Percolation in random environment
We consider bond percolation on the square lattice with perfectly correlated
random probabilities. According to scaling considerations, mapping to a random
walk problem and the results of Monte Carlo simulations the critical behavior
of the system with varying degree of disorder is governed by new, random fixed
points with anisotropic scaling properties. For weaker disorder both the
magnetization and the anisotropy exponents are non-universal, whereas for
strong enough disorder the system scales into an {\it infinite randomness fixed
point} in which the critical exponents are exactly known.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

The Effect of pH on Nickel Alloy SCC and Corrosion Performance
Alloy X-750 condition HTH stress corrosion crack growth rate (SCCGR) tests have been conducted at 360 C (680 F) with 50 cc/kg hydrogen as a function of coolant pH. Results indicate no appreciable influence of pH on crack growth in the pH (at 360 C) range of {approx} 6.2 to 8.7, consistent with previous alloy 600 findings. These intermediate pH results suggest that pH is not a key variable which must be accounted for when modeling pressurized water reactor (PWR) primary water SCC. In this study, however, a nearly three fold reduction in X-750 crack growth rate was observed in reduced pH environments (pH 3.8 through HCl addition and pH 4-5.3 through H{sub 2}SO{sub 4} addition). Crack growth rates did not directly correlate with corrosion film thickness. In fact, 10x thicker corrosion films were observed in the reduced pH environments
A microscopic approach to critical phenomena at interfaces: an application to complete wetting in the Ising model
We study how the formalism of the Hierarchical Reference Theory (HRT) can be
extended to inhomogeneous systems. HRT is a liquid state theory which
implements the basic ideas of Wilson momentum shell renormalization group (RG)
to microscopic Hamiltonians. In the case of homogeneous systems, HRT provides
accurate results even in the critical region, where it reproduces scaling and
non-classical critical exponents. We applied the HRT to study wetting critical
phenomena in a planar geometry. Our formalism avoids the explicit definition of
effective surface Hamiltonians but leads, close to the wetting transition, to
the same renormalization group equation already studied by RG techiques.
However, HRT also provides information on the non universal quantities because
it does not require any preliminary coarse graining procedure. A simple
approximation to the infinite HRT set of equations is discussed. The HRT
evolution equation for the surface free energy is numerically integrated in a
semi-infinite three-dimensional Ising model and the complete wetting phase
transition is analyzed. A renormalization of the adsorption critical amplitude
and of the wetting parameter is observed. Our results are compared to available

Direct identification and susceptibility testing of enteric bacilli from positive blood cultures using VITEK (GNI+/GNS-GA)
AbstractObjective To study the possibility of reporting results of identification and susceptibility testing of Gram-negative bacilli the same day as bacteremia is detected by using direct inoculation from positive blood cultures (Bactec 9240) into VITEK GNI+ and GNS-GA cards.Methods All blood cultures with Gram-negative enteric bacillus-like morphology on microscopy found to be positive on workdays between 15 June 1999 and 29 February 2000 were included. Identification and susceptibility testing were done by three methods: the direct method using a suspension made by differential centrifugation of positive blood culture broth for inoculation of the VITEK cards; the standard method using an inoculum made from an overnight culture on a solid media; and the routine method (reference method) using conventional testing.Results Of 169 isolates, the direct method resulted in 75% correct identifications, 9% misidentifications and 17% non-identifications. All misidentified isolateswere Escherichia coli, of which 80% were reported as Salmonella arizonae. Five biochemical tests yielded most of the aberrant results; correcting the citrate and malonate reactions in most cases led to correct identification by the VITEK database. Despite a negative H2S reaction, 11 E. coli isolates were reported as S. arizonae. Two-thirds (69%) of identifications were reported within 6 h, and 95% of these were correct. The direct susceptibility testing method was assessable for 140 isolates. Correct results were found in 99% of isolate-antimicrobial combinations, and 85% were reported within 6 h.Conclusion The direct VITEK method could correctly report identifications and susceptibility patterns within 6 h, making same-day reporting possible for almost two-thirds (63%) of bacteremic episodes with Gram-negative bacilli. These results could probably be improved by modification of the identification algorithms of the VITEK software
Epidemiology and integrated control of Potato Late Blight in Europe
Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of late blight, is a major threat to potato production in northwestern Europe. Before 1980, the worldwide population of P. infestans outside Mexico appeared to be asexual and to consist of a single clonal lineage of A1 mating type characterized by a single genotype. It is widely believed that new strains migrated into Europe in 1976 and that this led to subsequent population changes including the introduction of the A2 mating type. The population characteristics of recently collected isolates in NW Europe show a diverse population including both mating types, sexual reproduction and oospores, although differences are observed between regions. Although it is difficult to find direct evidence that new strains are more aggressive, there are several indications from experiments and field epidemics that the aggressiveness of P. infestans has increased in the past 20 years. The relative importance of the different primary inoculum sources and specific measures for reducing their role, such as covering dumps with plastic and preventing seed tubers from becoming infected, is described for the different regions. In NW Europe, varieties with greater resistance tend not to be grown on a large scale. From the grower’s perspective, the savings in fungicide input that can be achieved with these varieties are not compensated by the higher (perceived) risk of blight. Fungicides play a crucial role in the integrated control of late blight. The spray strategies in NW Europe and a table of the specific attributes of the most important fungicides in Europe are presented. The development and use of decision support systems (DSSs) in NW Europe are described. In The Netherlands, it is estimated that almost 40% of potato growers use recommendations based on commercially available DSS. In the Nordic countries, a new DSS concept with a fixed 7-day spray interval and a variable dose rate is being tested. In the UK, commercially available DSSs are used for c. 8% of the area. The validity of Smith Periods for the new population of P. infestans in the UK is currently being evaluated
Dynamic scaling and aging phenomena in short-range Ising spin glass: CuCoCl-FeCl graphite bi-intercalation compound

