Critical Behavior of an Ising System on the Sierpinski Carpet: A Short-Time Dynamics Study
The short-time dynamic evolution of an Ising model embedded in an infinitely
ramified fractal structure with noninteger Hausdorff dimension was studied
using Monte Carlo simulations. Completely ordered and disordered spin
configurations were used as initial states for the dynamic simulations. In both
cases, the evolution of the physical observables follows a power-law behavior.
Based on this fact, the complete set of critical exponents characteristic of a
second-order phase transition was evaluated. Also, the dynamic exponent of the critical initial increase in magnetization, as well as the critical
temperature, were computed. The exponent exhibits a weak dependence
on the initial (small) magnetization. On the other hand, the dynamic exponent
shows a systematic decrease when the segmentation step is increased, i.e.,
when the system size becomes larger. Our results suggest that the effective
noninteger dimension for the second-order phase transition is noticeably
smaller than the Hausdorff dimension. Even when the behavior of the
magnetization (in the case of the ordered initial state) and the
autocorrelation (in the case of the disordered initial state) with time are
very well fitted by power laws, the precision of our simulations allows us to
detect the presence of a soft oscillation of the same type in both magnitudes
that we attribute to the topological details of the generating cell at any
scale.Comment: 10 figures, 4 tables and 14 page
K-Chameleon and the Coincidence Problem
In this paper we present a hybrid model of k-essence and chameleon, named as
k-chameleon. In this model, due to the chameleon mechanism, the directly strong
coupling between the k-chameleon field and matters (cold dark matters and
baryons) is allowed. In the radiation dominated epoch, the interaction between
the k-chameleon field and background matters can be neglected, the behavior of
the k-chameleon therefore is the same as that of the ordinary k-essence. After
the onset of matter domination, the strong coupling between the k-chameleon and
matters dramatically changes the result of the ordinary k-essence. We find that
during the matter-dominated epoch, only two kinds of attractors may exist: one
is the familiar {\bf K} attractor and the other is a completely {\em new},
dubbed {\bf C} attractor. Once the universe is attracted into the {\bf C}
attractor, the fraction energy densities of the k-chameleon and
dust matter are fixed and comparable, and the universe will undergo
a power-law accelerated expansion. One can adjust the model so that the {\bf K}
attractor do not appear. Thus, the k-chameleon model provides a natural
solution to the cosmological coincidence problem.Comment: Revtex, 17 pages; v2: 18 pages, two figures, more comments and

Bioactive ceramic-reinforced composites for bone augmentation
Biomaterials have been used to repair the human body for millennia, but it is only since the 1970s that man-made composites have been used. Hydroxyapatite (HA)-reinforced polyethylene (PE) is the first of the ‘second-generation’ biomaterials that have been developed to be bioactive rather than bioinert. The mechanical properties have been characterized using quasi-static, fatigue, creep and fracture toughness testing, and these studies have allowed optimization of the production method. The in vitro and in vivo biological properties have been investigated with a range of filler content and have shown that the presence of sufficient bioactive filler leads to a bioactive composite. Finally, the material has been applied clinically, initially in the orbital floor and later in the middle ear. From this initial combination of HA in PE other bioactive ceramic polymer composites have been developed
Beyond Counting: New Perspectives on the Active IPv4 Address Space
In this study, we report on techniques and analyses that enable us to capture
Internet-wide activity at individual IP address-level granularity by relying on
server logs of a large commercial content delivery network (CDN) that serves
close to 3 trillion HTTP requests on a daily basis. Across the whole of 2015,
these logs recorded client activity involving 1.2 billion unique IPv4
addresses, the highest ever measured, in agreement with recent estimates.
Monthly client IPv4 address counts showed constant growth for years prior, but
since 2014, the IPv4 count has stagnated while IPv6 counts have grown. Thus, it
seems we have entered an era marked by increased complexity, one in which the
sole enumeration of active IPv4 addresses is of little use to characterize
recent growth of the Internet as a whole.
With this observation in mind, we consider new points of view in the study of
global IPv4 address activity. Our analysis shows significant churn in active
IPv4 addresses: the set of active IPv4 addresses varies by as much as 25% over
the course of a year. Second, by looking across the active addresses in a
prefix, we are able to identify and attribute activity patterns to network
restructurings, user behaviors, and, in particular, various address assignment
practices. Third, by combining spatio-temporal measures of address utilization
with measures of traffic volume, and sampling-based estimates of relative host
counts, we present novel perspectives on worldwide IPv4 address activity,
including empirical observation of under-utilization in some areas, and
complete utilization, or exhaustion, in others.Comment: in Proceedings of ACM IMC 201
Effects of force load, muscle fatigue and extremely low frequency magnetic stimulation on EEG signals during side arm lateral raise task
Objective: This study was to quantitatively investigate the effects of force load, muscle fatigue and extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic stimulation on electroencephalography (EEG) signal features during side arm lateral raise task.
Approach: EEG signals were recorded by a BIOSEMI Active Two system with Pin-Type active-electrodes from 18 healthy subjects when they performed the right arm side lateral raise task (90° away from the body) with three different loads (0 kg, 1 kg and 3 kg; their order was randomized among the subjects) on the forearm. The arm maintained the loads until the subject felt exhausted. The first 10 s recording for each load was regarded as non-fatigue status and the last 10 s before the subject was exhausted as fatigue status. The subject was then given a 5 min resting between different loads. Two days later, the same experiment was performed on each subject except that ELF magnetic stimulation was applied to the subject's deltoid muscle during the 5 min resting period. EEG features from C3 and C4 electrodes including the power of alpha, beta and gamma and sample entropy were analyzed and compared between different loads, non-fatigue/fatigue status, and with/without ELF magnetic stimulation.
Main results: The key results were associated with the change of the power of alpha band. From both C3-EEG and C4-EEG, with 1 kg and 3 kg force loads, the power of alpha band was significantly smaller than that from 0 kg for both non-fatigue and fatigue periods (all p 0.05 for all the force loads except C4-EEG with ELF simulation). The power of alpha band at fatigue status was significantly increased for both C3-EEG and C4-EEG when compared with the non-fatigue status (p 0.05, except between non-fatigue and fatigue with magnetic stimulation in gamma band of C3-EEG at 1 kg, and in the SampEn at 1 kg and 3 kg force loads from C4-EEG).
Significance: Our study comprehensively quantified the effects of force, fatigue and the ELF magnetic stimulation on EEG features with difference forces, fatigue status and ELF magnetic stimulation
