Universal temperature dependence of optical excitation life-time and band-gap in chirality assigned semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes
The temperature dependence of optical excitation life-time, Gamma, and
transition energies, E_ii, were measured for bucky-papers of single-wall carbon
nanotubes (SWCNTs) and inner tubes in double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs)
using resonant Raman scattering. The temperature dependence of Gamma and E_ii
is the same for both types of samples and is independent of tube chirality. The
data proves that electron-phonon interaction is responsible for temperature
dependence of E_ii(T). The temperature independent inhomogeneous contribution
to Gamma is much larger in the SWCNT samples, which is explained by the
different SWCNT environment in the two types of samples. Gamma of the inner
tubes for the bucky-paper DWCNT sample is as low as \sim 30 meV, which is
comparable to that found for individual SWCNTs

VRpursuits: Interaction in Virtual Reality Using Smooth Pursuit Eye Movements
Gaze-based interaction using smooth pursuit eye movements (Pursuits) is attractive given that it is intuitive and overcomes the Midas touch problem. At the same time, eye tracking is becoming increasingly popular for VR applications. While Pursuits was shown to be effective in several interaction contexts, it was never explored in-depth for VR before. In a user study (N=26), we investigated how parameters that are specific to VR settings influence the performance of Pursuits. For example, we found that Pursuits is robust against different sizes of virtual 3D targets. However performance improves when the trajectory size (e.g., radius) is larger, particularly if the user is walking while interacting. While walking, selecting moving targets via Pursuits is generally feasible albeit less accurate than when stationary. Finally, we discuss the implications of these findings and the potential of smooth pursuits for interaction in VR by demonstrating two sample use cases: 1) gaze-based authentication in VR, and 2) a space meteors shooting game
The radiation field in the Gamma Irradiation Facility GIF++ at CERN
The high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrade is setting now a new challenge for
particle detector technologies. The increase in luminosity will produce a
particle background in the gas-based muon detectors that is ten times higher
than under conditions at the LHC. The detailed knowledge of the detector
performance in the presence of such a high background is crucial for an
optimized design and efficient operation after the HL-LHC upgrade. A precise
understanding of possible aging effects of detector materials and gases is of
extreme importance. To cope with these challenging requirements, a new Gamma
Irradiation Facility (GIF++) was designed and built at the CERN SPS North Area
as successor of the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) during the Long Shutdown 1
(LS1) period. It features an intense source of 662 keV photons with adjustable
intensity, to simulate continuous background over large areas, and, combined
with a high energy muon beam, to measure detector performance in the presence
of the background. The new GIF++ facility has been operational since spring
2015. In addition to describing the facility and its infrastructure, the goal
of this work is to provide an extensive characterization of the GIF++ photon
field with different configurations of the absorption filters in both the
upstream and downstream irradiation areas. Moreover, the measured results are
benchmarked with Geant4 simulations to enhance the knowledge of the radiation
field. The absorbed dose in air in the facility may reach up to 2.2 Gy/h
directly in front of the irradiator. Of special interest is the low-energy
photon component that develops due to the multiple scattering of photons within
the irradiator and from the concrete walls of the bunker

Experimental Study of Condensation of Water on Polydimethylsiloxane-Coated Copper Surfaces
Modification of surfaces to enable dropwise condensation is a promising
approach for achieving high condensation rates. In this work, we present an
experimental study on condensation of water on copper surfaces coated with an
ultrathin, 5 nm - 10 nm thick polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer. This
hydrophobic coating possesses a very low thermal resistance, which in
combination with copper substrate enables achieving high condensation rates in
heat transfer applications. The PDMS-coated copper substrates have been
fabricated with a newly developed method, which involves turning, sanding,
polishing, oxidation, and polymer coating steps. The measured static contact
angle was 110{\deg}, and a the contact angle hysteresis was 2{\deg}. The
achieved very low hysteresis is advantageous for promoting dropwise
condensation. The surface showed no ageing effects during 100 repetitions of
advancing and receding contact angle (ARCA) measurements. Condensation heat
transfer on uncoated and PDMS-coated copper surfaces surfaces has been studied
experimentally in a saturated water vapor atmosphere at 60{\deg}C. An
enhancement factor for heat flux and heat transfer coefficient of up to 1.6 was
found on PDMS-coated copper surfaces compared to uncoated surfaces, which
decreased to 1.1 on second and third day of condensation operation. Images of
the condensation surface were recorded while conducting condensation
experiments and post processed to evaluate drop departure diameter and
frequency of drop sweeping events. It has been shown that the behavior of the
heat transfer coefficient correlates with the frequency of the sweeping events
Effects of a Follow-On Formula Containing Isomaltulose (Palatinose) on Metabolic Response, Acceptance, Tolerance and Safety in Infants: A Randomized-Controlled Trial
UNLABELLED:Effects of the dietary glycaemic load on postprandial blood glucose and insulin response might be of importance for fat deposition and risk of obesity. We aimed to investigate the metabolic effects, acceptance and tolerance of a follow-on formula containing the low glycaemic and low insulinaemic carbohydrate isomaltulose replacing high glycaemic maltodextrin. Healthy term infants aged 4 to 8 completed months (n = 50) were randomized to receive the intervention follow-on formula (IF, 2.1g isomaltulose (Palatinose™)/100mL) or an isocaloric conventional formula (CF) providing 2.1g maltodextrin/100mL for four weeks. Plasma insulinaemia 60 min after start of feeding (primary outcome) was not statistically different, while glycaemia adjusted for age and time for drinking/volume of meal 60 min after start of feeding was 122(105,140) mg/dL in IF (median, interquartile range) and 111(100,123) in CF (p = 0.01). Urinary c-peptide:creatinine ratio did not differ (IF:81.5(44.7, 96.0) vs. CF:56.8(37.5, 129),p = 0.43). Urinary c-peptide:creatinine ratio was correlated total intake of energy (R = 0.31,p = 0.045), protein (R = 0.42,p = 0.006) and fat (R = 0.40,p = 0.01) but not with carbohydrate intake (R = 0.22,p = 0.16). Both formulae were well accepted without differences in time of crying, flatulence, stool characteristics and the occurrence of adverse events. The expected lower postprandial plasma insulin and blood glucose level due to replacement of high glycaemic maltodextrin by low glycaemic isomaltulose were not observed in the single time-point blood analysis. In infants aged 4 to 8 completed months fed a liquid formula, peak blood glucose might be reached earlier than 60 min after start of feeding. Non-invasive urinary c-peptide measurements may be a suitable marker of nutritional intake during the previous four days in infants. TRIAL REGISTRATION:ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01627015