(GBIC) has been studied with SQUID DC and AC magnetic susceptibility. The
dependence of the zero-field relaxation time above a spin-freezing
temperature (= 3.92 0.11 K) is well described by critical slowing
down. The absorption below decreases with
increasing angular frequency , which is in contrast to the case of 3D
Ising spin glass. The dynamic freezing temperature at which
dd, is determined as a function of
frequency (0.01 Hz 1 kHz) and magnetic field (0 5 kOe). The dynamic scaling analysis of the relaxation time
defined as at suggests the absence of
SG phase in the presence of (at least above 100 Oe). Dynamic scaling
analysis of and near
leads to the critical exponents ( = 0.36 0.03, = 3.5
0.4, = 1.4 0.2, = 6.6 1.2, = 0.24
0.02, and = 0.13 0.02). The aging phenomenon is studied through
the absorption below . It obeys a
power-law decay with an exponent . The rejuvenation effect is also observed under

Associations of changes in physical activity and sedentary time with weight recurrence after bariatric surgery: a 5-year prospective study
Background Increasing physical activity and limiting sedentary time may minimize weight recurrence after bariatric surgery. However, few studies have evaluated potential associations of objectively-measured physical activity and sedentary time with post-surgical weight recurrence over time. Aims To evaluate associations of change in physical activity and sedentary time with weight recurrence after bariatric surgery. Methods Participants from the Oslo Bariatric Surgery Study, a prospective cohort study, wore an ActiGraph monitor for seven days at 1- and 5 years after surgery to assess daily physical activity and sedentary time. Participants’ weight was measured at in-person clinic visits. Chi-square Test and Paired-samples T-test evaluated group differences and change over time, while Pearson’s Correlation, multiple logistic and linear regression investigated associations between variables. Results Five years after surgery 79 participants (70.5% response rate, 81% female) (mean (sd) age: 54.0 (±9.3), BMI: 32.1 (±4.7)) had valid monitor data. Participants increased their sedentary time (71.4 minutes/day (95% CI: 54.2–88.6, p = <0.001)) and reduced daily steps (−1411.1 (95% CI: 737.8–208.4), p = <0.001), light physical activity (−54.1 min/day (95% CI: 40.9–67.2, p = <0.001)), and total physical activity (−48.2 (95% CI: 34.6–63.3), p = <0.001) from 1- to 5 years after surgery. No change was found for moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity. No associations were found between changes in steps, physical activity or sedentary time and weight recurrence. Conclusion Participants increased sedentary time and decreased light- and total physical activity between 1- and 5 years post-surgery. Overall, changes in physical activity and sedentary time were not associated with weight recurrence. Interventions to help patients increase physical activity and limit sedentary time after bariatric surgery are needed.publishedVersio
A classical Over Barrier Model to compute charge exchange between ions and one-optical-electron atoms
In this paper we study theoretically the process of electron capture between
one-optical-electron atoms (e.g. hydrogenlike or alkali atoms) and ions at
low-to-medium impact velocities (v/v_e <= 1) working on a modification of an
already developed classical Over Barrier Model (OBM) [V. Ostrovsky, J. Phys. B:
At. Mol. Opt. Phys. {\bf 28} 3901 (1995)], which allows to give a
semianalytical formula for the cross sections. The model is discussed and then
applied to a number of test cases including experimental data as well as data
coming from other sophisticated numerical simulations. It is found that the
accuracy of the model, with the suggested corrections and applied to quite

Sensitive Observations of Radio Recombination Lines in Orion and W51: The Data and Detection of Systematic Recombination Line Blueshifts Proportional to Impact Broadening
Sensitive spectral observations made in two frequency bands near 6.0 and 17.6
GHz are described for Orion and W51. Using frequency switching we were able to
achieve a dynamic range in excess of 10,000 without fitting sinusoidal or
polynomial baselines. This enabled us to detect lines as weak as T\Delta n$ as
high as 25 have been detected in Orion. In the Orion data, where the lines are
stronger, we have also detected a systematic shift in the line center
frequencies proportional to linewidth that cannot be explained by normal

Density of states and magnetoconductance of disordered Au point contacts
We report the first low temperature magnetotransport measurements on
electrochemically fabricated atomic scale gold nanojunctions. As , the
junctions exhibit nonperturbatively large zero bias anomalies (ZBAs) in their
differential conductance. We consider several explanations and find that the
ZBAs are consistent with a reduced local density of states (LDOS) in the
disordered metal. We suggest that this is a result of Coulomb interactions in a
granular metal with moderate intergrain coupling. Magnetoconductance of atomic
scale junctions also differs significantly from that of less geometrically
