measles IgG, anti-viral effect of BSO on MV replication cycle was evaluated through indirect immunofluorescence assay, meanwhile presence of viral RNA was investigated by RT-PCR and gel electrophoresis. Results: According to the experiments, BSO, at concentration of 50 μM, markedly inhibited the cytopathic effect (CPE) induced by MV. BSO also significantly inhibited apoptosis induced by MV. BSO either influences replication of MV genome, or may inhibit virion formation. Conclusion: These results suggest that the inhibition of CPE and apoptosis by BSO induced by MV may be associated with the effect of BSO on viral RNA genome. Therefore, it is suggested that MV infections can induce apoptosis through the activation of a common pathway that can be inhibited by BSO

Using tibial sensors in total knee replacements (TKRs) can enhance patient outcomes and reduce early revision surgeries, benefitting hospitals, the National Health Services (NHS), stakeholders, biomedical companies, surgeons, and patients. Having a sensor that is accurate, precise (over the whole surface), and includes a wide range of loads is important to the success of joint force tracking. This research aims to investigate the accuracy of a novel intraoperative load sensor for use in TKRs. This research used a self-developed load sensor and artificial intelligence (AI). The sensor is compatible with Zimmer's Persona Knee System and adaptable to other knee systems. Accuracy and precision were assessed, comparing medial/lateral compartments inside/outside the sensing area and below/within the training load range. Five points were tested on both sides (medial and lateral), inside and outside of the sensing region, and with a range of loads. The average accuracy of the sensor was 83.41% and 84.63% for the load and location predictions, respectively. The highest accuracy, 99.20%, was recorded from inside the sensing area within the training load values, suggesting that expanding the training load range could enhance overall accuracy. The main outcomes were that (1) the load and location predictions were similar in accuracy and precision (p > 0.05) in both compartments, (2) the accuracy and precision of both predictions inside versus outside of the triangular sensing area were comparable (p > 0.05), and (3) there was a significant difference in the accuracy of load and location predictions (p < 0.05) when the load applied was below the training loading range. The intraoperative load sensor demonstrated good accuracy and precision over the whole surface and over a wide range of load values. Minor improvements to the software could greatly improve the results of the sensor. Having a reliable and robust sensor could greatly improve advancements in all joint surgeries

Investigation on viscosity and non-isothermal crystallization behavior of P-bearing steelmaking slags with varying TiO2 content

The viscous flow and crystallization behavior of CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3-FetO-P2O5-TiO2 steelmaking slags have been investigated over a wide range of temperatures under Ar (High purity, >99.999 pct) atmosphere, and the relationship between viscosity and structure was determined. The results indicated that the viscosity of the slags slightly decreased with increasing TiO2 content. The constructed nonisothermal continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams revealed that the addition of TiO2 lowered the crystallization temperature. This can mainly be ascribed to that addition of TiO2 promotes the formation of [TiO6]-octahedra units and, consequently, the formation of MgFe2O4-Mg2TiO4 solid solution. Moreover, the decreasing viscosity has a significant effect on enhancing the diffusion of ion units, such as Ca2+ and [TiO4]-tetrahedra, from bulk melts to the crystal–melt interface. The crystallization of CaTiO3 and CaSiTiO5 was consequently accelerated, which can improve the phosphorus content in P-enriched phase (n2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O5). Finally, the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics was characterized and the activation energy for the primary crystal growth was derived such that the activation energy increases from −265.93 to −185.41 KJ·mol−1 with the addition of TiO2 content, suggesting that TiO2 lowered the tendency for the slags to crystallize

Intelligent Joystick Sensing the User's Emotion and Providing Biofeedback

Development of an intelligent joystick is proposed which senses the user’s bio-signals and recognises the user’s emotion. It provides biofeedback to the user as well as the user’s emotional state information to the computer allowing human-computer interaction over sensitive environment. While the user is interacting with a computer via a joystick the bio-signals can be collected through the user’s fingers touching it. The collected bio-signals information is mapped on a two-dimensional space to find out the quality and intensity of emotion continuously and in a real-time manner. The intelligent joystick has application within several fields such as healthcare, sport and game industries. In such cases, the user can be influenced, or suffer from medical problems while under stress during interaction with the machines. The intelligent joystick will provide feedback to the user and alert alarm about unhealthy conditions through the embedded actuators and allow the machine to adapt with the users’ emotional state
