Simply-connected vortex-patch shallow-water quasi-equilibria

This work is supported by a UK Natural Environment Research Council studentshipWe examine the form, properties, stability and evolution of simply-connected vortex-patch relative quasi-equilibria in the single-layer ƒ-plane shallow-water model of geophysical fluid dynamics. We examine the effects of the size, shape and strength of vortices in this system, represented by three distinct parameters completely describing the families of the quasi-equilibria. Namely, these are the ratio Îł=L/LD between the horizontal size of the vortices and the Rossby deformation length; the aspect ratio λ between the minor to major axes of the vortex; and a potential vorticity (PV)-based Rossby number Ro=qâ€Č/ƒ, the ratio of the PV anomaly qâ€Č within the vortex to the Coriolis frequency ƒ. By defining an appropriate steadiness parameter, we find that the quasi-equilibria remain steady for long times, enabling us to determine the boundary of stability λc=λc(Îł, Ro), for 0.25≀γ≀6 and |Ro|≀1. By calling two states which share Îł,|Ro| and λ ‘equivalent’, we find a clear asymmetry in the stability of cyclonic (Ro>0) and anticyclonic (Ro<0) equilibria, with cyclones being able to sustain greater deformations than anticyclones before experiencing an instability. We find that ageostrophic motions stabilise cyclones and destabilise anticyclones. Both types of vortices undergo the same main types of unstable evolution, albeit in different ranges of the parameter space, (a) vacillations for large-Îł, large-Ro states, (b) filamentation for small-Îł states and (c) vortex splitting, asymmetric for intermediate-Îł and symmetric for large-Îł states.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Searching for Fast Optical Transients using VERITAS Cherenkov Telescopes

Astronomical transients are intrinsically interesting things to study. Fast optical transients (microsecond timescale) are a largely unexplored field of optical astronomy mainly due to the fact that large optical telescopes are oversubscribed. Furthermore, most optical observations use instruments with integration times on the order of seconds and are thus unable to resolve fast transients. Current-generation atmospheric Cherenkov gamma-ray telescopes, however, have huge collecting areas (e.g., VERITAS, which consists of four 12-m telescopes), larger than any existing optical telescopes, and time is typically available for such studies without interfering with gamma-ray observations. The following outlines the benefits of using a Cherenkov telescope to detect optical transients and the implementation of the VERITAS Transient Detector (TRenDy), a dedicated multi-channel photometer based on field-programmable gate arrays. Data are presented demonstrating the ability of TRenDy to detect transient events such as a star passing through its field of view and the optical light curve of a pulsar

Comment on "Measurement of quantum states of neutrons in the Earth's gravitational field"

In the paper by V.V. Nesvizhevsky et al., Phys. Rev. D 67, 102002 (2003), it is argued that the lowest quantum state of neutrons in the Earth's gravitational field has been experimentally identified. While this is most likely correct, it is imperative to investigate all alternative explanations of the result in order to close all loopholes, as it is the first experiment ever claimed to have observed gravitational quantum states. Here we show that geometrical effects in the experimental setup can mimic the results attributed to gravity. Modifications of the experimental setup to close these possible loopholes are suggested.Comment: 4 pages, to appear in Phys.Rev.

The issues Israeli women have to deal with when their children –in particular their sons– are to get drafted to the compulsory army service, at the age of 18, are not new. However, when the political ideology of such a mother is not within the “consensus” zone/limits the mother must face the crucial question: am I going to support my son who in the next three years at least is going to serve in an organization I object to, among people I don’t particularly wish that he meets, and under the command of men and women whose judgment might not have passed as minimally fair or even humanistic

A double label: learning disabilities and emotional problems among gifted children

Get PDF
Many gifted children are "double labeled", namely in addition of being gifted they are also learning disabled and/or suffer from emotional, social or behavioral problems. This article will present the difficulties gifted children with a double label have to deal with, especially the difficulties in the educational system. Because of the double label the educational team faces a double challenge, in most cases without being equipped with the required knowledge or the support they need. This article will describe three case studies; techniques for intervention with such children and their families will be suggested
